Asian Groove

Posted By MiOd On 10:03 AM 0 comments
Putumayo Presents: Asian Groove
Somewhere along the line, the term "oriental" became politically incorrect. The term was in no way derogatory -- it simply referred to people from what used to be called the Orient (China, Japan, Vietnam, Korea, and Thailand), just as the term "Scandinavian" is applied to people from Sweden, Norway, Denmark, and Finland. But the language police took a disliking to the word (without justification), and now, the word Asian is generally applied to those who are from what was once known as the Orient. So when one sees the title Asian Groove, it is logical to assume that Putumayo means Asian as in Chinese, Japanese, or Korean, but Putumayo actually means Asian as in Indian and Pakistani. There are plenty of excellent compilations of traditional Indian and Pakistani music, but Asian Groove is totally modern in its outlook -- most of the artists combine Indian or Pakistani elements with modern funk, dance-pop, electronica, or reggae. Technically, the contemporary Indian and Pakistani pop sounds that dominate this rewarding compilation are indeed Asian grooves, but infectious tracks like Bally Sagoo's "Noorie" and A.S. Kang's "Terian Gulabi Buliyan" have more in common with Turkish, Jewish, or Greek pop than they do with the pop sounds that are coming out of Japan, China, or Korea. And that's because Indian and Pakistani music -- like Turkish, Greek, Armenian, Jewish, Syrian, or North African music -- involves what is called modal playing. Those who aren't professional musicians may not know the technical meaning of the word modal, but they'll be able hear the parallels between Asian Groove and collections of Turkish pop or Algerian rai. Karmix's "Sabhyata," in fact, combines Indian and Algerian elements. Asian Groove doesn't have anything to do with Chinese or Japanese pop, but it's a lively, enjoyable survey of contemporary Indian and Pakistani sounds. ~ Alex Henderson, All Music Guide

Festival In The Desert

Posted By MiOd On 9:08 PM 0 comments

Throwing an enormous Woodstock-style music festival in the middle of the Sahara desert--the gorgeous photos included in the booklet to Festival in the Desert make clear--isn't exactly easy. Held during the last three years in the shifting sands of northern Mali, the Festival in the Desert has brought together a mix of desert nomads and pop stars to play sublimely enchanting music in some of the harshest but most starkly beautiful conditions imaginable. Luckily for us, the 2003 Festival produced this impressive and varied CD, mixing together tracks from Malian superstars like Oumou Sangare and Ali Farka Toure with lesser knowns like the Mauritanian singer Aicha Bint Chinghaly and the desert nomads Tinariwen, who a few years ago traded their rifles in for electric guitars when the civil war in northern Mali abated. The biggest name here, of course, is Robert Plant, who turns in a wailing medley of old blues tunes. But Led Zeppelin-heads who buy the CD just for him--particularly those drawn to the Middle-Eastern strains of Plant's music from "Kashmir" through his recent collaborations with Jimmy Page--are in for quite a pleasant surprise when they hear the rest of the disc. What comes across the most, despite the star power present, is the energy of the live performances in such an extraordinary setting, making the Navajo rock band Blackfire, the gorgeous duet between Italian pianist Ludovico Einaudi and the Malian kora player Ballake Sissoko, the otherworldly collaboration between French rappers Kwal and the Touareg (desert nomad) guitarist and singer Foy-Foy, and the French sisters Lo'Jo's duet with Malian guitarist Django all sound like natural pairings, unfolding together under the Saharan sky.

Moroccan Spirit

Posted By MiOd On 5:47 AM 0 comments
The lush Moroccan Spirit emphasizes music's meditative qualities, but this imaginative mix of traditional and modern also works on a less contemplative level. The Brave--the guy behind Sacred Spirit, Indigo Spirit, and B-Tribe--traveled throughout Morocco over a five-year period with a microphone and a tape recorder, capturing the essence of both the Arab and Berber cultures. He then wove these disparate musical threads into a cohesive multicultural musical fabric using unobtrusive electronic beats and studio programming. There's even a bit of electronic groove on some of the more upbeat tracks. "Jim I Nim" and "La Mamounia" crackle with the vitality of traditional Moroccan dance music, but could easily work at hip world-music-friendly nightclubs. Mellow highlights include the somber "Music for 1001 Nights: Outro" and "Moroccan Soul," which is propelled by soulful women singers. The album's not as challenging as the more radical hybrids using North African music, but Moroccan Spirit is far more than mere background noise. --Tad Hendrickson

This group, of which the name is borrowed from the bratsche (viola), the rhythmic instrument of the orchestras Tziganes, was born from the meeting of daN Gharibian (bouzouki, guitar and song) and of Bruno Girard (violin and song). They will be joined soon by Pierre Jacquet with the double low and François Castiello with the accordion and the song. The family will be finally joined together with the arrival of Nano Peylet to the clarinet and the song. Their music is an invitation with the voyage: gypsy music with the repertory of Central Europe, while passing by more traditional songs and klezmer. Full with the world is a disc where some stowawaies of reputation embarked: Olivia Ruiz, Charles Aznavour, Balbino Medellin, Upright on Zinc, the street Ketanou, Sanseverino, Tété, Khaled, Nery, Nourith, Lhasa and Juliette.

Esma - Queen Of The Gypsies

Posted By MiOd On 4:05 AM 0 comments
Esma Red?epovais a Roma vocalist, songwriter, and humanitarian born in Skopje, Republic of Macedonia. During her life she has performed in more than 8000 concerts in 30 countries, and with her late husband Stevo Teodosievski has fostered forty-seven children. By her own account she has has created more than 500 works. These include 108 singles, 20 albums, and 6 movies. Early Life and Background Esma was born on August 8, 1943, in the predominately Roma ?uto Orizari municipality of Skopje, now capital of the Republic of Macedonia. She is the second youngest of six children. Her mother was a Turkish Muslim, while her father was a Serbian born in Tirana, Albania. His grandmother and grandfather were an Iraqi Jew and a Catholic Roma respectively. Her family was relatively (but not abjectly) poor growing up, her father working variously as a porter, singer, drummer, circus strongman and shoe shine. Her parents stressed that all six children finish primary school. At age nine Esma was introduced by one of her brothers to a local Roma music organisation, where she was able to quickly learn complicated rhythms. Her mother encouraged her musical gifts and Esma and her brother soon joined their school's folklore group. In 1957, age 14, she was personally invited to sing at a school talent contest for Radio Skopje. This concert proved to be a turning point—not only did she place first, beating out 57 other schools and winning 9000 dinars,[5] but national band leader and future husband Stevo Teodosievski also happened to be in attendance. After securing permission from her parents, Esma began touring with his musical ensemble. Legend has it she left home with a single suitcase filled with one dress and one Cocek costume. In recent years, Esma has remained popular throughout the Balkans. In 2004, she recorded a duet with Eurovision performer Tose Proeski called "Magija".

The Sufi Path of Love

The Sufi Path of Love

Entering the Heart of Hearts

Llewellyn Vaughan-Lee

Alt text

A lover of God, says the Sufi, is one who longs to be dissolved in the Beloved, in love's limitless ocean. For more than 10 centuries, the Sufis have perfected love's inner alchemy—the way the heart opens to the ecstasy of divine union. On The Sufi Path of Love, teacher and author Llewellyn Vaughan-Lee shares the secrets of this transformation, a “turning of the heart” that awakens the soul's innermost love affair. Weaving together dreamwork, the teachings of his own Naqshbandi order, the archetypal psychology of C.G. Jung, and more than 1,100 years of Sufi wisdom, poetry, and teaching stories, Vaughan-Lee takes us into the wonder of this spiraling inward journey. You will discover what is hidden within the deepest chamber of the heart; how this path uses the joys and sorrows of personal relationship as the prima materia for spiritual growth; how the fire of longing purifies us; and finally, how the lover surrenders blissfully into the arms of the Beloved.

“To be a lover of God is not an abstraction,” teach the Sufis. “It is a reality that permeates every cell of your body.” On The Sufi Path of Love, you are invited to share in this ancient wisdom of love and longing and to let your own heart's desire become a burning flame.

The word Sufi is derived from the Greek "Sophia", meaning Wisdom. It is known as Tasawwuf ( Mysticism ) in Arabic, and is considered

by scholars as the mystical, the inner or psycho-spiritual aspect of Philosophia Islamica. The great scholar, Seyyed Hossein Nasr,

considered Sufism as the esoteric dimension of Al Islam.

Sufism emphasises on the Unity of Absolute Being,Wahdat al Wujud.

The Influence of Neoplatonism on Sufism

Plotinus, the founder of Neoplatonism conceived God as the Alpha

and Omega of Existence, its Source & Goal. The translations of

Plotinus provied the philosophical ground for Sufism. One is

struck by the similarities which exist in both systems, with

regard to the concept of God, the soul, the body, Vice and

Virtue, Life and Death and Beauty!

Sufism was influenced by Orpheus and Pythagoreanism. Orpheus

was a poet who lived in Anatolia in the 6th and 7th centuries

BCE. He had divine qualities and he could influence wild

animals with his music. He postulated that the human soul

can achieve perfection by refining itself from all passions

and worldly possessions. Soul travels from body to body for

self purification and reaches the Perfect State. Pythagorus

adopted Orpheus' philosophy and integrated it with his own

concepts. Plotinus, the founder of Neoplatonism took Plato's

Theory of Ideas & reinterpreted them from Protagoras' point

of view. Neoplatonism considers God as the Alpha & the Omega.

From Him everything comes into being,in Him everything exists,

and to Him all return. Communion or Union with Him is the

highest Goal, therefore. Our lives have only a symbolic

meaning and it is good and necessary as a Becoming. But all

Becoming has Being as its Goal and Fulfillment and God is

the only Being !

Sufism is the Path of Love - Al Muhabba. God is understood as Universal Love and the aim of Sufism is to unite with the Source of all Being, Universal Love ! Love without Philosophy is superstition and Sufism therefore encourages the adventures of the Intellect, the scientific and the philosophical pursuit, Al Marifa !

When he was asked about Sufism, Junayd ( the preceptor of Mansur Al Hallaj ) said, "Sufism is that you should be with God-- without any attachment."

Sufism emphasises upon the struggle to overcome the dominance that one's Negative Ego ( Nafs ) has over one. The war depicted in the great Epics - Iliad & the Odyssey etc - depict the great war between Good and Evil happening inside the human bosom - where the great struggle for supremacy is fought out on the ground floor of our existence, between the black and white opposites of Virtue and Vice, Light

and Darkness, prosperity & adversity. The Beloved ( God ) may manifest as Benevolence or Severity and the Sufi aspirant has to love both !

As Rumi said:

I am a lover of both His benevolence and severity!

Amazing it is that I'm in love with these opposites !

If the aspirant can overcome one's Negative Ego, ( in

the inner War, Jihad ul Nafs ) he can achieve Bliss,

the Bliss for which the world's derelict sorrows yearn !

If you could get rid of yourself just once,

The secret of secrets would open to you.

The face of the Unknown, hidden beyond the universe

Would appear on the Mirror of your perception. - Rumi

The Sheik of Naqshbandi wrote

In my annihilation of annihilation

In my annhilation

I found You !

Rumi wrote

I thought about You so often

That I completely became You !

Little but little You drew near

Slowly but slowly I passed away.

This passing away is Annihilation in the Beloved ( Fana fi Allah ). There is another intermediary state - Fana al Fana and the last state is Baqi bi Allah or Permanence in the Beloved.

About Universal Truth, Ibn Arabi, the Great Master , ( al Shaikh al Akbar ) wrote She has eluded the learned of Islam

And those who have studied the Psalms

The Jewish Rabbi

The Christian priest !

The greatest Sufi was Mohammed himself ( Peace be upon him ), he who said that " Shariah ( Ethical Law ) is my speech, Tariqat ( the Way ) my actions & Haqiqat ( Truth ) my states " !

Inner & Outer Jihad ( Struggle ) in Sufism

"And those who perform jihad for Us, We shall certainly guide them in Our ways, and God is surely with the doers of good". (Quran XXXIX; 69)

"You have returned from the lesser jihad to the greater jihad" . (Hadith)

Jihad means struggle and there are two types of struggle. The lesser Jihad is struggle against the oppressors; the greater Jihad is the inner struggle against the inner enemies, the Seven Deadly Sins ( lust, greed, anger, jealousy, sloth, covetousness & gluttony). The outer struggle is defined as Al Jihad Al Asghar and the inner struggle is Al Jihad Al Akbar ! In his journey, the aspirant ultimately overcomes his Negative Ego & he becomes the Perfect Man, Al Insan Al Kamil !

Putumayo Presents: American Folk

Posted By MiOd On 11:42 AM 0 comments

Putumayo is primarily a world music label; whether the focus is Celtic, African, Middle Eastern, Caribbean, or Latin music, the vast majority of Putumayo's compilations have had some type of world music connection. But American Folk is an exception -- and while this compilation doesn't unearth the sort of delightfully unorthodox things Putumayo has a way of finding (such as Scottish and Japanese artists playing salsa), it is a disc that isn't lacking when it comes to quality. As its title suggests, this 46-minute, 12-track CD spotlights American folk recordings -- specifically, American folk-rock recordings of the '90s and 2000s. Instead of getting into folkies who made their mark in the '50s or '60s, American Folk sets out to demonstrate that folk-rock is alive and well in the 21st century -- and many of the artists are people who emerged in the '80s, '90s, or 2000s, including Patty Griffin, Lucy Kaplansky, Shannon McNally, Josh Ritter, Christine Kane, and Nanci Griffith (who shines on an intimate remake of Bob Dylan's "Boots of Spanish Leather"). Natalie Merchant, meanwhile, is in fine form on her 2003 recording of the traditional "Owensboro," which favors a sparer and more stripped-down approach than most of her recordings with 10,000 Maniacs or her 1995 solo debut Tigerlily. Given Putumayo's history of being ultra-adventurous, it wouldn't have been surprising if they had come up with something by artists who are really pushing the folk-rock envelope (such as Adam Brodsky and Deirdre Flint, two Philadelphia-based anti-folk/folk-rock artists known for their madcap, over-the-top humor). But while American Folk isn't as daring as other Putumayo releases, it's still a worthwhile, engaging disc that paints an attractive picture of folk-rock in the 21st century. ~ Alex Henderson, All Music Guide

Guitarra Clásica y Flamenca Española

Posted By MiOd On 9:15 AM 0 comments

(wikipedia)

Aziza Mustafa Zadeh - Always

Posted By MiOd On 7:31 AM 0 comments
First of all, names on this album make this album what it is. Of course it is one of Aziza's albums ( for me, it is one and only the best ) At drums; Dave Veckl, Bass; John Pattituci, Compositons-piano and vocals ; Aziza Mustafa Zadeh. This album,ALWAYS,is the most powerfull trio album of hers to show out her mysterious world in her brain and heart of course. She has extremely sensitive and also energetic piano style and it is felt more in this album.Without doubt, Always is the locomotive song of this album, as a name father. As completely baroque, you can feel her first studies of Bach inside really. So many passion brings you emotions that has no describe that i can either write down here or you can say after hearing and feeling that song. The unison bass and piano sounds a real love out of this world. As I believe real love is a utopia, this song just lite another hope till you hear the last note.I can say that the darkest song of the album is Insult. It is a attractive combination of jazz and azerbajian modes. This is her way to be ethnic.Marriage Suit is a hard piece to play as being cornered construction, but it has everything to sound like a wedding song. The taste of this album is covering melodies and motives by a master.

Hossein Alizadeh - Torkaman

Posted By MiOd On 7:53 PM 0 comments
Hossein Alizadeh is one of Iran's leading classical composers and musicians. A virtuosic player of the six-stringed Persian tar, four-stringed Persian sehtar and eleven-stringed Azeri tar, Alizadeh has continued to extend the musical traditions of his homeland. In addition to composing orchestral pieces such as "Riders of the Plains of Hope," "Revolt," "Hey Nava," "Torkaman," "Raz-O-Niaz" and "Song of Compassion," Alizadeh has recorded the entire "Radif," based on an interpretation by Mirza Abdullah.

Alizadeh was destined to become a musician. His mother, a Persian from Arak, and his father, an Azeri from Urmia, both loved music. In 1962, shortly after seeing his first tar in a Tehran music store, Alizadeh began taking lessons in the instrument. By his late teens, he had mastered the stringed instrument. His knowledge of music was further expanded during the childhood summers that he spent in Tabriz and Urmiya, two major cities of the Azerbaijoni region of Iran. Tuning into a radio station from Soviet Azerbaijoni, he became enchanted by Azerian music.

Following his graduation from a high school-level music conservatory, Alizadeh worked as a composer at the Center for the Intellectual Development of Children in Tehran, studied at the Center for the promotion of Classical Persian Music and attended art college. After earning a bachelor's degree in music composition and performance from the School of Music at the University of Tehran, he continued with graduate studies at the University of Fine Arts in Tehran. In the aftermath of the Islamic revolution of 1979, Alizadeh became increasingly interested in Azerian music and went to Tabriz to study with Ali Salimi.

Alizadeh began his professional musical career with the Iranian National Orchestra, rising to the position of conductor and soloist of the National Orchestra of Radio and Television of Iran. He continued to promote Persian classical music with the Aref Ensemble and the Shayda Ensemble. Alizadeh's first professional experience in Europe came when he joined the orchestra of the Bejart Ballet Company for performances of the Maurice Bejart ballet, "Gulistan." In the early 1980s, Alizadeh studied composition and musicology at the University of Berlin. Alizadeh has taught at the University of Tehran and the Tehran Music Conservatory. In the fall of 1997, he taught world music at Cal Arts in Velencia, CA. ~ Craig Harris, All Music Guide

Let me start with a look at the main peice; Torkaman. Yes that is performed by only one man, alizadeh. The power, the energy and the depth of this is absolutely exceptional, and I can remember even some ones in persia who didnt believe in alizadeh till himself played it front them in Rodaki hall! this piece is taken as its main theme from local celebration of torkamans who live in the north of iran.

Tea music [2] - Tea Travel

Posted By MiOd On 2:29 AM 0 comments
As a blending art, tea is evolved into an abundant image by mixing fragrance of the earth, magnificence of mountains and rivers, moisture of rain and dew, and cultural temper.
In this edition, the composers depict exquisitely tastes of tea and scenes of tea plantations in different areas by applying various features of musical instruments, such as Flute, Panhu, Kucheng, Lute, Sheng, alto Juan, and alto Sona, and combining local musical qualities with sounds of nature.

The Essential Guide to Africa [Box set]

Posted By MiOd On 4:53 PM 0 comments
African music is a huge field to condense into three CDs, and no compilation the size of The Essential Guide to Africa could claim to boil down the continent's sounds to their essence. Keeping expectations at a realistic level, however, this is a decent, sizable survey that draws from numerous regions and styles -- too many, in fact, to detail in a paragraph or two -- mixing the work of major performers who are relatively well-known globally with less familiar names. Those major performers include Salif Keita, Youssou N'Dour, Aster Aweke, Fela Kuti, Mahlathini & the Mahotella Queens, Ladysmith Black Mambazo, Manu Dibango, Miriam Makeba (the version of her famous "Click Song" here is a 2003 remake, incidentally), and Baaba Maal, and if many other big names are missing from King Sunny Ade on down, it'd be unrealistic to demand inclusion of all of them. The CDs are divided into thematic discs, the "African Legends" one boasting the highest concentration of famous artists; "Acoustic Africa" getting into more acoustic and traditional sounds; and "Free Spirits" acting as a kind of catch-all for music that's not as easily categorized. Though the highly danceable (if somewhat monotonous to Western pop-attuned ears) contemporary African music heard on much of the "African Legends" disc is what's gotten the greatest exposure on a worldwide level, the less predictable sounds on the other discs are more satisfying. These detour into recordings that show the influence of (or at least similarities to) blues, pop, jazz, zydeco, and rumba, also taking in a wide variety of traditional instrumentation and, on selections like Fuji Dub's "Fuji Dr. Ewon," extensive percussion-and-voice workouts. A few cuts, like Ismael Lô's "Fa Diallo" and Simentera's "Oxi Nao," verge on being songs with a Western pop-like structure, though they're not typical of this collection. There's also les Troubadours Du Roi Baufoin's haunting, echoed choral vocal-and-percussion "Missa Luba: Kyrie," which might actually be the most widely heard track here, as it was used in the classic British film If. Like many a compilation from the Union Square group, this anthology's not so hot when it comes to exact dates of recording and release for all of the tracks, though generally speaking it's mostly from the 1980s through the early 2000s. ~ Richie Unterberger, All Music Guide

Zhang Fu-quan, a highly praised musician in mainland China, entered the Composition Department of Central Music Academy in 1960 and then transferred to the China Music Academy to continue his study. His famous works include “Su San”, “Fan Xu-dong” and “The Wedding Ceremony” and so on. His profound attainments and high artistry attracted attention domestically and abroad.

Drinking tea has developed into a form of art in Chinese culture. In this album, the composer makes the best use of different characteristics of musical instruments, including Pai-Hsiao (blowed instrument), Gao-Hu (bowed instrument), Ku-cheng (plucked instrument), Pi-Pa (plucked instrument), alto Sheng (blowed instrument), etc., and combines peculiarities of local music to describe different tastes of tea and views in different regions. Mohamed Naiem - Master Of The Arabian Flute

Posted By MiOd On 1:10 AM 0 comments
Master Of The Arabian Flute - A Hossam Ramzy Presentation Mohamed Naiem A perfect gift for the soul
If the sunset over the Nile’s golden water could be transcribed into sound it will be the magic that Mohamed Naiem (who counts among the best Egyptian Nay and Kawala players) brings to us through this new collaboration (Master of the Arabian Flute) with Egypt’s Ambassador of Rhythm, Hossam Ramzy. This album also features the amazing keyboard player, Osama Al Hendy, one of Hossam’s protégées and world-renowned composer and arranger. This album features the three of them, Mohammed, Hossam & Osama in an album that was composed in a musical heaven. Soft, haunting melodies that take us on a dreamy journey to the most far-away desert of our darkest dreams and later on to the evergreen oasis in our hearts. Gentle songs that transform Arabian warm nights under Egyptian lonely skies into magic carpets, on which we can travel to the furthest stars in the long forgotten galaxy of memories. Each tune is an inspiration full of equally clear, digitally recorded and mastered sounds that reach the deepest feelings of the human spirit. Once again Hossam brings us a wonderful world where Nay and Kawala come alive and become the protagonists of fantasies. A beautiful collection of enchanting and fascinating atmospheric music.

Mohamed Naiem, a mainstay of the Egyptian nightclub virtuoso scene, is likely best-known internationally for his work behind Hossam Ramzy on a number of albums. Here, he's accompanied by Ramzy on percussion, but he gets the chance to shine at the forefront on both the nay and the kawala. While the compositions are largely written by Naiem and Ramzy together, the tone is distinctly different from the majority of Ramzy's work. There is no driving percussion, no synths or string arrangements here. The focus is very clearly on the nay, with only minimal accompaniment. The mood is somewhat pensive, as the flutes lend themselves well to such, and the content itself ranges from devotional hymns and prayers to Allah, to almost poetic love odes. This album is one of a very few on the market to show the nay in its own right, with some stunning lines here and there, but primarily in a state of contemplation, evoking a voice (which is the ultimate goal of the player). Naiem is truly the star of this album, and he makes the most of it with his formidable abilities.

Carmen Linares - Cantaora

Posted By MiOd On 9:51 PM 0 comments
Cantaora is the title of this record, because she is undoubtedly one of the great female performers of our age. A student of flamenco traditions, she has earned herself a place among the best in the world of singing after excelling in numerous concerts all over the world. This work opened up the doors to Europe and Japan to her. She is very well accompanied: Paco Cortés and Pedro Sierra on guitar, Chocolate de Madrid and Talegón for palm-clapping and jaleos (vocal accompaniment involving loud interjections of encouragement or admiration), Javier Barón for heel stamping and Antonio Carmona (Ketama) on the cajón (box-drum).
