Gheorghe Zamfir /'ge̯or.ge zamˈfir/ (born April 6, 1941, in Găeşti, Romania) is a musician who is a virtuoso of the pan flute. Originally wanting to become an accordionist, at 14 years of age he began his pan flute studies and was initially self-taught. He continued his education at the Bucharest Academy of Music where he was a pupil of Fanica Luca at the Conservatory of Bucharest (1968). He came to the public eye when he was "discovered" by Swiss ethnomusicologist Marcel Cellier who extensively researched Romanian folk music in the 1960s. Made from the finest Chinese bamboo, he expanded the traditional Romanian-style pan flute ("nai") of 20 pipes to 22, 25, 28 and 30 pipes to increase its range, obtaining as many as nine tones from each pipe by changing the embouchure. Entertainment career Zamfir was rumored to join the legendary power pop band Raspberries on their aborted 1976 tour.[citation needed] Throughout his 50-year-long career, Gheorghe Zamfir has won an overall 120 golden and platinum disc awards and sold over 120 million albums. Zamfir wrote an instructional book, "Traitė Du Naï Roumain: méthode de flûte de pan", Paris: Chappell S.A., 1975, ISBN 88-8291-286-8, and an autobiography "Binecuvântare şi blestem" ("Blessing & Curses)", Arad: Mirador, 2000, ISBN 973-9284-56-6. Zamfir currently resides and teaches panpipe in Bucharest, Romania (2006). Largely through the numerous television commercials for his many albums, he introduced the pan flute to a modern audience and revived it from obscurity. One of his most famous contributions was to the soundtrack for the classic Australian film Picnic at Hanging Rock. His music has also been heard on the soundtracks of many Hollywood movies. He was asked by Ennio Morricone to perform the pieces "Childhood Memories" and "Cockeye's Song" for the soundtrack of Sergio Leone's classic 1984 gangster film Once Upon A Time In America, his music is heard throughout the 1984 film The Karate Kid, and his song "The Lonely Shepherd" which was penned by James Last, and was recorded with the James Last Orchestra is featured in Quentin Tarantino's film Kill Bill Vol. 1 Cultural references This article contains a trivia section. Content in this section should be integrated into the body of the article or removed. * Late night talk show host Johnny Carson often mentioned Zamfir in his Tonight Show monologues. * In an episode of the animated television series King of the Hill, "Propane Boom", Hank Hill suggests Zamfir as a corporate spokesman for Strickland Propane, mentioning that he's sold more records than the Beatles and "his music's better too". * Zamfir was mentioned in two separate episodes of the television series Sports Night. In the episode "The Apology", Casey seeks advice as to what is or isn't "cool", and asks whether or not Zamfir is cool. In the episode "Kafelnikov", Casey uses Zamfir's name and status as "master of the pan flute" in a fake news story. * Zamfir once had a cameo on the Warner Bros. animated series Histeria!, in which he is one of a group of other historical musicians in a Dating Game-style show called "Duets". He is the only prospective bachelor that the bachelorette, Miss Information, is not interested in.

Gypsy Music of the Balkans

Gypsy Music of the Balkans - Langa, Sarr-e-Roma, Zoran Predin & Šukar…
Wild and fiery Balkan 7/8 rhythms as well as heart-rending ballads and everything in between! Played by some of the best-known Balkan Gypsy Bands.
Alt text
ARC has put out a series of gypsy recordings from throughout the expanses of Eastern Europe (and Western Europe as well, really). In and of itself then, this one shouldn't be much different than the plethora of albums on the market. However, this album of music from the Balkans provides a series of surprises, not holding to the stereotypical and traditional bands and their styles. Certainly there are hints of the fiery Eastern European groups and their ilk (Taraf de Haidouks, Fanfare Ciocarlia, etc), but the music here goes beyond that. The album opens with Sarajevo's Sarr-e-Roma and a song with a sultry, slinky vocal laid over the top of an ultra-high-tempo bounce and vocal accentuations that almost push it into the Eastern European dancehall form. A few songs later, Sarr-e-Roma returns with a deep and mournful piece of music almost in the realm of flamenco. Speaking of flamenco, Langa, from Northern Slovenia, plays some excellent romping music reminiscent of the "flamenco" from Southern France (as popularized by the Gipsy Kings). More relaxed and traditional pieces come from the likes of Vlatko Stefanovski and Ezerki (hailed in the Croatian press as the Macedonian analog of the Chieftains or the Buena Vista Social Club). Before the album is over, Sarr-e-Roma returns with some rock-influenced sounds, Langa commandeers a dulcimer for a more contemplative number, and the ebb and flow of energy between the contemporary iconoclasts and the somber clarinet of Vlatko repeats a couple of additional times. The album goes beyond what many would think of as traditional gypsy music, incorporating more modern sounds but also keeping an eye on those a little truer to the original forms (largely from Macedonia). For a quick and basic overview of Balkan gypsy music, this is really a fine choice. ~ Adam Greenberg, All Music Guide

The Rough Guide to 'Western Europe'

[01]. The Rough Guide to the Music of Italy

Alt text
From high in the Alps to the Calabrian coast, the traditional music of Italy is as varied as its landscape. This Rough Guide offers a glimpse of the country's rich musical heritage, from the mysterious sounding 'a tenore' singing style of Sardinia to the tarantellas of Naples in the south.

Artists include: Daniel Sepe, Tenores Di Bitti, Riccardo Tesi, La Macina, Banda Ionica, Cantovivo and Totore Chessa

Like the other entries in this almost uniformly excellent series, The Rough Guide to the Music of Italy presents a richly diverse introduction to its chosen subject, collecting forms of Italian music both traditional and contemporary, national and localized. Artists present include Banditaliana, Banda Ionica, Baraban, and Tenores Di Bitti. ~ Steve Huey, All Music Guide

[02]. Rough Guide to Italia Nova

Alt text
An interesting compilation of some very new trends in Italian music. The Italia Nova scene is one that combines traditional Italian music with contemporary electronica in some form. It's becoming something of a mainstay of the underground club scene. This trend can take two basic forms: traditional artists adding some electronic kick to their usual work to make it a bit more accessible, or electronica artists adding some bits of traditional music into their work in the constant expansion of samples that's the key to electronica. The album opens up with some horn-based town style, moves into a mix of eurodance and pizzica tarantala, and finishes the opening trio with saxophone master Daniele Sepe. As the album progresses, a good deal of ground is covered, usually with either a basic house beat or some drum and bass as the electronic aspect. The traditional aspects vary a bit from song to song, jumping from Sicilian to Neapolitan to more pizzica, but always keeping the same sort of reveling in the moment that's central to much of traditional Italian music. While all of the tracks have something worth hearing held within, perhaps the most representative of the pieces is a work from Tazenda incorporating an updated version of traditional polyphony along with accordion (and a tiny bit of George Clinton if you listen carefully). Give it a spin for a look at the new edge in the constantly evolving Italian club scene, and a way to catch some of the older traditions outside their usual element. ~ Adam Greenberg, All Music Guide

[03]. The Rough Guide To The Music Of France

Alt text
France has developed a strong musical scene over the last decade, one that treasures its past (evident in "La Bourée Des Capucins"), but also looks to a multi-cultural future, as evidenced by acts like Lo'Jo and Massilia Sound System. Inevitably, there's plenty of accordion -- just listen to Jo Privat & Didier Roussin or Les Orgres De Barback -- but not in the cheesy, sidewalk café sense. That bal musette music, so lovingly played by Les Primitifs du Futur (which includes cartoonist R. Crumb), has a lush, sensual quality that leads well into classic chanson from Edith Piaf or Léo Ferré. Gabriel Yacoub represents the Breton connection, where French and Celtic music meet. France is also home to some hot jazz and gypsy music, as typified by Romane and Angelo Debarre. The pipes are part of the French tradition and get an airing on the spicy "Cayenne," while the vocal past can be heard on "Deomp D'An Univet." Happily, the uncategorizable sound of Dédale is included -- and fitting end, since they're informed by French tradition, but intent on making something very new and challenging from the past. As an overview of French music, this is excellent. ~ Chris Nickson, All Music Guide

[04]. The Rough Guide to Paris Cafe Music

Alt text
The Rough Guide To Paris Café Music conjures up the romantic image of accordion music floating through wisps of smoke from a Gitane, the voice of Edith Piaf and a moonlit Eiffel Tower. This style of music is known as bal-musette and grew from the music of the immigrant communities in Paris at the turn of the last century. This unique and comprehensive collection traces the music from its lowly roots in the café-charbons to its modern incarnations in modern jazz and rock-musette with tracks from its seminal artists.

[05]. Rough Guide to the Music of Spain

Alt text
Subtitled "Infectious Beats From the Spanish Streets," this is a collection of newer, often younger artists, mostly acoustic performers, who are all of, and frequently working in, the traditional and regional styles of Spain. There's plenty of Andalusian influence here, right from Javier Ruibál's opening track into Javier Paxarino's Arabic-inflected "Amanecer el la Sabika," but that's hardly all. Galicia is represented by Anubía, while the wonderful Hiru Truku and "Neska Soldadua" raise the Basque flag. In between there's a very fair selection of what's going on in Spain, whether it's the flamenco of Diego Carrasco or the political Catalan song of María del Mar Bonet. At its heart, as the compilers note, a lot of this might be classified as pop music (though not in the more American sense), but still very rooted. Notably, some experimental performers, such as Mercedes Peon and those working in a straight folk form (like Susana Seivane), aren't here, but that's fine; this gives exposure to many lesser-known talents, all of whom deserve it. A strong look at a part of Spain that hasn't received enough international sun -- yet. ~ Chris Nickson, All Music Guide

[06]. The Rough Guide To The Music Of Portugal

Alt text
The popularity of Brazilian music in jazz and pop-jazz circles has inspired some artists who aren't from Portuguese-speaking countries to learn to sing in Portuguese. In fact, some American jazz singers (such as Susannah McCorkle) can actually sing convincingly in that language. Most of them have learned Portuguese as it's spoken in Brazil, but as this CD demonstrates, there's a whole other world of great Portuguese-language singing -- Portugal itself. The liner notes for The Rough Guide to the Music of Portugal describe Portuguese music as "one of the great and overlooked joys of European culture," and it's hard to argue with that after listening to this collection of mostly fado music (a style that has some similarity to the music of other Southern European countries like Italy and Spain). Containing mostly recordings from the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s, this compilation turns the spotlight on many of fado's important singers, including Amalia Rodrigues, Jose Afonso, Maria Da Fe, Jose Afonso, Teresa Silva Carvalho, Maria Teresa de Noronha, Vitorino and Dulce Pontes. Most of these songs are acoustic, emphasizing acoustic guitar, and have a traditional outlook, but Lendas & Mitos' "Barquinha Do Mar" provides an electric take on fado that incorporates both rock and Scottish/Celtic music. Lovers of Brazilian music will notice how different Portuguese and Brazilian singers are in their approach to the Portuguese language -- in fact, their accents and pronunciation are every bit as different as an American's English would be from that of a Londoner. If you've never experienced the joys of fado, this superb CD would be an excellent place to start. ~ Alex Henderson, All Music Guide

[07]. Rough Guide To The Music Of Greece

Alt text
This welcome addition to the Rough Guide catalog shines a light on a country whose music has largely been ignored internationally, and proves that, within the borders of Greece, the musical traditions are complex and marvelously rewarding. Thankfully it's not solely focused on modern-day artists, but frames them in the context of the past, with tracks by the legendary Kostas Nouros, "The Nightingale of Smyrna," and George Koros, the man responsible for really introducing the fiddle into Greek music (his "Ballos" is an aural treat). Inevitably, there's plenty of rembetika and laiko, those particularly indigenous Greek forms, but this stretches beyond that, to encompass the jazz-funk of Mode Pagal, whose "Pikrodafni" is rather insipid and uninspired, as well as several of the superb female Greek singers who've broken through in recent decades, like Eleftheria Arvanitaki, Glykeria, and Savina Yannatou, perhaps the most adventurous of them all. And no overview of Greek music would be complete without Mikis Theodorakis, best known for his theme to Zorba the Greek. Memorable as that was, his real writing has extended in so many directions, and "To Trizoni" offers just a small glimpse of one of his facets. With excellent liner notes and an enhanced CD that gives you all the information on Greece from The Rough Guide to World Music, it leaves you fully prepared to delve more deeply into music that deserves wider discovery. ~ Chris Nickson, All Music Guide

Tessa Souter - Listen Love

Posted By Olga On Sunday, November 25, 2007 1 comments
Tessa Souter - 2004 - Listen Love
Daughter of an English mother and Trinidadian father, Tessa sings jazz with the soul and passion of Flamenco and World music... Extraordinary authenticity. Musical sophistication. A must-see for lovers of world class jazz vocalizing. by Los Angeles Times
Born in London of Trinidadian and English parents, New York-based vocalist, composer, and lyricist Tessa Souter (soo-ter) infuses jazz with the soul and passion of flamenco, Indian and Middle Eastern music. There's no one doing what Tessa does," enthused Village Voice and New York Sun critic Will Friedwald. "One of the most imaginatively programmed vocal sets of recent memory." said the Los Angeles Times, in a rave review of her California debut at the Catalina Bar and Grill in 2002. And it's not just the critics who admire her. Soul jazz singer Jon Lucien said of Listen Love. "Magnificent! I couldn't stop playing it over and over. She blew me away!" Taught to sing at the age of three by her mother, Tessa took up the guitar at 12. She was encouraged in her early teens to pursue a singing career, but took a detour - early motherhood, university and journalism. In 1992, she moved to San Francisco, where she wrote for the British press, including Vogue, Elle, The Guardian and The Times, and became one of the original six members of The Writer's Grotto, along with Po Bronson (who cites her in his best seller What Should I Do With My Life), Ethan Canin, Ethan Watters, Josh Kornbluth and David Munro. After moving to New York in 1996, she started sitting in at jazz jams, before winning a scholarship to study at New York's Manhattan School of Music in 1998. She left to study privately with jazz vocal legend Mark Murphy. Since her professional debut in 1999 Tessa has performed with some of the world's jazz greats, including Mark Murphy, Joe La Barbera, Marvin Sewell, Larry Koonse, Latin Grammy nominee Bobby Sanabria and jazz tuba legend Howard Johnson. WNPK Radio FM says: "It's hard to believe she only recently became a vocalist, because she sings with the authority and passion that usually comes from long experience." To quote Los Angeles-based guitarist Larry Koonse, "Tessa Souter has all the qualities I value most in a musician: great time, beautiful phrasing, gorgeous sound, a respect for silence, an emotional connection to the moment, and a wonderful ability to tell a story. She is the 'real thing' in every way.

Hassan Kassai - Le Ney Iranien

Posted By MiOd On Tuesday, November 20, 2007 3 comments
Hassan Kassaï: Le Ney
Hassan Kassai: This important Iranian artist is also sometimes identified as Hassan Kassayi. He is one of the masters of the Persian ney, an extremely expressive reed instrument used in Iranian classical music. The music is derived from modal systems known as dastgah and is related to ancient Greek music. Performers are required to master many different scale patterns and harmonic combinations and to be able to improvise with them in a meaningful manner. Known sometimes just as "master Kassai," he is the instrumentalist younger players such as Hossein Omoumi look to for inspiration and is frequently referred to as the best ney player in history. He grew up in a home that appreciated music, and in fact his house was something of a popular rendezvous for musicians, such as vocalist Seyed Hosein Taherzadeh, tar player Akbar Khan Noroozi, vocalist Esmayil Addib Khansari, and the great ney player Aboihassan Sabba. The young boy developed a love of music from these surroundings and his father arranged his first studies with vocal teacher Taj Isfahani. In 1947, he began his ney studies with Mehdi Navai, a former student of Asdollah. This teacher died three years into what had been planned to be nearly a decade of study, but had told Kassai's father, "All that I acquired in 40 years, this youth learned from me in only three months." He studied further with Abolhassan Sabba, drinking in a rich broth of classical repertoire which has served as the wellspring of his gushing performing career exceeding half a century. Imbedded in his discography and history of performances is the actual radical growth of the repertoire for this instrument itself. He added many tunes that, prior to his mastery, would have been considered impossible by players of the instrument. A double CD with many of his groundbreaking recordings has been assembled and released by Mahour. He is featured on the Philips series Modal Music and Improvisations, sponsored by UNESCO. Kassai's best-known recording is his solo album for the French Playasound label. ~ Eugene Chadbourne, All Music Guide

Behdja Rahal, une voix raffinée...
Behdja Rahal, a fine voice ... Beihja Rahal comes from a middle artistic, but it is the only one to have made a career in music, a genre in particularly difficult and selective: Andalusian singing. In fact, the practice of this art requires both a great dexterity to handle the instrument-one it has chosen, kouitra, a former Algerian typically, is especially difficult to control and a voice-perfect. She continued her musical education with the great masters of the Arab-Classicism: The best known were Abderrezak Fakhardji, Mohamed Khaznadji and Zoubir Karkachi. The singer has completed a painstaking work, that to embark on the registration of twelve noubas remaining Andalusian heritage. Through this initiative for several reasons, she also wanted to prove that the female voice has emerged. A bet, a priori, succeeded because thanks to his professionalism and his determination, it remains today the singer Andalusian the most listened and most appreciated. It is surrounded by some musicologists and seasoned musicians for the recording of his nine noubas. This pure happiness for two hours was obtained Beihdja Rahal to his fans is only part remission since, in a few months, it will present the tenth nouba Raml Maya. In his concerts, at the earliest musical notes, the spirits escape in enjoying this beautiful music millennium. With his voice caressing and refined Beihdja Rahal made praises to the Creator and his prophets with emotion. Side orchestra, it abandoned the crowded orchestras in vogue in recent years and returned to training room that leave room for improvisation. Today, Andalusian music is no longer seen as an elitist music, the audience grows by the day. Beihdja Rahal underscores the growing popularity of this music with Algerian youth "nouba was commercial. Proof if any, the various solicitations I receive from my publisher. That means it is much in demand. " Another example of its popularity, Beihdja is often approached in the street by young people who recognize his talent.

Fernando Fernández Monje a.k.a. Terremoto de Jerez was born in Jerez de la Frontera (Cádix), in 1934 and died in this same city in 1981. He was a singer (cantaor), and dancer (bailaor) of Flamenco. He started his career as a dancer, and at that time he was called Terremoto (earthquake) because of his very percussive way to stamp on the ground. In the 1950s he launched his career as a singer and sang in the taverns of Jerez, Madrid and Barcelona. He died of a heart failure when he was 47 years old. He is regarded as one of most impressive flamenco singers of all times. He excelled in the profound vocal styles of tonas, seguiriyas, soleares, as well as fandangos and malaguenas, but his speciality were the bulerias. His powerful singing was characterized by a deep voice with gypsy accent. Together with Manuel Torre, Agujetas, La Piriñaca and others, he represents the tradition of "cante de Jerez", the vocal style of Jerez

Udi Hrant, Early Recordings, Vol. I&II, Traditional Crossroads

Posted By MiOd On Sunday, November 18, 2007 3 comments
Thanks to the original uploader! Udi Hrant Kenkulian The Early Recordings Vol. 1 Traditional Crossroads, 1995
Udi Hrant Kenkulian (1901–August 29, 1978), often referred to as Udi Hrant ("oud-player Hrant") or as Hrant Emre ("Hrant of the soul") was an oud player of Turkish classical music, and a key transitional figure in its transformation into a contemporary popular music. He was an ethnic Armenian citizen of Turkey who spent most of his life in Turkey and wrote most of his lyrics in Turkish. He went to the United States of America to have his blindness treated, and performed while in America. As an oud player, he was a major innovator, introducing left-hand pizzicato, bidirectional picking (the tradition had been to use the pick only on the downstroke), double stops, and novel tunings (sometimes using open tunings or tuning the paired strings in octaves instead of to a single note). According to Harold G. Hagopian, he was most respected for his improvisational taksim Born near Istanbul, declared blind four days after his birth, Hrant as a child sang in the choir of an Armenian Apostolic Church. His family fled to Konya in 1915 to escape the Armenian Genocide; there Hrant first studied the oud, with a teacher named Garabed. In 1918 the family returned west, first to Adapazarı and then to Istanbul, where Hrant continued his musical studies under some of the leading teachers of the time, including Kemani Agopos Ayvazyan, Dikran Katsakhian, and Udi Krikor Berberian. Somewhere along the way he also learned to speak French, and was actually accepted at age 16 to a Paris-based school for the blind, but he contracted typhoid fever and was unable to travel. Several attempts (including by doctors in Vienna) failed to restore his eyesight, which prevented him from playing in ensembles. He made a modest living playing in cafes, giving music lessons, and selling instruments. There is some question about when he first recorded; he claimed to have made a record as early as age 19, but his earliest known recordings would appear to be from no earlier than 1927, since they used an electronic microphone. In 1928, he fell in love with Ağavini, the sister of one of his students, but her parents would not let her marry a musician; they met again by accident in 1937 and married ten years later. In the meantime, he had written numerous songs about his desire for an absent love. He slowly, but steadily, gained more fame as a musician. Some of his Turkish recordings were released internationally as early as the 1930s, first on RCA Victor, and later on such labels as Balkan (New York), Perfectaphone and Yildiz (probably, according to Hagopian, a single company, address unknown), and Istanbul (Los Angeles). Composer Şeirf Içli introduced him to Kanuni Ismail Şençalar, in whose group he played for a while, leading to opportunities to perform on Ankara Radio. In 1950, a wealthy Greek American brought him to America for another (unsuccessful) attempt at restoring his eyesight. The trip, however, led to a series of concerts in New York City, Boston, Detroit, Los Angeles, and Fresno, California, playing both Turkish classical music and his own compositions. This tour apparently increased his prestige at home: he began to perform frequently on Istanbul Radio, first as a soloist and later with a chorus he formed. It also recorded in U.S. recording sessions for Smyrnaphon and Oriental Moods. The former, according to Hagopian, are marred by his being "paired… with inferior musicians". The latter were a deluxe set, believed to be the first ever inclusion of an oud with a violin and piano in a chamber music setting, issued in an elaborately packaged set with English language titles given to the songs. The recording included both Hrant's originals and classic songs by Kanuni Artaki, Bimen Şen, and others. During his trips to the U.S., he conducted master classes with young Armenian-American oud players such as Richard Hagopian, John Berberian, and Harry Minassian. His recordings for Balkan, (with Şükrü Tunar on clarinet, Ahmet Yatman on kanun and Ali Kocadine on drum, are notable for the fact that although they were recorded in Turkey, with a mix of Turkish and Armenian musicians, they include lyrics in Armenian; he also did other records with Turkish lyrics with the same line-up. His original songs written in Armenian include "Parov Yegar Siroon Yar," "Siroon Aghchig," "Anoosh Yaren Heratsa," "Khrjit," and "Srdis Vra Kar Me Ga." He toured internationally again in 1963, playing in Paris, Beirut, Greece, the United States, and Yerevan, then the capital of the Armenian Soviet Socialist Republic. He recorded again in the U.S. at this time, but according to Hagopian the recordings are "inferior… for small labels and record producers eager to capitalize on the 'belly-dance craze'". His last performance was in Istanbul in April 1978, at which time he was already suffering from the cancer that would kill him that August. Get this and Volume 2 and you are well on your way to a stunning collection of music to immerse yourself in. I don't have the self-titled collection yet. To the best of my knowledge it is an amateur recording made by a student of Hrant's during some oud lessons. I've just always felt iffy as to whether or not that would be interesting. In the end, I am sure I will buy it, but I just haven't yet. If you stumbled upon this disc, you should buy it.

UDI HRANT- MASTER OF THE OUD Udi Hrant Kenkulian, the blind master of the oud, is regarded as one of the greatest innovators of modern oud playing, and one of the most unique singers of this genre. Born in 1901 near Istanbul, Hrant was declared blind four days after birth. Despite frequent treatments, his condition did not improve. He survived the Armenian massacres of 1915, and in 1918 settled in Istanbul. There he studied with famous teachers including Kemani Agopos Ayvazyan, Dickran Katsakhian, and Udi Krikor Berberian. Istanbul attracted so many top musicians that it was difficult for Hrant to find employment. And because Hrant was blind, no ensembles would accept him as a member. Consequently, he often played alone in cafes for little money. To supplement his income, he sold musical instruments. During the hard times, Hrant never gave up hope to have his eyesight restored, even traveling to Vienna for treatment. Unable to attract the attention of famous groups, Hrant's career seemed stagnant until he was noticed, while playing at the Yenikauh Café, by the famous musician and composer, Serif Icli. He was introduced by a mutual friend, Kanuni Ismail Sencalar, and soon after, Hrant was invited to play with their group. The exposure led to concerts on Ankara Radio. The year 1950 marked a major turning point in Hrant’s life. A wealthy Greek-American, moved by Hrant’s talent, invited Hrant to the United States to see eye specialists. Unfortunately, doctors in New York were unable to correct Hrant’s condition and, ultimately, Hrant would remain blind for life. Meanwhile, friends approached Hrant about playing in the United States. At first he was reluctant. His main concern was that middle-eastern music be presented to American audiences in the same concert format as European classical music. He felt that Americans regarded middle-eastern music as inferior to western music. With the understanding that concerts would be presented according to his ideals, Hrant agreed to perform. His friends, Hrant Nishanian, Melkon Ohanesian, Hovaness Chalikian, Manoog Boyajian and Peprouhi Asvarian, formed the Association of Putania which sponsored a series of concerts in New York, Boston, Detroit, Los Angeles and Fresno. The repertoire consisted mostly of classical pieces of Ottomon composers; however, his improvisations (taksims) and original compositions were the tour de force for those who attended. Hrant returned to Turkey, and became known as a soloist frequently performing on Istanbul Radio, and later devoted much of his time teaching young oudists and singers. A special concert was arranged to take place in Yerevan in 1963, wherein Armenians in the homeland would hear Hrant for the first time. After the concert, the next day’s headlines read, "He came from Istanbul and conquered the Motherland where people received him with warmth. The sixty-five year old blind master sees with his heart and sings with his heart". Udi Hrant died August 29 1978, and is buried at the Armenian cemetery in Sisli, Istanbul. He had the title "Udi" which denotes him as Master of the Oud". His oud playing and singing will live forever!

India is the homeland for more than 40 million "tribals" -- aboriginals or indigenous peoples -- whose ancestors lived there before the Aryans arrived in approximately 1500 B.C. Many of these people live in the more inhospitable forests and mountain regions, or work as hunters or farmers; some have become "outcast" Hindus. There are about four or five million Gond who speak an unwritten Dravidian language, and this recording is primarily of the Gond who live in Bastar, the southernmost district of Madhya Pradesh. Many of their villages show characteristics of megalithic civilization, with menhir grave monuments and enormous stone slabs that serve as roofs and fences. There is a wide variety of songs presented here: a drumming "Rain Dance"; the fascinating "L'Escorte de la Mariée" ("Bridal Escort") for antiphonal chorus of friends and family wishing her farewell as she makes a strange noise like weeping; the joyous "Pani Mali Gala Jai" ("The Rainshowers Pour Down"); and a heartfelt "Ode to Bastar" sung in elegant Halbi by a famous poet met on a deserted mountain road on the hottest day of the year. ~ "Blue" Gene Tyranny

this cd, which is a co-production with the berlin ethnological museum, is a sample of the larger mantle hood collection of 164 reel-to-reel tapes representing more than 80 hours of music and improvisations of principal javanese gamelan musicians in yogya, solo and bandung in the 1950s. the recordings capture improvisation rooted in a truly javanese traditional rote system of learning during a pivotal era before the widespread influence of western-modelled conservatory pedagogy all pieces of this cd - recorded in 1957 and 1958 - are first releases.
