The Royal Family of the Spanish Guitar

Los Romeros, The Romero Guitar Quartet, is a guitar quartet, sometimes known as "The Royal Family of the Guitar" — their personnel consists entirely of members of the Romero family. The quartet was founded in 1960 by Celedonio Romero, who grew up in Franco's Spain. All three of his sons, Angel, Celin and Pepe, had made their performing debuts by the time they were seven. In 1957, the Romeros moved to the United States, where they continue to reside. In 1990 Angel left the quartet, and was replaced by Celin's son Celino. Celedonio Romero died in 1996, and was replaced by Angel's son Lito.

Oum Kalsoum - Anthologie De La Musique Arabe - Vol. I

UMM KALTHUM - LEGENDARY SONGSTRESS OF THE ARABS

Called by some kawkab al-sharq (star of the East) and by others 'empress of Arab tunes,' Umm Kalthum, with a voice powerful and clear, can still be heard daily on radio stations in the multitudes of coffee shops and taxis all over the Arab world. Even though she died over two decades ago, her love lyrics, national odes and religious chants continue to affect millions of people. Her audience, as if on cue, hums along or cries in despair in reaction to her range of pitch, filled with nostalgia and yearning, touching the very Arab soul.

Boban Marković - Discography

PRESS FROOTS - "No wonder that over the years this band has walked away with every available prize" HERALD TIMES - "Some music is for the heed, some is for the feet and some is for the heart. The Boban Markovic Orkestar plays music for the whole body" SONGLINES - "Supremely rich, varied and inventive Serbian brass from a true musical thinker. It really is the best band in the land." JAZZ REVIEW - "Delightfully disorienting, scintillatingly surreal, like an aural mirage of something strange and beautiful. You think there's nothing "new" and/or unusual to listen to "out there"? Guess again." ALL ABOUT JAZZ - "The music ended with the crowd and band collapsing from near exhaustion in a sweaty "It's been a long time since I had one this good" bliss." THE NEW YORK TIMES - "There was a worthy ringer on the bill: the Boban Markovic Orkestar from Serbia. Its songs were pure propulsion: drumbeats as relentless as a machine and horn arrangements that could sound like a silver-toned chorale, a soul horn section or a choreographed brawl. Solos sprinted through the melee. It was dance music that was almost brutal in his gleeful efficiency." ROOTSWORLD - North American football marching bands at every level could learn a thing or three from Markovic and company. One could go on, as this is music whose endurance is both epic and assured. Consider son Marko's cameo trumpet appearance on "Roditeljska Sreca," whose melancholy audacity offers resonant aural evidence that the Markovic musical legacy is in good hands, putting a new generation of horn players on planetary notice. "Now dat's a trumpet! PASSION-MUSIC.CO.UK - Berlin Boban Markovic has won the prestigious Serbian Dragacevo Festival, and his remarkable instrumental knowledge has added new dimensions to Serbian brass band history. JAZZ REVIEW - "It's loud, rhythmic, uproarious, in-your-face party music - imagine a highly-caffeinated edition of Lester Bowie's Brass Fantasy vacationing in the thin-air mountains of Peru with a Mexican Mariachi band playing Gipsy folk tunes." GLOBAL RHYTHM - "This record is dangerous in the way the spring is dangerous: its exuberance owerwhelms the listener and demands:"You must change your life or end it." NOW TORONTO - "The Word Funky is not often associated with traditional Serbian Roma music. At least, not until trumpeter Boban Markovic assembled his badass brass band and began hooking up a storm." ROOTS WORLD, USA - "Able to leap tall buildings with a single bound, the Markovic Orkestar has moments of pure possession, but an ear for the extraordinary remains ever grounded in tight arrangement and superb musicianship." AL TARAB: MUSCAT UD FESTIVAL [4CD BOX SET]

This stunningly packaged box set from leading jazz label Enja is one of the most lavish and beautiful CD collections I have ever seen. Over four discs, we are treated to the highlights of this festival, dedicated to new and old works for the oud or Arabic lute by the leading players of the Arabic world. The first CD is for solo oud, the second is oud and voice and the third and fourth are for oud and orchestra and feature some newly commissioned works. All of this comes in an elaborate oriental-style cardboard slipcase and (weighing in at 1 kg) shows the way in how to present a musical genre artistically and in depth.
The Muscat Oud Festival, held from November 29 to December 1, 2005 in Muscat, Sultanate of Oman, was the first of its kind worldwide. It was organised as part of the cultural renaissance in the Sultanate of Oman that started around 1970. For the first time in history, this festival has featured on one stage the whole Arabic world's today's most admired players of the oud, the Arab lute, which has been the symbol of Arabic music since ancient times. Even today the oud plays an outstanding role in the traditional education of young Arabic musicians: Playing and singing, rhythms, music theory and melodic modes are taught on this instrument. At the festival, the oud was presented both as a virtuosic solo instrument and as a singer's instrument for self-accompaniment. Last but not least it was also presented as a concerto instrument with symphony orchestra -- a very recent development, now forced by the Sultanate's belief in cultural modernization. Beside Atiyya Sharara's oud concerto of 1983, two more orchestral works with the oud were brought to stage, composed especially for the festival by Egyptian Ammar El-Sherei who also played the oud part along with the Royal Oman Symphony. However, the first Muscat Oud Festival not only proves the rich possibilities of the oud but the wealth of Arabic music as a whole that has many musical genres and more than 150 melodic modes. Above all, the festival's overwhelming performances show the irresistible power of "al tarab", the Arabic concept of "enchantment" which means communicating joy and sadness to the audience in a deep, spontaneous, heart-gripping manner. Arabic musicians are noted for their ability to improvise in singing, playing or poetry and to move the listener by the sheer expression of the moment's feelings. Al Tarab reveals the blues and soul of the oriental world.

THE ROUGH GUIDE TO THE MUSIC OF [Asia & Middle East]

THE ROUGH GUIDE TO THE MUSIC OF [AFRICA].General Releases

[01].THE ROUGH GUIDE TO THE MUSIC OF MALAYSIA

With four different racial categories, Malaysia is a confluence of cultures. There's Malaya, Chinese, South Asian, and a mixed bag of others, with Islam being the reigning religion. That cultural grab bag is apparent in the country's music, at least if this Rough Guide to the Music of Malaysia is anything by which to judge. There's Sandii, one of the country's biggest stars (who's actually Japanese), who turns in a glowing performance on "Cinta Hampa." But she's just one of several outstanding female singers on this disc, like Siti Nurhaliza and Noraniza Idris. However, that's only one facet of the music. There's vintage Malay pop/rock from Fredo & the Flybaits, which is deliciously cheesy. There's also creativity and originality (still rooted in the tradition) from "Salih Yacoub," and a mix of Indian ghazal and Middle Eastern rhythms on "Ghazal Masri" from Mari Menari. The diversity is quite spectacular, and it's easy to trace influences in the music: the Zapin rhythm, for example, featured on "Burung Burung Ayam" is simply a softer version of Arabic Zapin. What remains apparent is that Malaysia has a strong identity that's more than the sum of its parts, while still retaining its various ethnic characteristics. ~ Chris Nickson, All Music Guide

[02].THE ROUGH GUIDE TO THE MUSIC OF IRAN
It's virtually impossible to consider the state of contemporary Iranian music without taking into account the country's contentious political relationship with the rest of the world. As compiler Simon Broughton acknowledges at the outset of his liner notes, the images of Iran received on the outside, particularly in the West, tend to give an impression that this complex country is populated entirely by religious zealots who would suppress any creative expression. Compounding that false notion is that not much indigenous Iranian music has been allowed to escape, to be heard and appreciated in the West. Not surprisingly though, Iran, both in its cosmopolitan city of Tehran and throughout the rest of the country, hosts a diverse range of traditional and modern artists, as well as many who fuse the two into a new whole. As all of the other entries in the Rough Guide series so admirably do, this 15-track collection of album tracks and previously unreleased field recordings, ancient and modern sounds alike, serves as a fascinating introduction to the breadth of Iran's musical landscape. Never is that diversity clearer than in the transition from Chengis Mehdipour's "Misri Koroglu" to Barad's "Dar Har Rage Man (Within Each of My Veins)." The former is a mesmerizing traditional piece, featuring an instrument from the lute family called the korpuz. In a raga-like way, it lures and builds in intensity, before giving way to Barad's track, an all-out rocker that, while somewhat sloppier and less sophisticated than most contemporary rock coming out of Europe or America, could have found its way to American pop radio -- had its lyrics not been grafted from the work of Sufi poets. The set's opener, the Arian Band's "Afsoongar (Glamorous)," is another pop track, but admittedly the collection's highlights are, in the end, the acoustic, traditional numbers featuring local instrumentation: Kayhan Kalhor and his kamancheh (spiked fiddle) collaborating with tanbur player Ali Akbar Moradi; Hossein Alizadeh, and Armenian duduk master Djivan Gasparyan's live contribution; Jahlé's lulling "Lullaby." Fittingly, the renowned Masters of Persian Music close out this intriguing, educational, and, most importantly, delightful set with the uplifting "Torkaman," from their critically acclaimed 2003 album Faryad -- a prime example of Iranian music that has managed to find its way, successfully, to Western ears before. The CD also includes a data track featuring an interview with the compiler. ~ Jeff Tamarkin, All Music Guide

[03].THE ROUGH GUIDE TO BHANGRA DANCE
Even in the wake of the Asian Massive movement, bhangra remains alive, although it's still a predominantly British phenomenon. However, the term bhangra dance is almost redundant, as it was originally a folk dance style that's evolved through Western instruments into something that packs the dancefloors in clubs -- though still marked by the beat of the double-headed dhol drum. But plenty of styles come under the umbrella of bhangra, as this compilation ably shows. There's the R&B of Veronica that wouldn't sound out of place in America, the almost indie rock of Manak-E, the more traditional acoustic sound of Madan Bata Sindhu, or the neo-Bollywood beat of Malkit Singh, who's been a bhangra star for two decades. The Americans are represented by the raga-bhangra of Soni Pabla, while Binder puts a touch of dancehall into "Billo Raneeay." The common factor of the tracks is their danceability, sometimes subtle, sometimes overpowering, as on Daljit Mattu's naggingly infectious "Taweet." Taz offer a poppy bhangra-soul mix with a killer hook, and it all closes with a classic, Panjabi by Nature's "Nain Preeto De," that brings roots and modern sounds together in perfect balance. ~ Chris Nickson, All Music Guide

[04].THE ROUGH GUIDE TO THE MUSIC OF CENTRAL ASIA
While there are a few handfuls of albums of Mongolian music, and older targeted albums for particular nations, this is more of a rarity: an album covering the music of Central Asia as defined essentially by the 'Stans' of the former Soviet Union: Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Tajikstan. The music on Rough Guide to the Music of Central Asia ranges from the classical traditions of the region, as hailing from Samarkand and Tashkent, to modern hard rock, as well as all points on the spectrum between the extremes. A number of the performers herein are fusionists and revisionists, combining traditional folk musics with contemporary sounds. The album starts on such a note with a mix of classical Kazakh tunes pounded over by electric guitars. Pop singers from the last decade of cultural exchange are sprinkled throughout the album, as recorded locally and through international channels (some have some decent fame in Europe). Folk performers and classicists also take their share of playing time, with masters of the various Central Asian lutes prominent, such as Turgun Alimatov. The album carries a little of something for everyone, in theory, without as many of the particularly foreign sounds, or the more weathered voices and wails that are sometimes known to accompany the music of the region. It's a more accessible entry point to the region's music than many, and may provide a good reference for current listeners to find something new, as well. ~ Adam Greenberg, All Music Guide

[05].THE ROUGH GUIDE TO BOLLYWOOD LEGENDS MOHD. RAFI
Continuing its run through the great stars of Bollywood's playback singing, the Rough Guide (and primarily compiler Ken Hunt) have moved to the third of the Big Four (Rafi, Lata Mangeshkar, Asha Bhosle, and Kishore Kumar) of the genre with an album of Mohammed Rafi's work. Here, he dips and croons his way through a number of classic performances from the films that his voice graced. The album opens with a number taking freely from the blaxploitation aesthetic, before moving into an early duet with Lata Mangeshkar, prior to their temporary falling-out. A simple happy song passes quickly, followed by a somewhat sparser work (sparse being a relative term in Bollywood orchestration) featuring Rafi's vocals more centrally, and a pair of duets with Asha Bhosle (Lata's sister). Another duet with Lata, post-falling-out, continues the stretch of multiple voices, and a couple of solo pieces showcase the essence of Rafi's vocal delivery exquisitely. The rest of the album follows much of the same formulas, showcasing Rafi in various lights, but especially as a light romantic singer in various contexts. Perhaps most interestingly to some of the Hindustani music purists, there's also a single track here featuring the singer in a more classical context alongside sarangi and sitar. It's a fine work, only muddied somewhat by the ever-present string sections. Ultimately, the listener should have an idea of the Bollywood aesthetic before diving into any full compilation of a single playback singer, regardless of their stature within the genre. That said, this compilation makes an excellent item for those with a basic appreciation of the genre, showcasing one of its finest singers in his best light, as well as in combination with other luminaries of the playback scene. ~ Adam Greenberg, All Music Guide

[06].THE ROUGH GUIDE TO RAVI SHANKAR
With a recent focus on Indian music taking a foothold on the Rough Guide series, it was only fitting that the grand ambassador of Hindusthani music would get a retrospective of his own. Taking a somewhat surprising turn here, the compilers have stuck with a number of relative rarities highlighting periods of Ravi's career, but not highlighting the more noteworthy performances and collaborations. The album opens with "Kathakali Katthak," a 1989 composition for a theater troupe. Moving on, "Transmigration" hails from the British film Voila, and a rendition of "Mishra Piloo" pairs Shankar with his premier tabla compatriot, Alla Rakha, for an extended, ponderous work. Two dhuns hold the middle of the album, with "Dun Man Pasand" paying tribute to the city of Paris and "Devgiri Bilawal" allows some of Ravi's trademark high-speed runs. "Reflection" comes from the film Transmigration Macabre, and somewhat obviously has a reflective atmosphere, with somewhat unusual rhythmic structures filling out the mood but keeping the whole a bit off-center. "Raga Patdeep" is mixed with a high-speed gat in "Sitarkhani Taal" for another of the signature displays of virtuosity that help to display why Ravi is an undisputed master of the instrument. Dropping Shankar oddly enough on a Shankar compilation, there's a short tabla solo from Zakir Hussain (Alla Rakha's virtuoso son and common accompanist for Shankar as well) from the Concert for Peace, and the album ends on an exceptional working of "Raga Bilashkani Todi" with Ali Akbar Khan on sarod, the two masters playing with some give-and-take as well as working together beautifully. The most notable highlights of Shankar's career aren't here themselves (the East Meets West with Yehudi Menuhin, the London and New York concerts, the San Francisco performances...), but representatives of those eras are present, as are some exceptional, though little heard, pieces from his extensive work with the film industry. There are certainly other worthwhile Ravi Shankar compilations out there, but this one falls in near the top as well, making an excellent starting point for those looking to just get a taste of the master's abilities before delving deeper into the catalogs. ~ Adam Greenberg, All Music Guide

[07].THE ROUGH GUIDE TO BOLLYWOOD LEGENDS - LATA MANGESHKAR
Any account of Indian playback music must start with Lata Mangeshkar. While it is not possible to more than list the most important playback singers, one, because of her supreme stature, merits detailed attention. Born September 28, 1929 in Indore, India, Lata Mangeshkar has been active in all walks of Indian popular and light classical music having sung ghazals, bhajans and pop. She is the supreme voice of popular Indian music, an Indian institution. Her importance rests not solely with her prodigious output. Many of her performances are considered timeless and undatable, although her voice has changed and matured over the years. In effect she sang the soundtrack for millions of Indians' lives. Until the 1991 edition, when her entry disappeared, the Guinness Book of Records listed her as the most recorded artist in the world with not less than 30,000 solo, duet and chorus-backed songs recorded in 20 Indian languages between 1948 and 1987. By 1990 she supposedly had worked on over 2000 film soundtracks as a playback singer -- meaning she pre-recorded the songs to which the films' leading ladies lip-synched. Dinanath Mangeshkar, her father, owned a theatrical company and was a classical singer, a disciple of the Gwalior school, and gave her singing lessons from around the age of five. She also studied with Aman Ali Khan Sahib and later Amanat Khan. Her God-given musical gifts meant that she could master the vocal exercises effortlessly on first pass and from early on she was recognized as being highly gifted musically. Also in the family were brother Hridaynath, a music director, and sisters Meena, Asha (the famed Asha Bhosle), and Usha. Hridaynath's soundtrack work included Lekin... (EMI India CD PMLP 5206) released in 1990 which, keeping it a family affair, placed Lata Mangeshkar well to the fore. Usha also became a playback singer. Only Asha Bhosle's career can compare in any way with her sister's award-strewn output although by 1994 reports were appearing to the effect that Asha Bhosle had overtaken her big sister's output. Lata Mangeshkar began work as playback singer in the 1940s and grew to become the most famous playback singer of the century. She received her first proper named credit under her own name in actor/director Raj Kapoor's 1949 film Barsaat (the soundtrack from which forms a third of the Barsaat/Aah/Aag album on EMI India CD PMLP 5188). She would sing for every major actress, including Geeta Bali, Nanda, Nargis, Nimmi, Nutan, Padmini, Sadhana and Meena Shorey. The sheer scale of recording activity makes any examination of her life and works impossible in such a confined space. ~ Ken Hunt, All Music Guide

[08].THE ROUGH GUIDE TO BOLLYWOOD LEGENDS ASHA BHOSLE
From perhaps the most prolifically recorded artist in worldwide history comes the Rough Guide installment devoted to Asha Bhosle. Bhosle has some 20,000 recordings to her name, making a compilation of 16 a nearly impossible. This compilation was culled from her full archives, with the help of Bhosle herself, as well as her son, so the songs work surprisingly well to represent the various facets of her work. The album opens with a song heavily informed by early rock & roll and swing jazz, a revolutionary sound for its time. It moves quickly through disco on its way to a pair of songs that are somewhat more standard in nature, showcasing the basic forms of film music and Hindustani classical at the same time. "Mera Kuchh Saaman" is a tour de force for her vocal ability, followed by a political work and a powerful chorus piece from the classic Mother India. A more experimental work follows, preceding some light classical, which itself is followed by a duet between Bhosle and her husband. A bit of a Hindu Marlene Dietrich number continues the stretch of innovations, followed by a shorter work that focuses on her ability to turn notes. The album finishes on a trio of classic Bollywood numbers, the final one including a duet with Mohammed Rafi. The full range of Bollywood sounds are represented here, all tied together under the banner of Bhosle's extensive work history. As such, it becomes an important album for those interested in the sound of the film factories of the subcontinent, as Bhosle's been there for nearly the full existence of the industry and usually at the forefront. Her vocals are outstanding, as one would expect, but the real treat for the listener is the chance to hear her ease in moving from one style to another and to be exposed to the full range of her abilities. Give it a listen as a veteran of the Bollywood recordings or as a newcomer -- it will serve well for either listener. ~ Adam Greenberg, All Music Guide

[09].THE ROUGH GUIDE TO THE MUSIC OF CHINA
Whatever you imagined about Chinese music, put it aside for this stunning compilation that captures China today. Yes, there's a brief (and actually very listenable) snippet of Chinese opera, but much of this is decidedly contemporary, whether it's the endearing, broken English semi-punk of Hang on the Box, or the simply otherworldly, captivating music of Urna. And to hear Tse Chun Yan on the qin, a type of zither, is to understand the possibilities of the instrument. The Chinese-German band, Wu Xing, offer plenty of space in their track, with a singing style that bridges the gap between classical and contemporary music. Following it with a classic cinema song from the pre-Communist era makes for a surreal juxtaposition, but still splendid, like walking farther and farther into an unknown but enchanting forest. While Chinese pop has often received a bad rap, the examples here show a very creative side, whether it's the atmospheric, building sound of Tats Lau, the rocker Cui Jian, or Ai Jing's classic "My 1997," which caused a controversy on its release in 1992. Put everything together here, even the intelligent new age of Kin Taii, and you have what's possibly the most persuasive -- and certainly the most accessible -- compilation of Chinese music available in the West. ~ Chris Nickson, All Music Guide

[10].THE ROUGH GUIDE TO THE MUSIC OF THAILAND
Thai music hasn't had much exposure on the world stage, but on the basis of the excellent Rough Guide to the Music of Thailand compilation, it's only a matter of time before it emerges as a global force. The emphasis here is on the lukthung and morlam styles, which originated in northern Thailand, illustrated in both traditional and more modern pop forms, but there are also oddities like the Thai Elephant Orchestra (which, yes, is made up of elephants) on "An Elephant's Swan Song." Although it doesn't say so in the comprehensive booklet, Chawiwan Damnoen's track would seem to feature the khaen, a kind of massive forerunner of the harmonica (with origins in China) that produces a fascinating full sound closer to an accordion. While the styles have been modernized, few have done it as effectively as China Dolls, whose "Oh Oh Oh" was one of the biggest Thai singles of 2001, a series of absolutely irresistible hooks. Much of the music here is at the pop end of the spectrum while still managing to sound well-rooted, rather than bland and faceless. And some tracks can be stunning, like "Phin Solo," a solo by Surasak Donchai on the phin, a Thai lute, which is simply virtuosic. Jieb Benjaporn's "Ma Kor Tho Tai" is lukthung that blends a heartfelt slow melody with guitar that would sound at home on an Ennio Morricone soundtrack to wonderful effect. More traditional sounds come from Fong Nam, playing classical music featuring the double reed pi. And veteran Benjarong Thanakoset offers some beautiful music on the bowed so-duang to complement it, helping to explore some of the many facets of Thai music. This isn't a complete look at the music of Thailand, as the notes point out. But for the time being, it does a valuable, informative, and extremely entertaining job. ~ Chris Nickson, All Music Guide

[11].THE ROUGH GUIDE TO ARABESQUE
People are familiar with rai or some of the more traditional music to emerge from North Africa and the Middle East, but lately there's also been an undercurrent of more adventurous music -- hip-hop and electronica. The roots still shout loud and proud, but the sounds (often made by artists who've moved to Europe or the U.S.) are as hard and modern as anything, anywhere -- for example, the rap of Clotaire K or Mafia Maghrebine, the edgy, skittering rhythms of U-Cef, or the powerful trance of Gnawa Impulse. And this compilation makes the ideal introduction, from the pounding beats of "A Muey A Muey," which was a revelation and breakthrough when it first appeared, to the contemporary remix of Ali Slimani's "S'Habi." The full range of the music gets an airing here, and for anyone with an urge to explore the lesser-known (for now) areas of Maghrebi music, this is the starting point. ~ Chris Nickson, All Music Guide

[12].THE ROUGH GUIDE TO THE MUSIC OF PAKISTAN
Pakistan's music has generally tended to be overshadowed by that of its neighbor India. (It did share an earlier volume in this series with India, but fully deserves its own.) And while the two countries share of lot of characteristics -- especially Pakistani and North Indian (or Hindustani) music, there's plenty going on in Pakistan besides the qawwali singing of the late, legendary Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan (who's represented here on the long closing track). Of particular note here is Abida Parveen, whose Sufi singing is very different from Khan's, with her voice quite jolly and enticing rather than overtly spiritual. There's a highly developed instrumental tradition, as Tsiganes de Sind show on "Popular Melodies," in which the harmonium -- an instrument brought from Europe -- carries much of the melody, and "Traditional Pashtoun Song," which features the rabab lute. It would be impossible to survey the country's music without including the love song known as ghazal, and Farida Khanum, the Queen of Ghazal, gives an exquisite illustration of the poetic form. Vital Signs merged Western pop with Pakistani music and proved very popular while it existed, although, to many Western ears, "Guzray Zamaney Waley" might seem a little cheesy and coy -- like Bollywood without the soaring melody. Adnan Sami Khan (supposedly the world's fastest keyboard player) grew up in England, but his "Lift Kara De" proved to be a huge hit in Pakistan, even if his speedy keyboard work isn't evident in Eastern pop. However, it seems vapid next to the singing of Noor Jehan, the leading lady of both acting and song. "Jis Din Se Piya," a Bollywood song with deeper soul, is caressed by her voice and a delight to hear. This album does Pakistan a service, letting people in on what's been a well-kept secret for far too long. ~ Chris Nickson, All Music Guide

[13].THE ROUGH GUIDE TO THE MUSIC OF INDIA
An album attempting to cover the multiplicity of styles available in Indian music. Given the enormity of such a task, it's amazing that Rough Guide managed to compile it into a single album at all. Of course, there are plenty of omissions to be had with such an endeavor, primarily in the folk end of the spectrum. The album starts out with a Bollywood classic, as Asha Bhosle's "Aaj Ki Raat" is taken from the original recordings for Anamika. Later in the album, Carolene performs "Thee Thee," another Bollywood number from the legendary A.R. Rahman with an aesthetic strongly reminiscent of Weather Report in many ways. The carnatic aspects are covered by N. Ravikiran on the chitra vina, as well as the "queen of melody" M.S. Subbulakshmi in a performance from the 1941 film Savithri. Classical Hindusthani music is supplied in quantity by exponents such as Sultan Khan on sarangi and Zakir Hussain on tabla in an adaptation of a Rajasthani folk song, and Kamalesh Maitra on his instrument of choice, the tabla tarang array. Sultan Khan shows up again later in the album in a jugalbandi with sitarist Ustad Rais Khan. The Rajasthani mode played upon by Sultan Khan and Zakir Hussain shows up again in fuller force as the Rajasthani troupe Musafir performs a rather noisy, but rather more authentic Rajasthani folk song toward the end of the album. Brass instruments abound in the transplanted tradition of off-key brass playing that's taken the world by storm since the Ottoman Empire's days, and is shown to its most jubilant, if almost cacophonous end in the work of Dharat Brass, and then to its most refined in the next track as Kadri Gopalnath uses the saxophone to adapt a classic carnatic kriti to a new instrument. Along the lines of innovation, Vishwa Mohan Bhatt provides a number on his namesake instrument, the Mohan vina: a Spanish guitar slowly transformed over time into a fully Indian instrument, but with the ability to make short runs in a Spanish method as desired. Also innovative is the Baul love song, performed here by Subhendu Das Bapi and Baul Bishwa. The song and instrumentation are purely traditional, but the manner of rhythm accompaniment is a step toward the European house/club scene, as performed to excellence manually on Indian percussion. While a few of the notable names in Hindusthani classical music are absent, there isn't really room for them with the multitude of other acts that are present on the album. For an overview of the multitude of styles available in the wide, wide spectrum of Indian music, this album makes an excellent step in the right direction for newcomers and those wishing to make good additions to their existing collections. ~ Adam Greenberg, All Music Guide

[14].THE ROUGH GUIDE TO BELLYDANCE
The Western image of bellydancing is associated with Greek or Middle Eastern restaurants, or some form of low-cost home seduction. The truth, of course, is something different. It's an ancient form of dance, requiring extremely complex body control to execute properly -- and it's original name, baladi, has nothing to do with the belly, translating instead as "country dance." But whichever way you look at it, the music on this compilation is made for the dance, whether it's the satisfying full Egyptian strings of Jalilah and Mokhtar Al Said's "Enta Omri," a piece originally written for the great Oum Kolthoum, or the stunning buzuq work of the late Mohamed Matar, whose nimble, inventive playing deserves greater exposure. The centerpiece, however, belongs to Nubian percussionist Mahmoud Fadl, with "Aament Bellah," a piece written to illustrate the power of the dance to lighten spirits and the oppressive weight over everyday life. At 12 minutes, it demands a lot from the listener, but amply repays it with shards of musical genius from the ensemble, and a rhythm that can't be denied. The music ranges from the classical compositions of Mohammed Abdel Wahab to folk pieces, presented in a manner that largely runs the gamut of Middle Eastern music. And if you get tired of using it for dancing, it makes excellent listening too. ~ Chris Nickson, All Music Guide

[15].THE ROUGH GUIDE TO THE MUSIC OF THE HIMALAYAS
Subtitled "Sounds From Shangri-la," which could erroneously scare off anybody who ever sat through the ghastly 1973 musical remake of Frank Capra's Lost Horizon, Rough Guide to the Music of the Himalayas gathers together a varied assortment of music from the high altitudes and plunging valleys of Tibet, Nepal, and Ladakh. Centuries of geographical and political isolation have preserved some traditions virtually intact, while others have been exported to the West via the perceptions of well-meaning and/or culturally rapacious musical tourists. The 13 tracks range from folklore and devotional styles to the sort of new age pastiches one imagines might cling to the inner ear of a frost-bitten, oxygen-deprived Sherpa somewhere on Mount Everest. Wisconsin-born guitarist Steve Tibbetts supplies a pair of the latter. He sits in with a husky sweet-voiced singing nun named Choying Drolma, and if the resulting collaboration has its cloying, aging-hippie moments, it is also rather charming in an aggressively mellow way. On the more authentic side, a field recording of the cloistered inhabitants of a Buddhist nunnery perform a looping a cappella chorale, exhibiting unexpected overtones and a cyclical, repetitive momentum that Philip Glass would certainly recognize. A nearly seven-minute sample of a bass-grounded, gradually ascending chant by monks from the Drete Dhargon at Drepong Monastery could, in the right hands, be one of the most effective lease-breakers of all time. Many music lovers would not expect to have much fun listening to a compilation from this part of the world, but should they decide to give it chance, they would be agreeably surprised. ~ Christina Roden, All Music Guide

[16].THE ROUGH GUIDE TO THE ASIAN UNDERGROUND
How you view the Asian underground might well be a matter of geography. To those in the U.S., it's an English-based scene that blew up in 1997 and exploded. In Britain, its roots date back to the beginning of the '90s, as this compilation so excellently explains. Starting with the granddaddy and inspiration to all, Ananda Shankar, it takes off through the pioneers, like State of Bengal and Black Star Liner, with Fun-Da-Mental's "Ja Sha Taan" an especially strong track with its strong qawwali influence. But there are no bad cuts here. Orchestral World Groove's "Pyar" is marvelously atmospheric and Asian Dub Foundation smokes, while Mahatma T offers an early glimpse of Talvin Singh, at one point the movement's poster boy. Full marks to compiler DJ Ritu -- a veteran of the scene herself -- for including a track by Sister India, who is unsigned to a label but remains quite successful (and from the sound of "Out of Place," the group deserves to be widely heard). If you though the Asian underground was all banging club beats, then this compilation is going to make you think again; it's a range of music, a mindset, if you will. And an unreleased track from Joi is simply icing on the cake. Maybe, as the notes suggest, the scene is currently in a lull; if so, you have to think it's just the calm before an even bigger movement erupts. A superb disc, excellently annotated. ~ Chris Nickson, All Music Guide

[17].THE ROUGH GUIDE TO NUSRAT FATEH ALI KHAN
There's no doubt that Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan was probably the greatest singer of qawwal, the devotional songs of the Sufi. He was, arguably, one of the greatest singers of the 20th century, up there with names like Pavarotti for the power and emotion of his vocalizing, much of which came in his ecstatic improvising, which could stretch out -- all too often the pieces would last more than ten minutes each, like "Hazrat Khwaja Kheliye Dhamar," a song from the original qawwali repertoire that Khan makes entirely his in this stunning performance, backed by his group, or party as they're known. This collection carefully balances the spiritual side of Khan's repertoire with the more secular ghazals and romantic poetry. His art was in his voice and the flights of extemporization that were specifically his. But while much of his career, and indeed his reputation, came from his work in the traditional manner, Khan was also a relentless experimenter, as shown by the final track here, "Dam Mast Qalandar," which brings in a female chorus, beats, and samples for a dance track that's actually messy and far from his finest work. The biggest problem with Khan, really, is picking the best of his work -- there's simply so much of it available. This does a very fair job of representing the man, and showing his facets and talents, more so than some other best of collections available, at least. Inevitably, with so much great work of Khan's on disc, the choices are subjective. But to hear him at his best, within the tradition, the 1985 Paris Concerts are a high point, and for his more experimental side, Mustt Mustt is little short of brilliant. This disc gives you a picture of the man; those two are a more direct route to his essence. ~ Chris Nickson, All Music Guide

[19].THE ROUGH GUIDE TO THE MUSIC OF INDONESIA
Like most releases in the Rough Guide series, this compilation provides a solid overview of the music of a particular region, but Indonesia's musical traditions are probably among the least well-known in the West. World music aficionados may be familiar with the gamelan orchestras for which the region has become known, but this 15-song CD exposes the broad diversity of sounds you might expect from a country with over 550 ethnic groups spread across more than 17,500 islands. From the traditional gamelan and throbbing percussion of CBMW's folksy "Sambasunda" and the lilting guitar picking and melancholy vocals of Grup Bamba Puang's "Los Quin Tallu-Tallu" to the more modern, Indian- and Arabic-influenced pop sounds of artists like Elvy Sukaesih and her former partner, Rhoma Irama, The Rough Guide to Indonesia provides an accessible introduction to some very unfamiliar musical traditions. ~ Bret Love, All Music Guide

[20].THE ROUGH GUIDE TO BHANGRA
A 13-track release that starts out with an example of traditional bhangra, dips a toe into the beginnings of its cross-cultural metamorphosis, and then dives headfirst into some examples of bhangra as sound system devotees know it best, with walloping beats, reggae riddims, and rap amongst the elements swirled into the folk elements. This Rough Guide sampler provides a very limited look at the style and its practitioners, unfortunately, and there is a sense that they needed to produce a rather more extensive release to give potential fans a better idea of what bhangra represents, and just how many countries and communities it connects with. That said, this is a record that is both listenable and danceable, and a lot of fun to boot. Also, most will learn something from the liner notes. ~ Steven McDonald, All Music Guide

[21].THE ROUGH GUIDE TO THE MUSIC JAPAN
The inimitable travel mavens at Rough Guides are not offering your average travel fare, and their counterparts in music are also looking for the unusual and the undercovered. This guide to Japanese music sidesteps the obvious shakuachis, kodo drums, and No theater music in favor of taiko-rap, ondo-funk, Okinawa-pop, and some forms yet to be hyphenated, let alone explained. It runs the gamut, from the mediocre pop of Kawachiya Kikusuimaru (toss-off synths and drum machines) to the brilliant avant-garde biwa (lute) and accordion of Yukihiro Goto and the minimalist koto quartet Koto Vortex. Humor abounds in the Surf Champlers' weird Tokyo take on the James Bond movies' theme. Fuzzy electric blues meets Okinawa in the music of An-Chang Project, fronted by the emotive vocals of Yasuba Jun. The set has it all, great, good, bad, and awful in pretty equal amounts, but for the good and great alone it's worth the price, and the bad and awful are certainly enlightening and entertaining. --Louis Gibson

L' Orient de l'Occident Flamenco & Ottoman Sufi Music

Kudsi Erguner: Along with his brother, Suleyman, Kudsi Erguner is one of the top players of the ney, a Turkish reed flute. In addition to his own recordings, Erguner has performed with Peter Gabriel, Maurice Bejart, Peter Brook, Georges Aperghis, Didier Lockwood and Michel Portal. His compositions and collaborations have been heard in the films, The Last Temptation Of Christ and Meetings With Remarkable Men, theater piece and film, Mahabharata, and ballets, Le Voyage Nocturne and Neva. Erguner's band, The Kudsi Erguner Ensemble, was formed in 1988, as Fasi, with the goal of preserving the classical music of the sixteenth century Ottomon Empire. Erguner hails from a musical family. His father, Ulvi Erguner, and garndfather, Suleyman Erguner, were well known players of the ney. In addition to what he learned from his father and grandfather, Erguner learned from the older musicians who often visited his childhood home. Erguner's knowledge of Turkish classical music was enhanced through his studies of the Sufi-brotherhoods. Launching his musical career, in 1969, as a member of the Istanbul Radio Orchestra, Erguner moved to Paris, six years later, to study architecture and musicology. The following year, he worked on Peter Brook's movie, Meetings With Remarkable Men, filmed on location in Afghanistan. Erguner later renewed his collaboration with Brook, composing and performing the score for a theater piece and film, Mahabharata. After conducting research in Turkey, through a grant from UNESCO, in 1980, Erguner returned to Paris and founded Mevlani, an institute for the study of the classical music and teachings of the Sufis. Between 1986 and 1987, Erguner spent lengthy periods in Pakistan recording and documenting traditional music for Radio France and France Musique. In late-1987, Erguner performed a concert of Ottoman music at the Royal Albert Hall in London. In 1988, Erguner collaborated with Peter Gabriel on the soundtrack of The Last Temptation Of Christ. The same year, he recorded an album with his brother, The Mystic Flutes Of Sufi, featuring preludes to ceremonies of the Whirling Dervishes. Kudsi and renewed their partnership in 1990, releasing a second album together, Sufi Music Of Turkey. The following year, Erguner released three albums -- Turquie Musique Soufi, with Ilahi and Nefes N. Uzel, Oriental Dreams, with Mahmoud Tebrizizadeh, and, together with thee Kudsi Erguner Ensemble, was one of several artists featured on Gazel: Classical Sufi Music Of The Ottomon Empire. In 1997, Erguner joined with Derya Turkan to record, Chemins. Two years later, he formed the Kudsi Erguner Sufi-Jazz Project, with Christof Lauer, Michel Godard and Marc Nauseef, and recorded, Ottomania. ~ Craig Harris, All Music Guide
A curious album concept from Kudsi Erguner, arguably the best-known ney player today. At the core of the album is the combination of flamenco and Turkish music as the Occidental and Oriental of the Mediterranean. At the same time, flamenco was informed by the earlier combination of Occident and Orient under the Umayyad caliphate and Turkish music was informed by both Sufist principals and Byzantine Greek principals. Two differing combinations of the East and West are then combined in another iteration, with qanun, oud, and ney joining the usual guitar over and under both basic flamenco song and cante jondo. The result tends to waver between being more strongly one form, then the other, rather than solidly acting as a fused whole. Nonetheless, the musical proficiency here is striking, and the flamenco singers are noteworthy. There are a number of arguably better albums of both flamenco singing (i.e. Cante Flamenco) and Turkish music available, but this is a valiant attempt at fusion worth hearing for those already in the know for the component genres. ~ Adam Greenberg, All Music Guide

Hossein Alizadeh & Djivan Gasparyan - Endless Vision

Persian and Armenian Songs

This meeting of two musical masters in Tehran in the summer of 2003 was played out in front of an audience of 12,000. Armenian duduk (a cylindrical wooden flute that is often referred to as an Armenian oboe) maestro Djivan Gasparyan and Persian shurangiz (a new Iranian six-string lute) wizard Hossein Alizâdeh were backed on this occasion by Iran's Hamavayan Ensemble, and two other duduk players -- Armen Ghzaryan and Vazgen Markaryan (bass duduk) -- in a program of traditional Persian and Armenian songs. The first selection, "Birds," begins with shurangiz, hand drums, and spare duduk melodies, as two voices -- male and female -- begin to moan and then sing the poetry of Mahmoud Moshref Azad Tehrani, the most famous and controversial of Persian poets (Azad died in 2006). The Ensemble has made this a standard part of their repertoire for a number of years, and its embellishment by Gasparyan adds depth and dimension of the sung voices, underscoring their sad, deeply moving quality. The "Armenian Romances" are improvisations in dastgah. The dastgah: Shur is an eight-note scale which also has a group of melodies assigned to it called "gushes" which are usually made up of four or five tones. Basically, this is the designated term for improvisation in a Radif, or mode. The group plays the traditional Azerbaijan folk song "Sari Galin," ("The Yellow Bride"); the quiet dignity of the tune is sung in duet and spins itself out slowly and purposefully. "Call of the Birds," is an instrumental with the band and Gasparyan accenting the rhythmic cadences. Gasparyan's own poetry is heard on "Mama," with the other duduk players preparing the ground for him -- one playing melody, the other a drone. Gasparyan's voice is high, lonesome, half-whispered, half-sung. It's devastatingly beautiful. A shurangiz improvisation follows, and then comes the program's closer, a gorgeous song with poetry by the Islamic mystic poet Molavi. What the music amounts to is a space out of time, where the past lives eternally into the present and the present gives up its preoccupations with future. The music itself is poetic, full of space, haunting modes, and spiritual melody that is as rooted in the body as love itself is. Highly recommended. ~ Thom Jurek, All Music Guide

Beyond Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan October 12, 1998: In a 13th-century Sufi poem a sage explains that "music is the shrieking of the doors of Paradise." "I don't like the shrieking of doors!" complains a "narrow-minded fool," to which the sage replies, "I hear the doors how they open, but you hear them when they are closed." That ancient wisdom may apply to two lavish compilations of Sufi music, Echos du Pardis: Sufi Soul and Hommage à Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan (both on Network). Some listeners will readily ascend to music lovers' heaven; others will remain below wondering what all the fuss is about. But if you're one of millions worldwide who have been moved by Pakistani qawwali singer Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, it's a chance worth taking. Nusrat opened the doors. These two double-CD sets, and the photographs and text that accompany them, give a glimpse of what lies beyond. Sufism is a mystical sect of Islam that includes some 50 million people from Morocco to Southeast Asia. Its disregard for religious formalities, its goal of inspiring a union between human beings and God, and its outpouring of artistic expressions have earned it the scorn of mullahs throughout the Muslim world. But the beauty of Sufism is at times almost enough to counterbalance all the bad PR that international terrorists have brought to misunderstood Islam. The music on Hommage à Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan is equally good, and more accessible. Nusrat opens the collection, and a number of other qawwals contribute recent works in tribute to him. Some shed light on Nusrat's influences, like that of Punjabi singers Salamat and Shafqat Ali Khan. The elder Salamat was one of Nusrat's idols, and in his improvisations you can hear elements of North Indian vocal music that Nusrat incorporated. And others, like Asif Ali Khan, offer eulogy in the form of a furious miasma of joyful grieving: "My beloved has returned home/I forgot everything, including the prayers/Bring bowls of wine, let us celebrate." Some of Hommage draws from farther afield, like the track by the Kamkar Ensemble, a Kurdish family orchestra from Iran. Their melodious singing has an almost Latin sensibility, and the eight instruments provide lush, stately backing. The biggest surprise comes from rising Senegalese star Cheikh Lo, a member of the Baye Fall sect, an African offshoot of Sufism. Acoustic guitars tangle in a vaguely Eastern mode, and the song evolves a sing-along refrain that nicely melds Nusrat's gift for a hook with Senegalese folk music. Lo's clear, keening vocal also does Nusrat proud. By Banning Eyre (see http://weeklywire.com/ww/10-12-98/boston_music_5.html)
The late Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan was one of the greatest, and most passionate performers of qawwali music in all time. His performances showed the world the incredible beauty and intensity of Sufi music, the mystical traditions of the Islamic faith. These traditions have taken hold not only in Pakistan, but across the Islamic world, from the coast of West Africa to the islands of Indonesia, so it is only fitting that other Sufi musicians from around the world have gathered together on this two-CD set to pay their respects to one of the greatest masters of qawwali music. Lovingly packaged and complete with a booklet about the artists and the life of the late Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan (including a picture of his tomb), this set contains a hauntingly beautiful collection of devotional music. The first CD opens with an older performance by Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan himself, "Na Ruk Te Hai Aansoo" or "Love Has No Destination", and continues with performances by other Sufi artists. Sheikh Hamza Shakkur of Syria and Julien Jalal al-Din Weiss perform classical Arabic music of the Mawlawiyah brotherhood, Azeri singer Alim Qasimov performs a mournful mugham, Munadjat Yulchieva sings an Uzbek poem, and Senegalese pop singer Cheikh Lo (himself a Mouride) offers the zikr song traditionally used to introduce Sufi ceremonies. Two outstanding Pakistani performers are included, Abida Parveen and Shafqat Ali Khan, along with Kurdish singer Sharam Nazeri who draws upon the poetry of Jalal al-Din Rumi. The second CD opens with Punjabi singing from Mehr and Sher Ali, themselves Chistiyya Sufis like Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan. It then continues forth with a classical north Indian performance of dhrupad from the Mallik Family, another poem from Alim Qasimov, classical Persian rhythms of the Kurdish Kamkar Ensemble from Iran, another Uzbek song from Munadjat Yulchieva and a duet between Salamat Ali Khan and Shafqat Ali Khan. This second CD shows some of the best examples of classical and devotional music from the Indian subcontinent. The CD closes with a performance of the famous "Mera Pia Ghar Aaya" (My Beloved Has Returned Home) done by Asif Ali Khan. This CD set is beautiful, intense and ephemeral. There is a depth of emotion here rarely seen in music these days, no doubt because this collection is focused on love and loss, devotion and divinity. It also showcases the mystical side of Islam, pure love of God, something that western news media tries to exclude from the public these days sadly. This set is an essential buy for fans of the late Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, something that will bring back memories of one of the greatest qawwali performers of all time. But it also introduces a number of other great Sufi singers, and showcases some of the greatest musicians from across the Muslim world. Odds are you will fall in love with their performances and go seeking out more from, say, Cheikh Lo, Abida Parveen, Sheikh Hamza Shakkur, the Kamkars Ensemble or Alim Qasimov. If you liked this CD, I'd also recommend checking out Sufi Soul: Echos du Paradis, and Ambiances du Sahara: Desert Blues, both from the same label. Both are boxed sets featuring two CDs. The former focuses on global Sufi music, and includes some of the same artists featured on this CD (Munadjat Yultchieva, Sheikh Hamza Shakkur & Ensemble al-Kindi, and of course Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan) alongside many other well known Sufi singers. The second focuses on music from the deserts of north and west Africa, inlcuding performances by Youssou N'Dour, Baaba Maal, Dimi Mint Abba, Abdel Gadir Salim, Aster Aweke, Hamza el Din and Mahmoud Ahmed. Both are excellent compilations, and I strongly recommend them.

THE ROUGH GUIDE TO THE MUSIC OF [AFRICA].General Releases

THE ROUGH GUIDE TO THE MUSIC OF "NORTH AFRICA" THE ROUGH GUIDE TO THE MUSIC OF "South & East Africa" THE ROUGH GUIDE TO THE MUSIC OF "West Africa" THE ROUGH GUIDE TO AFRICAN MUSIC FOR CHILDREN

Hallelujah! Finally an album for children that doesn't talk down to them. That could just be because the music here was selected by kids, who obviously have better taste than most adults -- and certainly more adventurous. A disc that ranges from the electro roots of Mali's Issa Bagoyogo, through JJC & 419 Squad's rap, to the glorious Zulu harmonies of Ladysmith Black Mambazo, is definitely doing something right. The disc also spans the continent very well, with some great sounds from Ethiopia, Nigeria (a smoking track from drummer Tony Allen), South African, and even the all too often ignored Mozambique. To anyone interested in music, every track is a killer, too, often pushing at envelopes, like the hip-hop of Tanzania's X Plastaz with "Kutesa Kwa Zamu" or the mix of Congolese soukous with Zimbabwean chimurenga that earmarks "Tornadoes vs Dynamos (3-3)" by Real Sounds, which also brings in the pan-African passion for soccer. This disc serves as a very strong reminder that kids don't need things simplified. They can enjoy good music every bit as much as adults, and with just as much variety -- certainly without the twee quality that characterizes so much children's music. Listen by yourself or with your kids; either way you'll love it. ~ Chris Nickson, All Music Guide

Perhaps the greatest craze in African music yet, the advent of African rap has encompassed the whole of the continent, with performers popping up in every country and in every tongue. Taking note of the wave is this Rough Guide compilation that takes a stab at covering the bulk of the major regions and performers, though the full spectrum is far out of the reach of a single disc. The rap of Africa is in many ways far more lyrically driven than beat-driven, as opposed to the heavy regard of the all-powerful beat in American hip-hop. The lyrics are generally based in social commentary as is the majority of African music, refreshingly different from the bulk of American rap's posturing. What one might note here most surprisingly though is the amazing homogeneity of the rappers themselves. Each one has his own style to some degree, but there's an overall degree of fluid slickness and cool, relaxed delivery, reminiscent of the French rap scene (MC Solaar in fact was originally based in Africa). What changes notably from track to track however is the backdrop and the language in question. The various artists continually make use of both traditional instruments, local musical flavors, and native tongues to assert their originality, and more importantly their origins. The album opens with a Tony Allen collaboration with London rapper Ty, then moves into the pinnacle of current South African rap with the somewhat harder Prophets of da City. The omnipresent Manu Dibango displays his ability to turn a trick with a rapper in "Senga Abele" with some surprising fluidity, and the godfathers of African rap, Positive Black Soul, show off the natural tongue-twisting ability of the Wolof language. Tanzanians X Plastaz interestingly make use of influence from the Maasai tribe, a surprisingly functional mix of the contemporary and the extremely traditional. Reggie Rockstone from Ghana doubles up the previous influences as he uses some funky Afro-beat loops à la Fela over which he raps in Twi in a bouncing style reminiscent of some early-'90s American (and British) acts like Das EFX. Mabulu uses the marrabenta guitar style as a backdrop and Angolan Das Primeiro mixes in aspects of other Portuguese colonies with samba and morna finding their way into his stylings. Representing the Dakar scene (the ultimate hotbed of the style) is Pee Froiss. South Africans Trybe mix some five or six languages with a sultry drum loop and early Tanzanian act the Hard Blasters present the ultimate reworking of the Fu-Schnickens sound. After a quick stop in Congo-Kinshasa, the album finishes up with the Malian trio Tata Pound, whose machine gun-delivery is something worth hearing regardless of language. African rap is a pan-continental craze right now, but it's quickly splintering into separate styles and forms. This compilation does an admirable job of collecting the various threads and showing both their diversity and their similarity. ~ Adam Greenberg, All Music Guide

It is common knowledge that the origin of the blues lies in West Africa, and that it was carried to America by slaves. The Rough Guide to African Blues explores the blues in its native setting, as it were, in mostly acoustic settings, although the vintage sounds of Ayaléw Mèsfin & Black Lion Band from Ethiopia add a big-band touch (whether they really qualify as blues is perhaps debatable). One of the most authentic-sounding pieces combines American Corey Harris with the late Malian guitar legend Ali Farka Touré (who was a fan of John Lee Hooker). But Afel Bocoum, Boubacar Traoré, and Nuru Kane all get to the heart of the blues, while Mariem Hassan and Etran Finatawa bring more electricity, somewhat closer to the music of Tinariwen, the hottest thing in desert blues, who are surprisingly not represented here. Bob Brozman teams with Djeli Moussa Diawara for an interesting African take on a Skip James song, combining guitar with the kora harp very successfully. Whether Sudan's Rasha falls into the equation is also dubious -- there's more than a touch of Sade in her sound, but Daby Balde and Baaba Maal bring it all back home in excellent fashion. So what to make of this compilation? Like the curate's egg, it's good in parts, a sampling of African blues, but also a bit beyond. It would have been good to have had Ali Farka Touré alone, and this isn't as complete as it might have been; still, it forms a more than reasonable introduction. ~ Chris Nickson, All Music Guide

THE ROUGH GUIDE TO THE MUSIC OF "West Africa"

THE ROUGH GUIDE TO THE MUSIC OF "NORTH AFRICA"
THE ROUGH GUIDE TO THE MUSIC OF "South & East Africa"

[01].THE ROUGH GUIDE TO WEST AFRICAN GOLD

While there's plenty of great African music being made today, a lot of people forget (or don't know) that there are also many classic vintage sides. Covering several West African countries, from Mali to Ghana, Rough Guide to West African Gold is a veritable feast of beat and melody. Some of the names, like Rail Band DeBamako (better known as the Super Rail Band), with the glowing voice of Salif Keita on vocals, or Orchestra Baobab, the Senegalese group who added Latin music to their native style to great effect. Equally joyful is the elastic sound of Bembeya Jazz National, where the guitar work sparkles, or E.T. Mensah, who for many years was the king of high life music in his native Ghana. With a wealth of material to choose from, it's no surprise that there's not a dull track on the compilation, whether it's Eric Agyeman's jazzy guitar work on "Abenaa Na Aden?" or Dexter Johnson & the International Band taking on the Latin classic "Manicero." At times it might sound raw, but that's part of the pleasure. There's never a sense of anything being slick or over-produced. Instead, passion is the motivating force here, everyone playing as if their lives depend on it. These tracks, recorded between the '50s and '80s, capture the sense of independence and possibility that pervaded the region at the time, The sound of a Golden Age indeed. ~ Chris Nickson, All Music Guide

[02].THE ROUGH GUIDE TO MANU DIBANGO
A nice compilation of the ultra-varied career of Manu Dibango. The disc jumps from era to era comfortably, but hits upon almost every phase Dibango passed through (with the surprising exception of the original "Soul Makossa"). The album starts out in his early years with a sax-saturated ska in "Ngolowake," moving to the solo marimba work, a smooth jazz-esque version of "Nature Boy," and an orchestral work from his early days. Also included are pieces from the makossa days, contemporary R&B, urban grooves and more. The album ends with a contemporary remix of "Soul Makossa" and "Big Blow," with Bill Laswell and Herbie Hancock taking the sideman roles. Dibango has an über-impressive resume, and this is one of the better collections to introduce listeners to the variety present. ~ Adam Greenberg, All Music Guide

[03].THE ROUGH GUIDE TO YOUSSOU N'DOUR & ETOILE DE DAKAR
It's widely accepted wisdom that the early, rawer material of Youssou N'Dour had an edge he's never been able to recapture since becoming a major international star. Certainly his more recent studio recordings lack the urgency and energy of the material here, which was recorded in the early '80s when he was the frontman of Etoile de Dakar, before personnel splits left him heading up the new Super Etoile de Dakar and starting to make his first global inroads. The Cuban influence that had pervaded Senegalese music was still apparent at the beginning of N'Dour's career, and it can be heard in tracks like "Absa Gueye" and "Jalo," while the epic "Thiapathioly," a big West African hit, shows the start of the transition to a more individual sound, the juddering, polyrhythmic mbalax, with its sabar drums cutting across the beat. By the time the last couple of tracks from the new band appear, the group had turned into a powerful, unstoppable outfit with N'Dour's trademark high, keening griot voice the central instrument, since he was no longer sharing the spotlight with the two other vocalists, who'd left to form Etoile 2000. As an insight into N'Dour's relatively early development -- he was in his early twenties during this period -- this shows him gaining in confidence and ability, both as a singer and a writer, slowly nailing down the percussive mbalax style that would bring him fame and developing his charisma in front of a band. ~ Chris Nickson, All Music Guide

[04].THE ROUGH GUIDE TO HIGHLIFE
In Ghana and Nigeria, highlife was one of the main popular musics of the 20th century, made for dancing. While this collection doesn't reach back to the very early days of highlife, it does cover a fair number of classic artists, including the great E.T. Mensah, acknowledged as the King of Highlife. Joe Mensah (no relation), offers a jazzier take on highlife with the lengthy "Bosoe." While essentially guitar music, saxophone is often featured, as in Celestine Ukwu's "Igede." The incessant groove swirls all through these tracks, about the only common denominator between the pieces and the times. Unfortunately, no dates are given for the tracks, with the exception of George Darko's "Hilife Time" from the '80s, where the rigid drum machine and keyboard work against the flow of the music rather than with it; this needs a human touch to make it real. More than half the tracks here are unavailable on either vinyl or CD, making this a treasure trove for anyone remotely interested in the percolating music. And the excellent sleeve notes give a short history of the style. ~ Chris Nickson, All Music Guide

[05].THE ROUGH GUIDE TO THE MUSIC OF NIGERIA & GHANA
It might be more apt to call this a guide to some of the musical styles of Nigeria and Ghana. While both highlife and juju are well represented, with the less conspicuous, very percussive Fuji genre evident in the track by Adewale Ayuba, something's missing -- Afro-beat. One can only assume the label couldn't license any tracks by Fela Kuti or his son, Femi; instead, the closest they've come is a cut by Fela's former drummer, Tony Allen. It's fabulous stuff, very cutting edge in its approach -- but it's not Afro-beat, which is arguably the most successful music to come out of the area. That said, the rest of the album is great, tracing juju from its pioneer, I.K. Dairo, to the man who brought it to the international stage, King Sunny Ade (and having an early-'80s cut, rather than something more familiar, proves to be an inspired idea, as you can see the succession from Dairo). And the highlife content from Ghana, often difficult to find in the West, is exemplary. The "King of Highlife," E.T. Mensah, offers "Day By Day," a classic cut, followed by the wonderful guitar player Eric Agyeman, who brought a Congolese rhythmic feel to the music, and then Chief Stephen Osita Osadebe, whose Nigerian take on this Ghanaian music is much more percussive. So, in what it does cover, this compilation does a generally excellent job, although you have to wonder why modern artists like Lagbaja weren't included. And if you understand from the beginning that this is far from being a complete exercise, you won't be disappointed. But if you want the whole story, well, this just isn't it. ~ Chris Nickson, All Music Guide

[06].THE ROUGH GUIDE TO THE MUSIC OF CAPE VERDE
This CD collects works from the tiny islands off Senegal and, as is usually the case with Rough Guide albums, the spectrum is decently covered by a huge number of artists from the best known to the essentially obscure. The four basic forms of Cape Verdean music are covered here: the haunting vocals of morna, the percussive batuque, the accordion-based funana, and the fast-paced coladeira dances. The two greatest morna singers are present in Maria Alice (performing her signature, "Falso Testemunho") and Césaria Evora. Coladeiras are well represented by both Simentera and Nilsa Silva's ensemble. The music is generally relaxed, with even the most up-tempo works having a soft tone to them; a case in point is dance musician Tito Paris and "Dança Ma Mi Criola," a light but peppy number that still maintains a feeling of calm. The instrumental work is basically always worth hearing on this album, as numerous virtuosos and multi-instrumentalists are represented throughout. For an overall look at the major genres and styles of Cape Verdean music, this is a wonderful way to go, avoiding the usual pigeonholing of Cape Verde as a solely morna-based land of music. Pick it up as a great overview. ~ Adam Greenberg, All Music Guide

Like most of the Rough Guide series, this CD takes a well-rounded, all-encompassing look at the music of a particular region, but The Rough Guide to the Music of Senegal & Gambia stands out due in large part to the rich musical traditions of the region it covers. Even casual world music fans are familiar with the buoyant sounds of Senegalese singing sensations like Youssou N'Dour and Baaba Maal, while others like Cheikh Lo and Mansour Deck have achieved only slightly lesser international recognition. All those stars, and a few future ones, are covered on this 13-song compilation, which proves why the music of Senegal and Gambia has emerged as a worldwide favorite. ~ Bret Love, All Music Guide

[08].THE ROUGH GUIDE TO WEST AFRICAN MUSIC
How do you try to capture the music of such a large, rich area as West Africa on one disc? The answer, of course, is that you can't, although this compilation does glide over some of the high spots -- but only some. So there are classic performances by Mali's Super Rail Band and Ali Farka Toure, plus Orchestra Baobob, revealing the influence Cuban music had on the nascent homegrown scenes in both Senegal and Mali. Altogether, it offers some semblance of a picture, fleshed out by the thrilling kora work of Toumani Diabate on "Djelika" and the south Mali wassoulou vocals of the excellent Oumou Sangare, who brings a rougher dimension to the proceedings. There's no Youssou N'Dour or Baaba Maal to show their stuff as Senegal's brightest stars (West Africa's biggest names, in fact), but Maal's sidekick, griot Mansour Seck, is represented. Perhaps one of the oddest choices is the inclusion of Dimi Mint Abba from Mauritania. Granted, she's the country's most famous singer, but there are others artists of greater stature from the region not included. E.T. Mensah is an astute pick for Ghanaian highlife, and Kante Manfila is probably a fair nominee for mande music. The real problem with this album isn't the music, which is glorious throughout, but the fact that it suffers from the size of its ambition and the inability to full realize it. Within a small range -- Ghana, Mali, Senegal, and Mauritania -- it does a partial job, but to call it a summing up of West African music is neither fair to the geographic area nor the listener. ~ Chris Nickson, All Music Guide

One of the bands from the header picture of We Love Music. Loving Bratsch music means not only to love music but to enjoy in music. So ... it's music for hedonists : -) With masterly skill Bratsch has revived the musical art of the European Gypsies. With stirring emotion, poignant melodies and subtle arrangements, they create a new acoustical music in which the "nostalgia of Eastern Europe, the vibrancy of the Mediterranean, the dexterity of the Gypsies and Yiddish irony all converge. Music without border!" Richard Clayderman - The Best of [Vol.1-6 ]

With his lush, sophisticated, instrumental, approach to pop music, Richard Clayderman (born: Phillipe Pages) is, according to The Guinness Book of World Records, "the most successful pianist in the world." Clayderman's albums routinely sell millions of copies and his concerts are quickly sold out. In a review of his 1985 Carnegie Hall concert, Variety wrote, "(Clayderman's) main appeal lies in his youth and boyish good looks...coupled with his gentlemanly charm and his thick French accent, they promise to rope in the romantically inclined middle-aged Yank ladies who cotton to this ilk of soothing entertainment." Nancy Reagan referred to Clayderman as "the prince of romance." Instructed in classical piano by his father, Clayderman enrolled in the Paris Conservatory of Music at the age of twelve. Four years later, he placed first in a piano competition at the school. Despite his classical background, Clayderman opted for popular music when he launched his professional career. A tour as opening act for French rock musician Johnny Hollyday introduced him to an international following. Clayderman's debut album, Ballade Pour Adeline, recorded at the urging of producers and composers Oliver Toussaint and Paul De Senneville in 1977, sold more than twenty million copies and was distributed in 38 countries. Clayderman, who took his stage name from his Swedish grandmother, has continued to tour throughout the world to enthusiastic audiences. A live concert, broadcast on Chinese television in 1987 attracted more than 800 million viewers. ~ Craig Harris, All Music Guide

It has taken three years for this multi-cultural big-band to follow up their widely ce-lebrated debut CD Border Confusion. In that time, they have received numerous awards, given countless concerts and been lauded by critics and audiences alike: "These musicians from the Balkans perform their repertoire with a lot of humour: a marvellous alternative to Emir Kustrica's No Smoking Orchestra!" (Le Monde). And their new repertoire is brim-full of imaginativeness. Besides numerous compositions of their own, it includes exciting renderings of great traditional Balkan music. And it again crosses borders, playing about with themes from Macedonia, Serbia, Bosnia, Albania and Turkey. The band, consisting of a five-man brass section, drums, violin, hurdy-gurdy, accordion and three fantastic female vocalists, sways it audiences with a well-defined big-band sound, jazzy solos, and virtuoso arrangements in smaller line-ups. And above all this hover the "magic voices" (taz) and filigree harmonies of the three singers, one from Serbia, one from Bosnia and one from Kosovo, "each of whom adds her own particular touch, in terms of charisma and timbre: full of joie de vivre and soul, fragile and melancholic, elegant and erotic" (Badische Zeitung). The trail-blazing Balkan DJ Shantel (Bucovina Club/Electric Gypsyland) is wild about these new recordings: "Balkan Groove of the highest order, at the interface between East and West".

The flames of a new musical fire are spreading from the Caribbean coast of Columbia: Champeta criolla. The spark was ignited in the tiny village of Palenque, inhabited since the seventeenth century by Africans fleeing slavery, and their descendants. In Palenque, the traditional African rhythms and rituals survived unbroken, making the village a magnet that attracted not only lovers of music from the coastal regions. More recently, the advent of Cuban labourers brought Son Montuno to the region, while seamen from Africa introduced their old Highlife and Soukous records. A thrillingly revolutionary blend of styles was born. From its beginnings in the Black ghettos, Champeta has stormed throughout Columbia and beyond. The legendary percussionist and singer Batata is regarded as the King of Champeta. Exclusively for this major Network project, Batata and Lucas Silva invited to the studio the finest Cumbia musicians, brass players from the best bands, Highlife and Soukous guitarists, percussionists and the most talented of the animators who are such an important part of this music- that is an explosive burst of Creole Soukous, Columbian Highlife and tropical Afrobeat.

Since their WorldNetwork CD "Quejas de Bandonéon" (WorldNetwork 5: Argentina) which was awarded the German Phonographic Critics Prize, and their performance in the Broadway production "Tango Pasion", Sexteto Mayor have been world famous. Given their age - between them, the six musicians can add up 400 years - it is astonishing how much vivacity and unfettered joy they have poured into this journey through the history of tango and their own musical past. Hailed as the "best tango line-up in decades" (FR) to emerge from Buenos Aires, their latest CD is a virtuoso homage to the history of tango, from Gardel to Piazzolla. The tracks range from the early tango music of the bars and brothels to new arrangements from the 30s and culminates in exuberant compositions of their own and works by contemporary masters. As one critic noted, "Carlos Gardel would be delighted at the way his music continues to develop".(FR) Guest artist on a number of tracks is Adriana Varela, currently the top tango singer. With her smokey voice, her fiery temperament and her deep emotions, she is enthusiastically feted in Argentina. At the end of the recording session, she said, "Ever since I was a child, I have dreamt of recording with these titans of tango. It was great fun to discover just how they can bring these great moments of tango history alive with so much passion and feeling." Together, these artists "transport the vision of paradise regained in tango."
