Rabih Abou-Khalil - Songs For Sad Women

Abou-Khalil's new album "Songs For Sad Women" radiates with charming, elegiac beauty. Consisting of four players -- on oud (Arab lute), on duduk (Armenian shawm), on serpent (a mysterious brass instrument from the Middle Ages) and drums --, the band's rather singular instrumental mixture makes for an extraordinary sound experience. This is Abou-Khalil's most emotional music to date, heart-gripping, relaxed and haunting. The album's guest star is Gevorg Dabaghyan, one of the most famous players of the duduk, Armenia's traditional oboe and national symbol. Born in 1965 in Yerevan, Dabaghyan graduated from State Conservatory in 1989 and was the first to present Armenian mediaeval spiritual music on the duduk. He became famous for his cross-cultural collaborations with such as Jan Garbarek, Gidon Kremer and Yo-Yo Ma and his Silk Road Project. In Dabaghyan's hand, the duduk becomes an autumn breeze, fresh and bright. Like a rainbow in the sky, like an eternal voice coming from the mountains and rivers of Armenia, the sound of the duduk touches the listener's heart and soul.

The WorldNetwork Series Vol. [1-20]

Posted By MiOd On 10:56 PM 0 comments
The WorldNetwork collection is produced in close cooperation between Germany's largest broadcasting company WDR (West German Radio & Television) and NETWORK. Since its inception, the WDR has committed itself to inviting great artists from all over the world to record at its Cologne studios. When this wasn't possible or feasible, recordings were made directly on location. The best sound technicians have spared no effort to record these unique musical moments live: without overdubbing, multi-tracking or other cosmetic effects. Christian Scholze and Jean Trouillet have selected, together with Jan Reichow, the most outstanding concert, festival and studio recordings from decades of archive material to create this unique collection. Over the past years, Network, in collaboration with the WDR, has made local recordings, among others, in Senegal, Australia, Cuba, Brazil and Uzbekistan. Many CDs in this collection have received national and international record awards. The jury of the International Phonographic Award explained their decision: "Recordings from four continents, interpreted in high quality by singers and instrumentalists who, although receptive to new sources of inspiration, are nevertheless deeply rooted in the tradition of their culture and have not adapted to current trends: these recordings in the WorldNetwork collection illustrate the diversity of a predominantly non-commercial world-music of extraordinary quality."

World Network Vol.1: India
Shivkumar Sharma & Zakir Hussain
Raga Puriya Kalyan - Classical Indian Music

Shivkumar Sharma, the great santur virtuoso, weighs every note he plays with infinitesimal care. The santur is known to us in Europe as the cimbalon. As if free of gravity’s fetters, Sharma hovers over the hundred strings of his instrument to create sounds of dazzling beauty, ranging from meditative calm to complex, percussive whirlwind passages. He is accompanied by India’s legendary tabla player, Zakir Hussain. Hussain achieved renown as a classical artist at an early age. In later years he went on to experiment with many other musical genres including famed jam sessions with many jazz and rock stars. Before Shivkumar Sharma, no one considered it possible to perform classical music on the santur. His sensitive and virtuoso playing has all but dispelled this hollow notion. To date, however, no one has emerged to rival Sharma – for the instrument was long known only in folk music.

World Network Vol.2: Georgia
Rustavi Choir & Duduki Trio Omar Kelaptrishvili

The Rustavi Choir from Tiflis, Georgia, is one of the most celebrated choirs of the former Soviet Union. Its members, the best soloists from throughout the republic, have been assembled to preserve the rich diversity of its age-old vocal traditions. Georgia is particularly famous for its tradition of polyphonic songs which have survived in liturgical music and chants dating back to the 10th century. The origins of polyphonic folk songs are even older. This CD presents a wide variety of regional styles; work songs, drinking songs and historical tunes, as well as the wonderful liturgical chants. The Omar Kelaptrishvili trio is rooted in the urban music of Georgia – where oriental and western influences blend with indigenous tradition. The velvety tone of the duduki, an oboe as we know it, is produced by a technique of circular breathing which allows the musician to play continuously without having to pause for air. These slow, stately melodies are typically played in taverns and during banquets or festivities. Today, only a few ensembles versed in the ancient art of the duduki are to be found in Georgia. The trio of Omar Kelaptrishvili is undoubtedly one of the best.

World Network Vol.3 Iran
Mohammad Reza Shadjarian & Ensemble Aref - Dastgah Chahargah - Classical Persian Music

Thousands of bootleg cassettes of the famed Beethovenhalle Concert in Bonn are still in circulation among aficionados. At home, Mohammad Reza Shadjarian, the foremost classical singer of Iran, enjoys the stature of a national icon, even though he continued to perform long after the decision of the orthodox Mullahs to ban public performances. The musical background for Shadjarian’s art is formed by impressive instrumental improvisations, to which Shadjarian sings the lyrics of the 14th century poets Sa’di and Hafez. When Goethe discovered these poems some two hundred years ago he was alleged to have said, "Admit it – the poets of the East are simply superior!" Shadjarian’s voice is almost startling in its intimacy. It touches the listener’s heart with its incredible poignancy and expressiveness. Under the direction of the composer Parviz Meshkatian, the ensemble features eleven of the most accomplished musicians in Iran. The roots of Persian music trace back to antiquity. When Alexander the Great conquered the East, he was fascinated by the variety of instruments and melodies he discovered there. The Iranian high plain and Mesopotamia have long been known as cradles of music where many prototypes of instruments known to us in the West found their origin. The lute, the cimbalon, the oboe, the fiddle and the harp, for example, all came to us from the Orient.

World Network Vol.4 Crete
Psarantonis & Ensemble - Son Of Psiloritis - Lyra

Fierce and independent, the people of Crete are loath to call themselves Europeans – let alone Greeks. Their folk music is a pure attest to this wild, unpredictable, and indomitable spirit. The principal instrument is a three-stringed "lyra", a fiddle which rests on one knee. Its strings are not pressed down but are grazed or struck by the fingernails, permitting fast and dynamic playing of ornaments and passages in a way unrivaled by any other melody instrument. The lyra is accompanied by the laouto, a double-strung instrument similar to the lute.Perched on the northern slope of Psiloritis, the highest mountain range in Crete, the village of Anogia has traditionally produced the island’s most celebrated lyra players. Just as Nikos Kazantzakis occupies a singular place in the literature of the island, its folk music owes much to the Xylouris family. Of all the lyra players and musicians of Crete, however, Psarantonis is clearly the most idiosyncratic. True to the barren, craggy slopes of Psiloritis, his music runs the gamut of tender to tempestuous, alternately caressing and chastising his instrument as if driven by the exalted spirit of the mountain winds. His harsh and utterly inimitable style of singing is a perfect counterpoint to his frequently experimental playing. Although his repertoire includes a wide variety of traditional Cretan folk music, he is primarily known for his own compositions and poems – and surprises.

World Network Vol.5: Argentina
Sexteto Mayor - Quejas De Bandone?n - Tango

When six senior citizens, who just happen to be the six most accomplished soloists in Buenos Aires, decide to sit down together and roll up their sleeves – something’s in the wind. And in this case, their sparkling, up-beat arrangements of classical tango pieces stemming from the first three decades of this century are anything but nostalgic. Bandoneon and violin dominate the foreground to trace the powerful and rhythmic outline of one exceptionally raunchy dance! Their music downplays the abrupt and studied movements we’ve come to associate with its contemporary performance – to trickle down to the hot and steamy roots of tango as it flourished in the urbane and hectic capital, Buenos Aires, at the turn of the century. Like jazz, tango was born in the bitches’ brew of brothels and bars at the end of the 19th century. It took root in the teeming port town of Buenos Aires, especially the outlying districts, where a frenetic strudel of French, Italian, Spanish and German immigrants had gathered to try their luck at the turn of the century. Tango was an expression of what they got – and didn’t get. A passionate and passive, visceral and anti-intellectual, lascivious and utterly sensual – "a wistful thought one can dance to." "Sexteto Mayor is, without a doubt, the best tango ensemble in Buenos Aires. The six soloists play like poets, letting their instruments sing". Le Monde German Phonographic Critics Prize

World Network Vol.6: USA
Sonny Terry & Brownie McGhee - Conversation With The River - Blues

Although these blues bards first met back in 1939, they first performed together in 1950 at the "Leadbelly Memorial Concert". Since then, Sonny Terry & Brownie McGhee have played the world over. Their memorable performances at the American Folk & Blues Festival, the Newport Jazz Festival, a tour of India (in 1960!), and extensive record albums have made their name a household synonym for the blues. Like many black musicians in the USA, Sonny Terry & Brownie McGhee did their fair share of menial labor before they were finally able to live from music alone. They hustled the streets of New York selling love potions and voodoo charms, and once even shared a supporting role in Tennessee William’s "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof". In his later years, Brownie McGhee founded a school in Harlem, aptly called "Home of the Blues". Sonny Terry has long been known as one of the greatest masters of the country blues harp. Brownie McGhee is, without doubt, one of the greatest guitarists in the history of folk blues.

World Network Vol.7: Zimbabwe
Traditional Mbira Musicians & Kevin Volans Ensemble - Mbira

The traditional folk music of the Shona tribe of Zimbabwe is played on the Mbira: a modest looking thumb piano with up to 54 metal tongues. The skill with which this instrument is played, however, is anything but modest. In fact, this highly developed musical tradition has fascinated Western composers of minimal music for quite some time. Mbira music is characterized by trance-like repetitions of a short melody which is subtly altered over the course of a piece. The solo parts of the individual musicians are woven into a communal tapestry of highly complex melodies. For many Africans, this instrument embodies the soul of their continent. An interesting contrast to these recordings from Zimbabwe is provided by the South African composer Kevin Volans, who orchestrates original Mbira patterns with the harpsichord and traditional rattle. His composition techniques bring to mind the minimal music of Philip Glass and Steve Reich. German Phonographic Critics Prize

World Network Vol.8: Eurasia
Ross Daly & Labyrinth - Mitos

Cosmopolitan is the only word to describe Ross Daly: an Irish national born in England, he grew up in Japan, Canada and the United States. After receiving an education in classical music in the US, he traveled to India, Afghanistan, Turkey, and Crete. "Ross Daly is a magician leading us on a dream-like journey through a labyrinth of Greek, Oriental, and Mediterranean sounds. His group, Labyrinth, which features more than 40 instruments including violin, clarinet, oud, sitar, tabla, rababa, lyre, and saz, is like a continent of its own," writes music journalist Armin Kerker. Daly’s unquenchable thirst for knowledge moves him to plumb the age-old depths of Eurasian folk music, bringing his discoveries back to life on their original instruments. In Greece, he has earned acclaim not only as a renowned soloist of authentic music from Pontes to the borders of the former Ottoman empire, but also as a prolific composer. "Labyrinth fuses the diverse cultures and traditions of such countries as Sudan, Armenia, Turkey, and Crete in a way that could only be considered brilliant. Unquestionably the world music concert of the year!" writes Journal Frankfurt about Labyrinth’s first performance in Germany. International Phonographic Award

World Network Vol.9: South Africa
South Africa Cologne Zulu Festival

More than just a consummate sampler of South African music, this CD is an historical document. The "Zulu Festival" in Cologne, Germany, marks the first time Ladysmith Black Mambazo or Johnny Clegg & Sipho Mchunu ever performed outside of the African continent – an event which spread like wildfire to set the ears of the world abuzz. One astute listener, Paul Simon, immediately recognized Ladysmith Black Mambazo’s talents and used them to lay the foundation for his extremely successful album and world tour. Here is a unique opportunity to hear the original vocal harmonies of this now world-famous choir. "Far more subtle than any gospel group, Ladysmith Black Mambazo can sing the stars down to earth." (TIME Magazine) By comparison, Johnny Clegg swaggers like a rough-and-tumble alley cat through the Zulu street-beat of urban Jo’burg. Astounded by his meteoric rise to stardom, Robert von Lucius, South Africa correspondent for the German FAZ comments: "He sold more than a million albums in France alone – 150,000 on the very first day. Only Michael Jackson, who, incidentally, canceled a concert in Lyon claiming that Clegg stole all his fans, had achieved such sales figures." International Phonographic Award

World Network Vol.10: Turkey
Mustafa Kandirali & Ensemble - Caz Roman

These WDR recordings of Mustafa Kandirali capture the foremost clarinetist of Turkey at the pinnacle of his musical career. Kandirali, as no performer before him, embodies the melting pot that is Turkey – a bridge between the multifaceted musical cultures of East and West. His astounding absorption and synthesis of diverse jazz idioms earned him the nickname "Benny Goodman of the Near East". No wonder that, after hearing Mustafa Kandirali play in Istanbul, Louis Armstrong immediately seized the opportunity to jam with him. His mastery is underscored by his playful treatment of seemingly disparate elements of popular and classical music, belly dance and jazz, which he never fails to drive to the peak of ecstatic perfection. Packed football stadiums attest to the fact that many consider him to be the last great soloist on this instrument. On these WDR recordings, Kandirali is accompanied by the kanun, (a trapezoid zither), darbuka drums, bongos, and oud. During a subsequent performance in Düsseldorf, this carefully groomed ensemble caused such a furore that they were literally held hostage until they played a full hour’s worth of encores! World Network Vol. 11: Portugal: Variacoes-Guitarra Portuguesa
Pedro Caldeira Cabral, composer and musicologist, is the pre-eminent virtuoso of the Portuguese guitar. This pear-shaped instrument with six double-strung metal strings, was developed in the 19th century and is cherished throughout Portugal for its passionate resonance as a concert instrument or as simple musical accompaniment for traditional Fado songs. Over the years, a highly complex picking technique was developed which demands supreme skill on the part of the musician while allowing him to articulate razor sharp tones of crystalline clarity. At the age of ten, Cabral took up the instrument and soon began writing his own pieces incorporating elements of medieval, Renaissance, Baroque, and popular music. "No matter what kind of music Cabral plays: his is a genius that reveals even to the unschooled ear the frail beauty, intelligence, charm and paradox of this supremely Portuguese instrument." World Network Vol. 12 Korea Seoul Ensemble Of Traditional Music

The traditional music of Korea has only recently been discovered in the West. This ensemble, gathered from the most renowned soloists from the best universities and music schools, employs a full range of traditional instruments to unfold a rich panoply of Korean musical culture in their renditions of solo and ensemble pieces. The delicate sounds of zithers and bamboo flutes clash with dynamic blasts from bamboo oboes, hourglass drums and gongs to form dense jazz-like improvisations which are, in fact, closely linked to traditional shaman ceremonies. These selections are played with such technical brilliance and expressiveness that they will undoubtedly appeal to even the most untrained ear. International Phonographic Award

World Network Vol. 15 France
Bratsch - Gypsy Music from the Heart of Europe
Bratsch have taken the music of the European Gypsies and turned it into something all their very own, bringing it to life with masterly skill in their atmospheric and compact concerts. Their music brings new vitality to both the traditions of Eastern Europe and the roots of "Tsigane Jazz", as made world famous by Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grapelli. With great emotion, poignant melodies and subtle arrangements, they create a unique acoustic music, which, for years, has been enthralling both the French audiences and the press in equal measure. Their first live album is a rare document, recording their very first German concert. "These vagabonds carry the nostalgia of Eastern Europe in their bundles, the vibrancy of the Mediterranean, the dexterity of the Gypsies and the irony of the Jews. Music without frontiers." (Le Monde) "A wondrous journey from West to East with a band of joyously abandoned nomads, who poke fun at all restraints. Whether the tunes they play are Gypsy, Russian, Armenian, or Yiddish, or their own original songs, they have the audience on its feet, shouting for more." (L’Express) "The music of Bratsch is vital, lyrical, raw and romantic, but never sentimental and certainly never saccharine."

Altan, De Dannan, Frank Gavin, Liam O’Flynn & Dessie Wilkinson - Treasures of Irish Music
Traditional dance tunes, fiery jigs and reels, slow airs and unaccompanied sean-nos songs are the stuff of this thrilling live recording featuring Ireland's best musicians. Among them are the fThis CD only confirms what true lovers of Irish Folk have already known for a long while: far older than the ballad-folk-song-traditions are the dance tunes, the fiery jigs and reels, the slow airs, the moderate melodies and the unaccompanied sean-nos songs. And it is just these traditions that are presented so thrillingly in this live recording featuring the elite of Irish musicians. Liam O’Flynn makes his uillean pipes, (the Irish bagpipe), whimper and shout with joy. Frankie Gavin’s bow flits across the strings of his fiddle with devilish speed. Dessie Wilkinson’s irresistible rhythms and trills on the tin whistle and long concert flute make you tap your feet and force you to dance. The relatively new quintet Altan is a true find. The sensitive and beguiling female vocals are captivating, the turbulent fiddle duet, masterly flute-playing and a rhythmically intricate network of bouzouki-guitar are all enchanting. The band has won recording prizes in many countries. Even Stereo is generous in its praise: "Altan is the most popular Irish folk combo today ... Altan shows yet again that Irish folklore has lost none of its high quality musical standard." ddle virtuoso Frankie Gavin, the most famous singer of the Emerald Isle, Eleonor Shanley and Altan — "the most popular Irish folk combo today" (Stereo).

World Network Vol.17 - Brazil
Paulinho Da Viola & Ensemble - Samba e Choro Negro
Certainly no other sambista in Brazil is as revered as Paulinho da Viola. He uniquely combines the rhythm of the samba with lyrics of amazing sensitivity. His poetry, recited in a soft and gentle voice, continually captures the rich emotional store of Brazil and its people. The symbol of cultural resistance which he has become is not merely confined to the era of military dictatorship. In affectionate admiration, both the cultural critics and the simple people on the street, speak of the "samba elegante".
These recordings made in Rio de Janeiro by the WDR (West German Radio and Television Network), became a media event in Brazil in the autumn of 1993. Paulinho da Viola had gathered the very elite of the samba musicians: Cabelinho the master percussionist of the samba schools, Cristov?o Bastos on piano and Joel Nascimento with his bandolim, Mestre Marçal on the cu?ca, the female vocals of Cristina Buarque and Amélia Rabello, and many others, together with his seventy-five year old father, whose guitar playing had already made musical history before the Second World War.
During four steamy, tropical nights, new recordings of the highest musical standard were created. And they provide a rare review over forty years of samba history, continually and decisively influenced by the virtuosity of Paulinho da Viola. Several choros - instrumental pieces rich in improvisation – document the melancholy side of Rio, inextricably linked with the wildly joyful vitality of the samba.

World Network Vol.18 Madagascar
Rossy, Tselonia, Mahaleo, Matrimbala, Justin Vali & Lolo Sy Ny Tariny - Music of Madagascar
For too long now, Madagascar, an island with a multi-cultural, indigenous mix of Asians, Africans and Europeans, has been a blank spot on the musical map of the west. But in the early 80’s, the first Malagasy ensembles had already come to Cologne, to record for the WDR (West German Radio and Television Network). These groups, still regarded as the top bands of the island, have strongly influenced many popular rock musicians of the west. Rossy, for instance, has played with Peter Gabriel and David Lindley. Mahaleo has performed in many parts of the world, Matrimbala and Justin Vali continue to thrill huge audiences in the USA and France. Mireille and Tselonina, with their voices of biting intensity, are celebrating a well-earned "comeback" on this CD. These recordings, featuring six hand-picked ensembles, made over the course of twelve years, comprise a dazzlingly colourful tapestry of sparkling musicality: filigree folk music of the island continent with beautiful voices, harps, guitars and accordions - edited by the greatest connoisseur of the genre, Birger Gesthuisen.

Nazakat & Salamat Ali Khan,
Raga Darbari Kanarra - Legendary Khyal Maestros
These historic recordings are living documents of the very first concerts of extra-European music, organised by the WDR (West German Radio and Television Network), in 1970 and recorded in top audio quality in the network’s large concert studio. The brothers Nazakat and Salamat Ali Khan are legends in the world of North Indian classical music. They are exponents of the Khyal, a vocal style going back to the 15th Century and regarded as the highest and most significant form of North Indian instrumental and vocal music. The Khan family has cultivated the Khyal for generations and the two brothers have developed it to further heights of perfection. As Nazakat Ali Khan died at an early age, these recordings are rare documents of the Indian vocal art at its very best. On this CD, the two Ragas and the Thumri performed by the Ali brothers are additionally accompanied by the Sarangi string instrument, the tambura and the tabla. "In my childhood home, I got to know the masterly art of Khyal singing by Nazakat & Salamat Ali Khan. And they have been my idols ever since." (Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan)

[05].Putumayo Presents: Jamaica
Legendary reggae artists offer a compelling overview of one of the world's most popular music styles. Putumayo visits Jamaica, the homeland of reggae music and mythical artists such as Jimmy Cliff, Peter Tosh, Black Uhuru and Toots & the Maytals. With roots in African tradition and influences from American Rhythm & Blues, Motown, soul and other popular music styles, reggae has taken the world by storm with its irresistible beat and powerful messages. Jamaica celebrates the joy of reggae with this collection of classic and new tracks by some of reggae's greatest voices. One of the most popular and influential music forms of the 20th century, reggae has traveled the world spreading its message of social and spiritual awareness. Reggae's popularity comes partially from its image and the power of its lyrics; but at its heart it is good time music, with a laid-back, funky beat that keeps your feet moving and your head bobbing. Reggae has traveled the world and found proponents in Africa, Europe and beyond, and is one of the most popular music forms anywhere. Putumayo invites you to return to reggae's roots with this collection of tracks by legends and discoveries from the land where reggae began. Jamaica features informative liner notes written by reggae critic Mark Gorney, enhanced with David Corio's artist photographs and pictures of the Jamaican landscape and architecture provided by Lonely Planet.

[06].Putumayo Presents: Puerto Rico
Exhilarating bomba, plena, salsa and son from The Island of Enchantment. Putumayo World Music is pleased to present Puerto Rico, a collection of entertaining songs from an island where music is an essential element of daily life. Puerto Rico follows the well-received Putumayo collections Cuba and Republica Dominicana and completes a trilogy of the music of the Spanish Caribbean. In recent years, Puerto Rican musicians such as Ricky Martin, Marc Anthony and Jennifer Lopez have been at the forefront of the Latin pop music boom. These artists would be the first to acknowledge that the traditional music of their homeland is at the core of their radio-friendly crossover hits. All grew up listening to Puerto Rican traditional styles like bomba, plena and musica jibara (country music), not to mention the urban grooves of salsa. Ricky Martin, for example, often ends his shows with a guest appearance from a plena ensemble, and the rhythms and melodies of the Isla del Encanto (Island of Enchantment) are fast becoming part of the mainstream. Cuba and Puerto Rico are often described as "two wings of the same bird," and this is certainly evident in their music. The songs and rhythms of both islands are irresistible, danceable and soulful and have influenced many forms of contemporary popular music and jazz. While the Cuban son has recently taken flight on a gust of international popularity, Puerto Rican traditional music is an equally important element of the Latin music boom.

[09].Putumayo Presents: Cuba
The beautiful melodies and exotic rhythms of Cuban son are guaranteed to have you dancing the night away. The music of Cuba developed from a unique set of historical and social circumstances. African slaves, brought to work on the Spanish sugar plantations, soon outnumbered the European colonists. The attitude of the Spanish political and religious institutions towards African culture, while undeniably oppressive, was more open than in some other colonial societies. Catholic priests did their best to convert the Africans to Christianity, but they overlooked their worship of African deities as long as they gave them Christian names. In fact, santeria, a religion that combines Catholicism with African deities and rituals, is still a key part of Cuban spiritual life. Most of the songs on this collection are a style called son, (lit. "sound") one of the most popular and influential Cuban musical forms. Son developed around the turn of the century in Oriente, a region in eastern Cuba. Migrating musicians brought son west to Havana in the 1920s, where it exploded in popularity. The fundamental element of the son is a rhythmic pattern called clave (lit. "key"). Played on two wooden sticks, called claves, this repetitive beat is the foundation upon which all of the other musical elements are structured. It gives son the propulsive swing that has endeared it to people around the world. Most contemporary salsa is based on son.

Crusades: Seen Through the Eyes of the Orient

Posted By MiOd On 9:00 PM 0 comments
Ensemble al-Kindi (JJ Weiss) & O Sarmini - Les croisades sous le regard de l'Orient
Last shutter of a trilogy started with “the Living room of music of Alep”, this double album, richly documented, evokes the memory of a Syrian prince of XIIe century, Ousâma Ibn Moundiqh. This topic gives the opportunity to Julien Jalâl Eddine Weiss and his unit Al Kindi most accurately to restore possible an old music of almost thousand years. This erudite and scientific work leaves space to many instrumental improvisations. Contrary to what the title could let suppose, this world which does not concede anything with the foils effects does not reflect the businesses of the war but those of the feeling in love. Translated for the first time, poetries of Ousâma testify to a romanticism as refined as unexpected.
Julien Jalal Eddine Weiss: Perhaps the foremost player of the qanun (Arabic plucked zither) of his generation, Julien Weiss is also the most prominent non-Arab to gain renown in the world of Arabic and Middle Eastern music. With his group the Al-Kindi Ensemble he has been sought after as an accompanist for the foremost singers of classical Arabic music, including Lofti Bouchnak, Hamza Shakkur, and Sabri Moudallal. As a musician, he is a purist, searching for the heart of classical Arabic music, looking into the past and resurrecting the music of what he sees as a golden age, the era of the 19th century takht (Arabic chamber ensemble). However, Weiss also looks to the future and has made innovations to his qanun, adding strings and adapting it so that it can accommodate many regional variances in the modes (maqamat) of Arabic music. Born in 1953 in Paris and growing up in the Swiss-French region of Alsace, Weiss originally studied classical guitar before discovering the world of Islamic music through the recordings of the great Iraqi udist Munir Bashir. He decided to devote himself to studying the music of the Near East, and learned the qanun under the tutelage of Kamil 'Abd Allah, Hasan Gharbi, Saadettin Oktenay, and Salim Husayn. He converted to Islam in 1986 and adopted the name Jalal Eddine. In 1983, dissatisfied with the growing size of standard Arabic ensembles, as well as with what he perceived as the encroaching westernization of Arabic music, Weiss formed his own group, named the Al-Kindi Ensemble after the great tenth century Arab theorist Abu Yusuf Ya'qub al-Kindi. The goal of the group and its leader has always been to only use traditionally Arab instruments and has included, variously, Ziyad Qadi Amin, Abd al-Salam Safar, or Mohamed Saada on nay (reed flute), Adel Shams El Din on riqq (tambourine) and Muhammed Qadri Dalal or Sufyan Naqra on ud (short-necked lute). Since its formation, the Al-Kindi Ensemble, with Weiss, has toured extensively throughout the Middle East, Africa, Europe, and Japan, and has also recorded extensively, both under its own name and as accompanists. The group's closest association has been with Shaykh Hamza Shakkur of Damascus, with whom they have released three recordings, including the two-disc set The Whirling Dervishes of Damascus in 1999. Weiss lives in a 16th century mansion in Aleppo, Syria, where he recorded his 1998 set The Aleppian Music Room and where he regularly gives house concerts in the traditional style. ~ Tom Chandler, All Music Guide
