Gheorghe Zamfir - Intemporel

Gheorghe Zamfir - Gold Greatest Hits [Best of] Gheorghe Zamfir - The Very Best of Gheorghe Zamfir Gheorghe Zamfir - Greatest Hits Gheorghe Zamfir - Selection of Zamfir [Best of] Gheorghe Zamfir - Music From The Movies Gheorghe Zamfir - La Magia Del Flauto Di Pan Gheorghe Zamfir - The Feeling Of Christmas Gheorghe Zamfir - The Beautiful Sound Of The Pan Pipes Gheorghe Zamfir - The Lonely Shepherd Gheorghe Zamfir - The Feeling Of Romance Gheorghe Zamfir & Dana Dragomir - Panflojts Favoriter Gheorghe Zamfir & James Last - Lonely Shepherd [Vid]

Gheorghe Zamfir /'ge̯or.ge zamˈfir/ (born April 6, 1941, in Găeşti, Romania) is a musician who is a virtuoso of the pan flute. Originally wanting to become an accordionist, at 14 years of age he began his pan flute studies and was initially self-taught. He continued his education at the Bucharest Academy of Music where he was a pupil of Fanica Luca at the Conservatory of Bucharest (1968). He came to the public eye when he was "discovered" by Swiss ethnomusicologist Marcel Cellier who extensively researched Romanian folk music in the 1960s. Made from the finest Chinese bamboo, he expanded the traditional Romanian-style pan flute ("nai") of 20 pipes to 22, 25, 28 and 30 pipes to increase its range, obtaining as many as nine tones from each pipe by changing the embouchure. Entertainment career Zamfir was rumored to join the legendary power pop band Raspberries on their aborted 1976 tour.[citation needed] Throughout his 50-year-long career, Gheorghe Zamfir has won an overall 120 golden and platinum disc awards and sold over 120 million albums. Zamfir wrote an instructional book, "Traitė Du Naï Roumain: méthode de flûte de pan", Paris: Chappell S.A., 1975, ISBN 88-8291-286-8, and an autobiography "Binecuvântare şi blestem" ("Blessing & Curses)", Arad: Mirador, 2000, ISBN 973-9284-56-6. Zamfir currently resides and teaches panpipe in Bucharest, Romania (2006). Largely through the numerous television commercials for his many albums, he introduced the pan flute to a modern audience and revived it from obscurity. One of his most famous contributions was to the soundtrack for the classic Australian film Picnic at Hanging Rock. His music has also been heard on the soundtracks of many Hollywood movies. He was asked by Ennio Morricone to perform the pieces "Childhood Memories" and "Cockeye's Song" for the soundtrack of Sergio Leone's classic 1984 gangster film Once Upon A Time In America, his music is heard throughout the 1984 film The Karate Kid, and his song "The Lonely Shepherd" which was penned by James Last, and was recorded with the James Last Orchestra is featured in Quentin Tarantino's film Kill Bill Vol. 1 Cultural references This article contains a trivia section. Content in this section should be integrated into the body of the article or removed. * Late night talk show host Johnny Carson often mentioned Zamfir in his Tonight Show monologues. * In an episode of the animated television series King of the Hill, "Propane Boom", Hank Hill suggests Zamfir as a corporate spokesman for Strickland Propane, mentioning that he's sold more records than the Beatles and "his music's better too". * Zamfir was mentioned in two separate episodes of the television series Sports Night. In the episode "The Apology", Casey seeks advice as to what is or isn't "cool", and asks whether or not Zamfir is cool. In the episode "Kafelnikov", Casey uses Zamfir's name and status as "master of the pan flute" in a fake news story. * Zamfir once had a cameo on the Warner Bros. animated series Histeria!, in which he is one of a group of other historical musicians in a Dating Game-style show called "Duets". He is the only prospective bachelor that the bachelorette, Miss Information, is not interested in.

Tessa Souter - Listen Love

Tessa Souter - 2004 - Listen Love

Daughter of an English mother and Trinidadian father, Tessa sings jazz with the soul and passion of Flamenco and World music... Extraordinary authenticity. Musical sophistication. A must-see for lovers of world class jazz vocalizing. by Los Angeles Times
Born in London of Trinidadian and English parents, New York-based vocalist, composer, and lyricist Tessa Souter (soo-ter) infuses jazz with the soul and passion of flamenco, Indian and Middle Eastern music. There's no one doing what Tessa does," enthused Village Voice and New York Sun critic Will Friedwald. "One of the most imaginatively programmed vocal sets of recent memory." said the Los Angeles Times, in a rave review of her California debut at the Catalina Bar and Grill in 2002. And it's not just the critics who admire her. Soul jazz singer Jon Lucien said of Listen Love. "Magnificent! I couldn't stop playing it over and over. She blew me away!" Taught to sing at the age of three by her mother, Tessa took up the guitar at 12. She was encouraged in her early teens to pursue a singing career, but took a detour - early motherhood, university and journalism. In 1992, she moved to San Francisco, where she wrote for the British press, including Vogue, Elle, The Guardian and The Times, and became one of the original six members of The Writer's Grotto, along with Po Bronson (who cites her in his best seller What Should I Do With My Life), Ethan Canin, Ethan Watters, Josh Kornbluth and David Munro. After moving to New York in 1996, she started sitting in at jazz jams, before winning a scholarship to study at New York's Manhattan School of Music in 1998. She left to study privately with jazz vocal legend Mark Murphy. Since her professional debut in 1999 Tessa has performed with some of the world's jazz greats, including Mark Murphy, Joe La Barbera, Marvin Sewell, Larry Koonse, Latin Grammy nominee Bobby Sanabria and jazz tuba legend Howard Johnson. WNPK Radio FM says: "It's hard to believe she only recently became a vocalist, because she sings with the authority and passion that usually comes from long experience." To quote Los Angeles-based guitarist Larry Koonse, "Tessa Souter has all the qualities I value most in a musician: great time, beautiful phrasing, gorgeous sound, a respect for silence, an emotional connection to the moment, and a wonderful ability to tell a story. She is the 'real thing' in every way.

Hassan Kassai - Le Ney Iranien

Hassan Kassaï: Le Ney

Hassan Kassai: This important Iranian artist is also sometimes identified as Hassan Kassayi. He is one of the masters of the Persian ney, an extremely expressive reed instrument used in Iranian classical music. The music is derived from modal systems known as dastgah and is related to ancient Greek music. Performers are required to master many different scale patterns and harmonic combinations and to be able to improvise with them in a meaningful manner. Known sometimes just as "master Kassai," he is the instrumentalist younger players such as Hossein Omoumi look to for inspiration and is frequently referred to as the best ney player in history. He grew up in a home that appreciated music, and in fact his house was something of a popular rendezvous for musicians, such as vocalist Seyed Hosein Taherzadeh, tar player Akbar Khan Noroozi, vocalist Esmayil Addib Khansari, and the great ney player Aboihassan Sabba. The young boy developed a love of music from these surroundings and his father arranged his first studies with vocal teacher Taj Isfahani. In 1947, he began his ney studies with Mehdi Navai, a former student of Asdollah. This teacher died three years into what had been planned to be nearly a decade of study, but had told Kassai's father, "All that I acquired in 40 years, this youth learned from me in only three months." He studied further with Abolhassan Sabba, drinking in a rich broth of classical repertoire which has served as the wellspring of his gushing performing career exceeding half a century. Imbedded in his discography and history of performances is the actual radical growth of the repertoire for this instrument itself. He added many tunes that, prior to his mastery, would have been considered impossible by players of the instrument. A double CD with many of his groundbreaking recordings has been assembled and released by Mahour. He is featured on the Philips series Modal Music and Improvisations, sponsored by UNESCO. Kassai's best-known recording is his solo album for the French Playasound label. ~ Eugene Chadbourne, All Music Guide

Udi Hrant, Early Recordings, Vol. I&II, Traditional Crossroads

Thanks to the original uploader! Udi Hrant Kenkulian The Early Recordings Vol. 1 Traditional Crossroads, 1995

Udi Hrant Kenkulian (1901–August 29, 1978), often referred to as Udi Hrant ("oud-player Hrant") or as Hrant Emre ("Hrant of the soul") was an oud player of Turkish classical music, and a key transitional figure in its transformation into a contemporary popular music. He was an ethnic Armenian citizen of Turkey who spent most of his life in Turkey and wrote most of his lyrics in Turkish. He went to the United States of America to have his blindness treated, and performed while in America. As an oud player, he was a major innovator, introducing left-hand pizzicato, bidirectional picking (the tradition had been to use the pick only on the downstroke), double stops, and novel tunings (sometimes using open tunings or tuning the paired strings in octaves instead of to a single note). According to Harold G. Hagopian, he was most respected for his improvisational taksim Born near Istanbul, declared blind four days after his birth, Hrant as a child sang in the choir of an Armenian Apostolic Church. His family fled to Konya in 1915 to escape the Armenian Genocide; there Hrant first studied the oud, with a teacher named Garabed. In 1918 the family returned west, first to Adapazarı and then to Istanbul, where Hrant continued his musical studies under some of the leading teachers of the time, including Kemani Agopos Ayvazyan, Dikran Katsakhian, and Udi Krikor Berberian. Somewhere along the way he also learned to speak French, and was actually accepted at age 16 to a Paris-based school for the blind, but he contracted typhoid fever and was unable to travel. Several attempts (including by doctors in Vienna) failed to restore his eyesight, which prevented him from playing in ensembles. He made a modest living playing in cafes, giving music lessons, and selling instruments. There is some question about when he first recorded; he claimed to have made a record as early as age 19, but his earliest known recordings would appear to be from no earlier than 1927, since they used an electronic microphone. In 1928, he fell in love with Ağavini, the sister of one of his students, but her parents would not let her marry a musician; they met again by accident in 1937 and married ten years later. In the meantime, he had written numerous songs about his desire for an absent love. He slowly, but steadily, gained more fame as a musician. Some of his Turkish recordings were released internationally as early as the 1930s, first on RCA Victor, and later on such labels as Balkan (New York), Perfectaphone and Yildiz (probably, according to Hagopian, a single company, address unknown), and Istanbul (Los Angeles). Composer Şeirf Içli introduced him to Kanuni Ismail Şençalar, in whose group he played for a while, leading to opportunities to perform on Ankara Radio. In 1950, a wealthy Greek American brought him to America for another (unsuccessful) attempt at restoring his eyesight. The trip, however, led to a series of concerts in New York City, Boston, Detroit, Los Angeles, and Fresno, California, playing both Turkish classical music and his own compositions. This tour apparently increased his prestige at home: he began to perform frequently on Istanbul Radio, first as a soloist and later with a chorus he formed. It also recorded in U.S. recording sessions for Smyrnaphon and Oriental Moods. The former, according to Hagopian, are marred by his being "paired… with inferior musicians". The latter were a deluxe set, believed to be the first ever inclusion of an oud with a violin and piano in a chamber music setting, issued in an elaborately packaged set with English language titles given to the songs. The recording included both Hrant's originals and classic songs by Kanuni Artaki, Bimen Şen, and others. During his trips to the U.S., he conducted master classes with young Armenian-American oud players such as Richard Hagopian, John Berberian, and Harry Minassian. His recordings for Balkan, (with Şükrü Tunar on clarinet, Ahmet Yatman on kanun and Ali Kocadine on drum, are notable for the fact that although they were recorded in Turkey, with a mix of Turkish and Armenian musicians, they include lyrics in Armenian; he also did other records with Turkish lyrics with the same line-up. His original songs written in Armenian include "Parov Yegar Siroon Yar," "Siroon Aghchig," "Anoosh Yaren Heratsa," "Khrjit," and "Srdis Vra Kar Me Ga." He toured internationally again in 1963, playing in Paris, Beirut, Greece, the United States, and Yerevan, then the capital of the Armenian Soviet Socialist Republic. He recorded again in the U.S. at this time, but according to Hagopian the recordings are "inferior… for small labels and record producers eager to capitalize on the 'belly-dance craze'". His last performance was in Istanbul in April 1978, at which time he was already suffering from the cancer that would kill him that August. Get this and Volume 2 and you are well on your way to a stunning collection of music to immerse yourself in. I don't have the self-titled collection yet. To the best of my knowledge it is an amateur recording made by a student of Hrant's during some oud lessons. I've just always felt iffy as to whether or not that would be interesting. In the end, I am sure I will buy it, but I just haven't yet. If you stumbled upon this disc, you should buy it.

UDI HRANT- MASTER OF THE OUD Udi Hrant Kenkulian, the blind master of the oud, is regarded as one of the greatest innovators of modern oud playing, and one of the most unique singers of this genre. Born in 1901 near Istanbul, Hrant was declared blind four days after birth. Despite frequent treatments, his condition did not improve. He survived the Armenian massacres of 1915, and in 1918 settled in Istanbul. There he studied with famous teachers including Kemani Agopos Ayvazyan, Dickran Katsakhian, and Udi Krikor Berberian. Istanbul attracted so many top musicians that it was difficult for Hrant to find employment. And because Hrant was blind, no ensembles would accept him as a member. Consequently, he often played alone in cafes for little money. To supplement his income, he sold musical instruments. During the hard times, Hrant never gave up hope to have his eyesight restored, even traveling to Vienna for treatment. Unable to attract the attention of famous groups, Hrant's career seemed stagnant until he was noticed, while playing at the Yenikauh Café, by the famous musician and composer, Serif Icli. He was introduced by a mutual friend, Kanuni Ismail Sencalar, and soon after, Hrant was invited to play with their group. The exposure led to concerts on Ankara Radio. The year 1950 marked a major turning point in Hrant’s life. A wealthy Greek-American, moved by Hrant’s talent, invited Hrant to the United States to see eye specialists. Unfortunately, doctors in New York were unable to correct Hrant’s condition and, ultimately, Hrant would remain blind for life. Meanwhile, friends approached Hrant about playing in the United States. At first he was reluctant. His main concern was that middle-eastern music be presented to American audiences in the same concert format as European classical music. He felt that Americans regarded middle-eastern music as inferior to western music. With the understanding that concerts would be presented according to his ideals, Hrant agreed to perform. His friends, Hrant Nishanian, Melkon Ohanesian, Hovaness Chalikian, Manoog Boyajian and Peprouhi Asvarian, formed the Association of Putania which sponsored a series of concerts in New York, Boston, Detroit, Los Angeles and Fresno. The repertoire consisted mostly of classical pieces of Ottomon composers; however, his improvisations (taksims) and original compositions were the tour de force for those who attended. Hrant returned to Turkey, and became known as a soloist frequently performing on Istanbul Radio, and later devoted much of his time teaching young oudists and singers. A special concert was arranged to take place in Yerevan in 1963, wherein Armenians in the homeland would hear Hrant for the first time. After the concert, the next day’s headlines read, "He came from Istanbul and conquered the Motherland where people received him with warmth. The sixty-five year old blind master sees with his heart and sings with his heart". Udi Hrant died August 29 1978, and is buried at the Armenian cemetery in Sisli, Istanbul. He had the title "Udi" which denotes him as Master of the Oud". His oud playing and singing will live forever!

Inde Centrale - Traditions musicales des Gond

Credits to AmbroseBierce (Ripper & Uploader) Inde Centrale - Traditions musicales des Gond VDE-Gallo VDE CD-618, 1990

India is the homeland for more than 40 million "tribals" -- aboriginals or indigenous peoples -- whose ancestors lived there before the Aryans arrived in approximately 1500 B.C. Many of these people live in the more inhospitable forests and mountain regions, or work as hunters or farmers; some have become "outcast" Hindus. There are about four or five million Gond who speak an unwritten Dravidian language, and this recording is primarily of the Gond who live in Bastar, the southernmost district of Madhya Pradesh. Many of their villages show characteristics of megalithic civilization, with menhir grave monuments and enormous stone slabs that serve as roofs and fences. There is a wide variety of songs presented here: a drumming "Rain Dance"; the fascinating "L'Escorte de la Mariée" ("Bridal Escort") for antiphonal chorus of friends and family wishing her farewell as she makes a strange noise like weeping; the joyous "Pani Mali Gala Jai" ("The Rainshowers Pour Down"); and a heartfelt "Ode to Bastar" sung in elegant Halbi by a famous poet met on a deserted mountain road on the hottest day of the year. ~ "Blue" Gene Tyranny

Stimmhorn - Inland

Credits to AmbroseBierce (Ripper & Uploader) Stimmhorn Inland Make Up Your World/EFA CD 05177-2, 2001

stimmhorn, the musical duo from Basle, specialise in a quite unique form of artistic expression based on the delicate balance between the human voice and archaic wind instruments. The contrasting sounds of the song of the alpenhorn, a-semantic singing, rich harmonies, fascinating overtones and silence are brought together onto the stage in a playful atmosphere characterised by its theatrics, humour and sensitivity. Past and present meet on a quest for something new to create previously unheard musical seismograms imbued with originality. stimmhorn’s mythical musical style tells of the hidden depths of the human body and ancient and undisturbed landscapes. Throughout this artistic exploration of both external and internal spheres of resonance, the unbridled human voice meets the hazy tone sculptures of the horn and the phenomenal heights of overtone singing meet the incredible depths of the alpenhorn. This album allows us to participate in the creation and performance of a whole series of works of art that continuously play on the effects of the different dimensions of space. On stage, these original stimmhorn acoustic compositions take on a visual aspect and are represented in a simple but accurate style. Using symbolic and actionistic elements, the spectator is drawn into the world of the two performers and through their musical dialogue makes new discoveries of outer and inner worlds, looks in on imaginary spheres of forgotten sensitivities and unimaginable histories from the tangible mysteries of the topos and the corpus. Inland is the title of the new musical production by artists Christian Zehnder and Balthasar Streiff, in which they extend yet further their own, unconventional universe of sounds, originally created in previous projects. But in this album they also present us with brand new flotsam and jetsam picked up along the shores of the human imagination. IN LAND - The Film Film producer Pierre-Yves Brogeaud and the SF DRS (Music & Dance) have worked together on this first musical production about the Basle-based duet stimmhorn. It captures, above all, their unique expressive style. The film has neither dialogue nor commentary and both the music and pictures form an integral part of the overall composition. This marriage of image and sound presents the creation and development of stimmhorn’s music to us in a highly tangible manner. The duet composed several pieces specially for this production. The film medium also had a decisive influence on the theme adopted for the production of the inland album. The film delves into both the macro and microcosms of the visual world to represent the correlations that exist between stimmhorn’s music and a host of both inner and outer landscapes. From the expanses of space to the tiniest molecular structures, from dialogues of sound to acoustic voyages of discovery via archetypal musical instruments, from the human body to the human voice, inland the film creates links between both contrasting and coherent worlds, exposing the most emotional moments in the birth of the duet. The film’s first showing will take place at the Alpentöne Festival to be held in Altdorf in August 2001. No date has as yet been fixed for a television screening. EchoOrte, the composition commissioned by Pro Helvetia, also features in inland the film. stimmhorn stimmhorn made their first public appearance five years ago and very quickly gained international renown with their unique musical offering. Two successful albums, melken and schnee, soon followed and are now regularly taken to the stage. The duet have performed their work on several occasions both within Switzerland and abroad, adding to their repertoire several commissioned compositions. The Salzburger Festspiele, for example, called upon the talents of the duet to create stage music to accompany the Shakespeare play Troilus and Cressida (Director: Stefan Bachmann) and even requested that they assist in the stage management for the piece. Following this, the duet came up with their original creation Verlust der Stille for a production by the Basle Theatre which also involved performances by actors from within the company. Next came tours in Europe, Japan and even South Africa. stimmhorn is currently planning a joint project with ARTE involving a concert performed together with the Mongolian overtone group Huun-Huur-Tu. 1996 melken, images through sound (artistic guidance: Daniel Prieto) 1997 schnee, music for the stage (artistic guidance: Daniel Prieto) Swiss Stage Art Prize 1997 Concert, a combination of melken and schnee, EchoOrte, composition commissioned by Pro Helvetia 1998 Troilus and Cressida by W. S. Shakespeare, Director: Stefan Bachmann.Composition commissioned for the Salzburger Festspiele 1998.AZ-Stern des Jahres. The Münchner Abendzeitung newspaper awarded stimmhorn a ‘Star of the Year’ for its outstanding musical performance of melken in Munich in 1997. 1999 Verlust der Stille. Own composition for the Basle Theatre (play).Music: stimmhorn, Director: Christian Zehnder. CHRISTIAN ZEHNDER Voice, overtone singing, small bandoneon, accordion, bandora & related instruments Born in Zurich in 1961. Lives and works in Basle. After breaking off his guitar studies, Christian Zehnder began lessons with baritone signer Raphael Laback and overtone singing lessons with Tokne Nonaka (J). He then went on to further train his voice with Alfred Wolfson and Daniel Prieto. He has been involved in a variety of projects as a theatrical musician as well as in dance and music cabaret shows. He has undertaken solo performances, taken part in sound sculptures and has completed several compositions for the film industry. He worked together with music and sound designer Kold on the recent poppel music project that lies midway between electronic and archaic sounds (CD & Performance). He is currently preparing a solo project entitled Genom at the Gorki Theater Berlin, which is to be staged for the first time in the Autumn of 2001 under musical director Lavinia Frey.. BALTHASAR STREIFF Various alpenhorns, buchel, tuba, trumpet & related instruments Born in Baden in 1963. Lives and works in Basle. Balthasar Streiff trained at the in trumpet and voice, going on to study art at the Basle Higher Education Institute for the Creative Arts. Since then he has concentrated essentially on the alpenhorn and its value as a cult instrument. He has produced a variety of constructions of his own, often closely observing the rules of historical instrument making. He has been involved in diverse projects in the spheres of new music, the creative arts, theatre, film and literature. In May of 2001 he released the production sanshi/Purpurberg which he worked on together with Ueli Fuyûru Derendinger and which is a musical dialogue between Streiff’s horns and classical Japanese chamber music (Shakuhachi).

Ghazals afghans - Secular and sacred poems of love

Credits to AmbroseBierce (Ripper & Uploader) Farida Mahwash Ghazals afghans. Poèmes d'amour séculiers et sacrés / Secular and sacred poems of love Accords Croises AC 118, 2007

‘Art’ says Ustad Farida Mahwash, ‘is about affection and kindness.’ Ghazals afghans : secular and sacred poems of love is her new album. For most of her 61 years Mahwash has been Afghanistan’s best-loved singer. Its only female Ustad (‘master musician’) has lived in exile since 1991. The Californian resident is still a superb singer, determined to make the world ‘know that Afghanistan has been through 25 years of war, but still we didn’t lose our culture’. Her new album’s sitarist/arranger and harmonium player is a Melbourne-resident Ustad from Afghanistan - Khalil Gudaz.
The legendary queen of ornamentation displays a rainbow of the most refined tone colours to express feelings of love. After the album “Radio Kaboul”, a homage to the disappeared or exiled compositors and musicians of the radio of Afghanistan, Mahwash declines today the refined and complex forms of the feeling of love through the “ghazal”, privileged poetic frame of the human or devotional love. Infinite arabesques of sense, metaphors, oscillations from oriental modes to Indian ragas, permanent sliding from the profane to the sacred... “It’s the game around the ambiguity of this love what distinguishes the great musicians. Their role is to make people hear the hidden sense of the verses” said Ustad Mahwash. Characteristic of the Muslim presence in South Asia and sound personification of the ambiguity, the ghazal is the place of the indirect discourse and of the collective imaginary of the Indo-Muslim society, to which Afghanistan is connected. Mahwash is a legend in Afghanistan. She receives there the title of Ustad (master) in 1977. She leaves her country and goes to California, after the tragic events we all know. In the United States or in Europe, an enthusiastic public appreciates her voice with a slightly husky timber, but she refuses to return to Afghanistan to sing as long as the situation of women keeps them away from the musical world. An exceptional woman, she explains in the interview with Martina Catella the singularity of her situation: “In Afghanistan, we had many artists who sang mostly to divert. From the beginning, I decided to sing music that evokes noble feelings. Even in those days no woman frequented Kharabat, the musicians’ quarter. Women didn’t work. Society didn’t permit that. Thus, going to Kharabat or singing on the radio...you can imagine ! Their families forbade them to do that... I took that risk. I went to Kharabat with my husband to learn the rules of music. I am the first woman that followed this path. I learned the true Afghan music and the musical theory in a professional manner. Kharabat is our faculty of music. It is there where this art is transmitted in a professional manner from generation to generation...” (see the remainder in the booklet). An essential album of poetry and history, together with a booklet full of texts of the expert in the subject, Martina Catella, and with the direct words of the artist with a strong temper.

Syrian Band - Hewar

HEWAR - Arabic Jazz

Bringing together an amazingly fresh and diverse musical palate and influences, and drawing from an array of musical traditions-namely Arabic, Jazz, Scat, Opera and Classical music; is what makes it a truly unique venture. The band HEWAR (Dialogue in English) building on the acclaimed individual talents of each of its members, juxtaposes and meshes these musical styles to create a truly one-of-a-kind genre-breaking music. The musician-personality-rather than instruments-driven approach, justifies Hewar's ostensibly strange and eclectic line-up comprising Clarinet, Oud (or Arabic lute), Soprano, DoubleBass, Drums and Oriental and African Percussion, emphasizes the ability of music to express a wide scope of human emotions in a universal, easily-accessible vernacular. This makes for a distinctively unique sound, a sound that allows for an open-ended dialogue between Arabic music, jazz and western classical melodies-a conscious decision by the band's members.

Raúl Midón - A World Within A World

Raúl Midón - 2007 - A World Within A World

Raul Midón is known for creating his own unique musical world where soul, pop and latin music converge, and his "percussive guitar syncopations and supple, high-flying tenor" (NY Times) run free.'A World Within A World' features ten new songs, all written or co-written by Midón. Midón announces his new intentions within the first few bars of the album opener "Pick Somebody Up," adding clipped strings, electric piano, and hip-hop breaks to his signature style. The result is his catchiest song to date. Elsewhere Midón adds electric guitar, drums, woodwinds and myriad latin percussion instruments to the mix. And yet, he takes the Opposite approach on the long-time audience favorite "Ain't Happened Yet," a winking look at the starving artist's life, which he strips down to an a capella rant. The title 'World Within A World' comes from a line in "Tembererana," and the song is one of the album's centerpieces. Employing indigenous Argentinian rhythms and instruments (Midón's father was an acclaimed dancer from Argentina) such as the flute-like Quena, and Bombo and charango guitar/lute, Midón conjures a musical world within the song as rich as the one in his dreams. Blind from birth, Midón nonetheless had vivid dreams as a child, and "Tembererana" is a name he gave to a group of mysterious figures who would appear to him in his sleep.

Kudsi Erguner Ensemble - Taj Mahal

Kudsi Erguner - L' Orient de l'Occident Flamenco & Ottoman Sufi Music

Kudsi Erguner, one of the foremost ney masters of our times, is particularly famed for his activities helping to introduce Ottoman and Sufi music to the world with internationally acclaimed projects and recordings. He has also researched the music of India and Pakistan, grounded diverse music ensembles and recorded numerous albums. Being a major part of his contribution to World Music, “Taj Mahal” is amongst the most valuable pieces of his recordings. Inspired by Indian musicians (Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, Bismillah Khan, Mahalingham, Ramani, Subramanyam, Panal al Gosh, Vilayat Khan) and readings of Nizameddin Evliya and Muiniddin Chishti poems during visits to India, Erguner collaborated with worldwide musicians (Sultan Khan, Renaud Garcia-Fons, Ken Zukerman, Fazal Qureshi, Bruno Caillat) and brought Turkish and Indian music, which are far away from each other but sharing the same historical and cultural values, together within the framework of a concert. “Taj Mahal” contains records of this special concert given in Hagia Eirene Museum in 1999 for the Istanbul International Music Festival. All tracks written by Kudsi Erguner except “Çargah-Bhairava”, “Ya Rasoul” and “Sherif” arrangements of anonymous tunes. “Taj Mahal” is published as the first album of a special series named MAKAM in which Kudsi Erguner’s recordings are collected by the Turkish label Equinox Music & Entertainment.
Kudsi Erguner, born in the fifties in Istanbul, is considered a master of traditional Mevlevi Sufi and is one of the best-known players of the Turkish ney flute. For several years this musician, who now lives in Paris, has successfully opened up his country's classical music to the ideas of jazz. Kudsi Erguner comes from a family of Turkish musicians rich in tradition. From generation to generation they have passed on the art of playing the ney flute since the 17th century. As a boy Kudsi and his father Ulvi Erguner performed hypnotic and spiritual dance rituals from the Mevlevi-Sufi tradition at Dervish ceremonies. For several decades now, he has researched into the earliest roots of Ottoman music which he has also taught, performed and recorded. In the seventies Kudsi Erguner moved to Paris where, at the beginning of the eighties, he founded the 'Mevlana' Institute devoted to the study and teaching of classical Sufi music. Together with the 'Kudsi Erguner-Ensemble' he developed deep insights into the diversity of his culture: the group conveys both authentic, often improvised forms of expression of classical Ottoman performance culture as well as a comprehensive repertoire of modern and classical pieces that can be traced back to the 13th century. In addition to this Kudsi Erguner has performed as flautist in several operas, ballets and theatre productions and has been involved in recordings for soundtracks by Peter Brook and Peter Gabriel. At the end of the nineties he broke new musical ground with his group 'Ottomania'. For the first time he brought together classical Turkish musicians of the Mevlevi-Sufi tradition and European jazz musicians. Up until then encounters between Turkish musicians and jazz interpreters had taken place exclusively in the sphere of Turkish popular music. But in Kudsi's opinion classical and modern music are by no means exclusive forms: 'It's impossible,' he says, 'for a classical art form to remain indifferent to the influences that stream in from the whole of the world.'

Yungchen Lhamo - Ama

Yungchen Lhamo - 2006 - Ama

Yungchen Lhamo is a new kind of Tibetan, one who was not only forced out into the world at large, but who embraces all its possibilities. Born and raised in Lhasa, she never knew a Tibet that wasn't under Chinese rule. She fled the country in 1989 and now resides in New York City. It's at this cultural crossroads that Ama is born. Except for a raucous version of "Om Mani Padme Hung," this isn't a chant album, but original songs sung in Lhamo's native tongue. Produced by Jamshied Sharifi, an Iranian-American musician who is a master of global sounds and voices, Ama has a transcultural aesthetic, mixing traditional Tibetan chanting and singing with Middle Eastern percussion, fuzzed guitar, Chinese erhu, and African kora, among other instruments. Sharifi has probably listened to Steve Tibbetts's productions with the Tibetan nun Choying Drolma. Although he doesn't have Tibbetts's penchant for abstraction, their approach shares a certain austerity and atmosphere that makes the voice the central focus. "9/11" sets Lhamo in a multitracked choir, echoing distant chants with a simple mournful cello reflecting her sadness. Other tracks are more richly designed, like "Ranzen", which features growling fuzzed-guitar ambiences and Jon Hassell-like trumpet from Norway's Arve Henriksen. Much will be made of Annie Lennox's appearance on "Fade Away," but her performance seems overwrought next to Lhamo's restrained spiritualism. by John Diliberto
Product Description Among the world's great singers, a rare few become the voice of their nation. After years of international touring with the blessing of the Dalai Lama, Yungchen Lhamo has truly become the voice of Tibet. This third album for Real World (the first in 8 years) is infused with the quiet spiritual power of Tibetan Buddhism but now features Yungchen's own original songs with the striking production of Jamshied Sharifi and pan-global instrumentation to make a much more modern and indeed much more personal record than before. Ama means "mother" and Yungchen dedicates this album to her own mother who suffered greatly and raised her daughter amidst the violence and persecution of the Chinese occupation of Tibet. Themes of struggle, loss, peace and forgiveness run through this magical recording. The icing on the cake are the guest appearances from two incredible, incomparable singers Joy Askew and Annie Lennox

The backing orchestra is a stellar cast of Moroccan singer Michel Rebibo, Frank London on trumpet and David Krakauer on clarinet (both from the Klezmatics), bassist Sabah Habas Mustapha (of 3 Mustaphas 3), Egyptian percussionist Mahmoud Fadl, and drummer/percussionist Marco Maimaran.
"... Médioni was born in 1928, taught hmself the piano at an early age and frequented Oran's American bars in the 1940s. His big loves were boogie-woogie and Cuban music, and his style is born of the fusing of these distinct influences with Arabic music. The piano is, of course, a European instrument, but in Médioni's the melodies take on a middle eastern character, subtly decorated and turning round on themselves in modal arabesques. On Café Oran he is joined by the Moroccan-born singer Michel Rebibo (who sings in Arabic and French), master-percussionist Mahmoud Fadl... and by two members of The Klezmatics... on clarinet and trumpet " - Simon Broughton "World music 100 Essential CDs. The Rough Guide" " Simply said, Café Oran is one of the most original, unpretentious and organically compelling recordings to emerge from the extended encounter between Spanish, North African and Sephardic musical influences." - Michael Stone, RootsWorld
The record label says: Once upon a time in Algeria....... Maurice El Medioni reveals the past colonial splendour of Oran - the Algerian coastal city, birthplace of rai music. The Jewish pianist, one of the foremost pioneers in Algerian pop music, has mixed a nostalgic cocktail with Cuban rhythms, French cabaret chic and Arabian mellowness. The swinging melodies rekindle the cosmopolitan atmosphere of the Oran of the past when it was the melting pot for all religions and cultures. Play it again, Maurice! Biography Maurice El Medioni grew up in Algeria, in the Mediterranean port Oran. In the 1930´s he lived with his family in the Jewish quarter. Medioni´s life took a drastic turn when his brother purchased an old piano at the flea market and brought it home. Within days, Maurice, nine years old, taught himself, without the guidance of a teacher, to play popular French songs he had heard on the radio. As the influences in his life changed so did his musical style. When Algeria was liberated from the French in 1942, Maurice was playing the piano for the American troops at the US Forces Red Cross Bar in Oran. With Maurice´s permission, the soldiers used his piano to play the popular jazz and boogie-woogie numbers. By observing the dancing fingers of the soldiers he quickly learned to play these musical styles and incorporated them into his unique style. To meet the requests of the soldiers, he picked up boogie-woogie and Latino numbers. Later, befriending three Rai singers from Algeria, he was brought into the Andalous music culture, where he introduced the piano into the Rai music. Maurice gained popularity in his area and soon became the respected pianist for "l´Opéra" in Oran, joining talented musicians from many different parts of North Africa as well as other Jewish artists like Lillie Boniche and Lili Labassi. In 1962, after 8 years of civil war, Algeria gained independence from France and most Algerian Jews, including Maurice and his family, were forced into exile. "Life was good in Algeria, but when we left, we had to live hand to mouth. It's very tough to be driven from your country when you don't want to leave. It's not like being an emigrant searching for a better life." After his many years at the top of the music scene in his homeland, Maurice adapted quickly and again reached stardom in Paris, where he remained for many years. Later, the unique musical style of Maurice was recognized internationally and his career skyrocketed as demand grew. Today, at the ripe age of 72, he resides in Marseilles. He still charms the ears of onlookers, using his left hand to form the eclectic sounds of boogie, jazz and Cuban rhythms and his right hand shaping a unique Arabic style.

Belly Dance with Warda & Abdel Halim Hafiz

Abdel Halim Hafez - Arabian Greats [BOX SET] Warda - Dandana Setrak And His Belly Dance Orchestra Belly Dance with Warda & Abdel Halim Hafiz

Warda al Jazairia - The Rose of Algeria: She was born near Paris in Puteaux in July 1940. The youngest of five children. Her father, Mohammed Ftouki was one of the first Algerian immigrants to France, ran a hostel for migrant workers at Boulogne-Billancourt then became the owner of an Arabic music cabaret in the Quartier Latin called the Tam-Tam (named after the three initials of the three Maghreb countries, Tunisia, Algeria, and Morocco). She used to sneak out of her room every night and hide in one of the corners for two or three hours to listen to the band while they were playing or rehearsing in her father's night club below and then she would sing for her self the next morning. In those days Warda was unable to write any Arabic, she always had to ask her older brother to write out all her Arabic songs in the Latin alphabet. From time to time Warda's father was tolerant enough to allow his daughter's brief appearance on a stage of his club at the request of a friend. Warda's mother was a Lebanese born in Beirut in a Moslem family of good social position. She had taught Warda every Lebanese song of some importance. Thus the girl's liking for the Middle Eastern song had developed. She was only a little girl when she would sing songs by Abdelwahab or Farid Elatrash. Ahmad Tejani, a friend of Warda's father, was working for a famous record company, Pathè Marconi-EMI (now EMI France), which used to produce children's programs for North African Arabs in France on the Paris radio station. During one of his visits to the TAM TAM club he heard her singing and liked her voice so much that, shortly after, he presented her to the radio and she participated in the show with a song called "Song for the Mother". In 1958, as Paris was more and more concerned by the development of the Algerian War of Independence, the whole family had to seek refuge in Beirut where she went on singing militant songs. The whole family lived in a small apartment in Al Hamra Street in Beirut. When Warda started singing in Tanyos, a famous night club in Aley, she was only 17 and her national songs were hardly the style for night clubs. On one of the nights when she was performing Mohamed Abdul Wahab was among the audience. At the end of her performance he approached her and proposed that he compose for her, such a proposal she could not refuse. He was to become, throughout her career, her "godfather". His extremely demanding, almost tyrannical, working methods would change her forever. For the "Oustaz" (The Master) the only price of glory was hard work and dedication, and this was a challenge for Warda for she had to learn how to write Arabic and to erase her Algerian accent. In 1959, in Syria, the great composer, Riad al Soumbati heard her performing a nationalistic song called "Koulouna Jamila" during Damascus Festival and was seduced by her voice. He decided to invite her to Cairo where he was to compose many songs for her among them "Loubat el Ayyam" and "Nida el Dhamir". When she arrived in Cairo in 1960, Riad Sombati was willing to help her: he set two music poems by an Egyptian poet: "Ya huria ana bendahlek" (I am calling you, O Liberty), "Dalia Djamila", in honor of Palestine, and he also composed the musical part of a play "Alikhwa thalata Deir Yassine" (The three brothers from Deir Yassin). In 1961/1962 the Egyptian President, Gamal Abdel Nasser asked that she participate, as the representative of Algeria, in a song for the Arab world called "Al Watan Al Akbar". This song was composed by Mohamed Abdel Wahab and Warda had the chance to appear alongside other famous singers such as Abdel Halim Hafez, Sabah, Fayza Ahmed, Najat al Sagheera and Shadya. The film director Helmy Rafla heard Warda and put her forward for a major role in his film "Almaz Wa Abdu Al Hamoly". For this film both Mohamed Abdel Wahab and Farid el Atrache were to compose her songs. In 1962, Algeria became independent. In 1963, she flew there for the first time to marry a former high ranking officer in the National Liberation Army (ALN) she had met during her stay in Lebanon. Her husband asked her to give up singing to look after her family - which she did for ten years but was very, her career seemed to be definitively over. But in 1972, Houari Boumedienne, the President of Algeria, asked her to participate in the celebration of the 10th Anniversary of the Independence. She agreed, with the result that her marriage broke down. ElMassia Egyptian orchestra was sent to accompany her singing her comeback song: "Ad'uka ya amali", a poem by the Algerian poet Salah Kharfi, music by Baligh Hamdi. In December of the same year she left for Cairo where she became very rapidly one of the most famous Arab singers with "Elûyûn essûd", "Khallik Nena" and other songs in the same vein composed by Baligh Hamdi, whom she had just married. She began working with the most famous composers of the time, Riad al Soumbati, Baligh Hamdi (whom she was later to marry and who was to compose so many of her successful songs during ten years), Kamal al Tawel, Said Mekkawi and of course, the "Oustaz" Mohamed Abdel Wahab. She played a part in two films: "Sût elhob" (The voice of love) and "Hikaiti maa ezzaman" (My fate and me), in which she sang works by M. Abdelwahab, Kamal El Tawil, Mohammed Elmûgui and by her husband Baligh Hamdi. In recent years she has worked particularly closely with the composer Salah el Sharnoubi, the lyricist Omar Batiesha, the musician Tarek Akef and producer Mohsen Gaber (Alam El Fan), an association which led to three of her albums receiving the award of "Best Album of the Year" in 1991, 1992 and 1994. Warda al Jazairia - The Rose of Algeria - has always brought joy and pleasure, through her art, talent and magical voice, to her many fans and admirers across the Arab world and globally through more than 300 carefully chosen songs and with concerts booked all over the world.
Abdel Halim Hafez : Despite a fairly short career, singer/movie-actor Hafez was one of the most influential Egyptian stars of the 1950s and '60s. His mellow, resonant voice, subtle vocal style and notably clean intonation marked him out, along with a liking for long, seemingly endless musical phrases. When Mohamed Abdel Wahhaab switched from singing to composition, he pretty much stepped into his shoes. Born in 1929, Abdel Halim studied at Cairo's Institute of Arabic Music and the Higher Institute for Theatre Music, and began his career teaching and playing oboe before taking aim at vocal stardom. His first hit came in 1951, and he soon signed a contract with Abdel Wahhaab to sing his songs and appear in his films. During the 1960s, he started to sing colloquial poetry more colorful and meaningful and nearer to popular folk song than ordinary pop songs, and his work on these lines had a significant influence on popular song in general. He cofounded a film company and the Saut el-Fann record label in the early '60s, and remained a major star until he died in 1977 of Bilharzia, which he had caught as a child and which had begun to affect him intermittently from 1955 onward.
