Manny Oquendo & Libre - Los New Yorkinos!

Posted By MiOd On 5:29 AM 0 comments
Latin jazz musicians have thrived, artistically and commercially, in New York for decades. The veteran timbalero Manny Oquendo and his group Libre have been doing that since 1974. Just as Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers spawned the future stars Wynton and Branford Marsalis and Terence Blanchard, the best and brightest Latin musicians have come from Oquendo's Libre--including conguero and trumpeter Jerry Gonzalez and his bass-playing brother, Andy. This edition of Libre features Andy Gonzalez on bass, trombonists Papo Vazquez and Jimmy Bosch, and pianist Willie Rodriguez. Oquendo and company swing on the salsa jams "Oquendo y Libre" and "Muevete un Poco," (the former featuring rapper El Cacique) and offer a kicking treatment of the Count Basie favorite, "Lester Leaps In." The husky contralto of Cuba's Xiomara Lugart colors the ballroom bolero "Quiereme y Veras," enhanced by Joe Locke's orchestral synthesizer and vibraphone fills. The guaracha-rumba "No Cuentas" and the mambo-son "Chiquilla Ideal" exemplify the call-and-response and montuno traditions that cement Latin music's thrilling range. --Eugene Holley Jr.

Shivkumar Sharma & Zakir Hussain - Raga Purya Kalyan

Posted By MiOd On 1:54 AM 0 comments
Sharma is a virtuoso of the santur, a hammered dulcimer of a kind found all the way from western China to Hungary. But he's more than simply a virtuoso player. He's the man who introduced it from the purely folk tradition to the classical canon and gave it a whole technical vocabulary as he did so. Zakir Hussain, who's well-known in the New Age-cum-Crossover world, is a genuinely brilliant classical tabla player. Here the two of them perform -- delightfully -- a piece combining two ragas, one meditative and one somewhat romantic.

Masters of Turkish Music

Posted By MiOd On 7:41 PM 0 comments
Masters of Turkish Music features 20 tracks of Turkish classical music, taken from 78s recorded between 1906 and 1949. This has much wider appeal than the typical archival world music release. The taksim (improvisations) and gazels (vocal improvisations) are extremely emotional and moving, and there is a good deal of variety in the 75-minute program, in both content and instrumentation. The "classical" term shouldn't scare off those who are not approaching this music from a scholarly viewpoint; it draws heavily on folk traditions, and is as passionate as any Middle Eastern music you're likely to encounter. Especially entrancing are the full-throttle gazel improvisations of Hamiyet Yüceses. On the more instrumentally oriented pieces, the oud and tanbur playing is a clear source point for modern musicians working in the style. It certainly seems as though Sandy Bull, for instance, may have been exposed to this music, either directly or indirectly. Despite the age of the recordings, the sound is very good -- even on the performances dating back to the early 20th century, the transfers seem to be clear as technology will allow.

Amjad Ali Khan - My Inspirations

Posted By MiOd On 12:06 PM 0 comments
A celebration of the great singing tradition inspired by singers from five different gharanas: Ustad Faiyaz Khan, Ustad Abdul Karim Khan, Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan, Ustad Amir Khan, and Surshri Kesarbai Kerkar. The great singers celebrated in the two discs were all leading exponents of the khyal style of singing, which has been the most prominent vocal genre of North Indian classical music for nearly three centuries (and of course its history goes back far beyond that). Most of the singers were in their heyday during the era of the old 78 rpm records, which necessitated short performances on record. Subsequent LP (33 rpm) compilations made from them thus presented a few different compositions and ragas rather than just one or two longer renditions. In some ways this compilation presents something similar, though on a wider canvas, and recreates the intimate atmosphere when Indian music was performed much more among small gatherings of genuine music lovers than in large halls to a more mixed crowd. At the height of his career and now a veteran and doyen among Indian artists Ustad Amjad Ali Khan is revealing his respect for the great singers of the preceding generation and the inspiration he continues to draw from them, giving us this insight into how he has absorbed the legacy.

Omara Portuondo - Flor De Amor

Posted By MiOd On 5:07 PM 0 comments
Flor de Amor is the second World Circuit outing for Cuban diva Omara Portuondo, whose debut for the label topped the world music charts in 2000. This time out, Portuondo and producers Nick Gold, Jerry Boys, and Alé Siqueira assemble a sultry, steamy, and extremely elegant collection of love songs that are steeped in the popular Cuban bolero, rhumba, ritmo, guajira, and mambo traditions, but there is also the airiness of Brazilian pop music in the tunes produced by Siqueira. The players are from three generations of Cuban studio musicians, and include Barbarito Torres, Orlando "Cachaito" Lopez, Manuel Galbán, Roberto Fonseca, Carlos Emilio, and dozens of others, with a few Anglo players and singers as well. This is one of the most elegant recordings to come from the Buena Vista Social Club set. The album opens with the ethereal "Tabú." It is a song of longing for Africa with a gorgeous clarinet line played by Javier Zalba and a wispy backing chorus that winds around Portuondo; she blends in a Yoruban spiritual chant without breaking stride or upsetting the nocturnal balance of the tune. Jorge Chicoy's trademark electric guitar sound graces many of these tunes, with none so beautiful as "Amor de Mis Amores" ("Love of my life/Lifeblood of my veins/Give me the bloom of hope/Let me tell you the bittersweet truth/Of my suffering..."), with its chorus and entwining guitars and percussion. The classic "Amorosa Guajira" is haunting and tender; it features the singer accompanied only by Papi Oviedo's 12-string. The closing cut is written in Portuguese by Brazilian pop star Carlinhos Brown along with Junior Costa. Portuondo rises to the occasion, and sings this samba-inspired ballad with aplomb -- there is even a subtle theremin line by producer Siqueira! Flor de Amor is a wonderfully seamless, sensually charged, slow burn of an album that is nothing short of a work of art.

Imrat Khan - Maestro's Choice

Posted By MiOd On 2:28 AM 0 comments
Ustad Imrat Khan is one of the world's greatest players of the surbahar, a deep-toned, sitar-like stringed instrument that was developed by his great-grandfather, Ustad Sahabdad Khan, and Ustad Imdad Khan. With its four-octave range, the instrument is used to play the ultra-strict dhrupad style of Indian classical music. Still young when his father died, Imrat Khan was taught to play the surbahar and to sing in the highly ornamental classical vocal style of khyal by his mother, Bashiran Begum, and his maternal grandfather, Ustad Bandeh Hassan. Forming one of the first sitar-and-surbahad duos with his older brother, Vilayat Khan, Imrat helped to pioneer the unique gayaki ang ("vocal manner") approach to Indian instrumental music. In 1956, the two brothers were invited to accompany the first Indian cultural delegation to the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe. Although they elected to go their separate ways, Imrat and Vilayat have both continued to play major roles in the evolution of Indian classical music. Teaching at Dartington College of the Arts in England from 1968 to 1970, Imrat became the first Indian classical musician to perform at the Royal Albert Hall in London, England, in 1971. He received a prestigious Sangeet Natak Akademi Award from the president of India in 1988. During the '90s, Imrat performed many shows and recorded with his four sons: Nishat (sitar), Irshad (sitar), Wajahat (sarod), and Shafaatullah (tabla). Imrat composed and/or performed on Satyajit Ray's Jalsaghar (Le Salon de Musique), and the soundtracks of such films as James Ivory's The Guru and the Michael Caine/Sidney Poitier-starring movie The Wilby Conspiracy.

This reissue of the classic 1979 recording is devoted to instrumentals for tar (Dariush Tala'i), nay (Mohammad Musavi), and santur (Majid Kiani). All are outstanding, but the nay playing is simply breathtaking. It is superb music and the notes give plenty of general background but are totally lacking in properly attributed track information.

Chico and the Gypsies - Vagabundo

Posted By MiOd On 7:22 AM 0 comments
Guitarist/vocalist Chico Bouchikhi got his start with the Gipsy Kings, who made their infectious brand of flamenco a worldwide phenomenon in the late '80s. One of the first world music groups to explode into the mainstream, the band eventually became a family affair, so Bouchikhi left to form his own group, and the results are much the same. On Vagabundo, Chico & the Gypsies deliver the same impassioned sort of flamenco romanticism, adding subtle flavorful touches such as piano, bass, keyboards, and even tabla and clarinet on the hypnotic "Arles" to give their music a better-than-pedestrian allure. Fans of the Gipsy Kings may find Chico & the Gypsies to be somewhat derivative, but the truth is that, in a blind taste test, the two bands' sounds are virtually indistinguishable.

Chico, formerly of 'The Gypsie Kings' has outdone himself. This new fusion of great great muscianship and composition on all pices of this album make this one of the albums your collection cannot be without: like Bridge over Troubled waters, Heart's 1st album, etc....this one has it all and varries.

Mesmerizing Maestros
Pt. Brijbhushan Kabra & Ustad Zakir Hussain
The six selections in this album are a beautiful mix of the traditional and the Dhun-based ragas. Thus the music connoisseur gets a complete feel of the light as well as the classical, especially on the guitar which is a rarity! Raga Chandranandan is a speciality of the Maihar Gharana. Zakirji's versatility with the various Taals such as Deepchandi, Dara and Teental enhances the folk flavor of this album. Panditji's skill over the guitar in the world of classical music is indeed laudable.

World Music Library - Iran - Music of Iran I

Posted By MiOd On 4:10 AM 0 comments
This dazzling recording includes various classical and semiclassical forms, ensemble and solo, vocal and instrumental, in a wide range of dastgahs, recorded in Tokyo in 1989. The iffy English-language notes don't tell one anything about the 12-person group qua group, though the musicians are named and there's a certain amount of general and recording-specific information. ~ John Storm Roberts, Original Music, All Music Guide

This is the first recording to introduce the post revolutionary music of Iran, a style adding the western taste onto practices of Iranian traditional music. An exquisite ensemble performance of traditional instruments and Avaz, a style of vocals.

Japan - Gagaku, Court Music of Japan

Posted By MiOd On 3:06 PM 0 comments
This CD presents the Japanese court music called gagaku. This very particular type of music came to Japan from China and Korea, between the fifth and the ninth centuries. Today, the orchestra is mainly composed of percussions, koto, shinobue (a small bamboo transverse flute), sho (a mouth organ), and hichiriki (a double-reed type of oboe). At the beginning, the first version of the shakuhachi was part of the orchestra, as well as singers. After its introduction, it was adapted to suit the Japanese spirit of the time. Pieces were composed for the ensemble, influenced by the indigenous music of the time. Some ethnomusicologists have been suggesting that this music is performed almost exactly as it was a thousand years ago, making it somehow the longest untouched musical tradition in the world. Since its beginning, gagaku has been performed almost exclusively at the imperial court, and on very rare occasions outside it. This is still pretty much the case today. There still exists only two or three gagaku orchestras in Japan today, the main one being the Emperor one. A fascinating out-of-the-ordinary music! ~ Bruno Deschênes, All Music Guide

Tokyo Gakuso formed in 1978 to preserve and advance gagaku, the oldest of Japan's performing arts, dating back over a thousand years. Since its inception, Tokyo Gakuso has performed many new compositions along with pieces from the classical repertoire that have been rarely heard. Founding music director Tadamaro Ono led the group until his death in 1994, when his nephew, Tadaaki Ono, succeeded him. Celestial Harmonies released an album by Tokyo Gakuso in 2002 -- Gaguku: Gems From Foreign Lands -- which followed an earlier release, Gagaku & Beyond (2000). ~ Jason Birchmeier, All Music Guide

MUSIQUE POPULAIRE & CLASSIQUE DE TURQUIE

Posted By MiOd On 10:12 AM 0 comments
Popular And Classical Turkish Music
MUSIQUE POPULAIRE & CLASSIQUE DE TURQUIE
Ottoman court music has a large and varied system of modes or scales known as makams, and other rules of composition. A number of notation systems were used for transcribing classical music, the most dominant being the Hamparsum notation in use until the gradual introduction of western notation. Turkish classical music is taught in conservatories and social clubs, the most respected of which is Istanbul's Üsküdar Musiki Cemiyeti.

A specific sequence of classical Turkish musical forms become a fasıl, a suite an instrumental prelude (peşrev), an instrumental postlude (saz semaisi), and in between, the main section of vocal compositions which begins with and is punctuated by instrumental improvisations taksim. A full fasıl concert would include four different instrumental forms and three vocal forms, including a light classical song, şarkı. A strictly classical fasıl remains is the same makam throughout, from the introductory taksim and usually ending in a dance tune or oyun havası. However shorter şarkı compositions, precursors to modern day songs, are a part of this tradition, many of them extremely old, dating back to the 14th century; many are newer, with late 19th century songwriter Haci Arif Bey being especially popular.

Brent Gunter - Andalucia

Posted By MiOd On 6:48 AM 0 comments
Brent gunter is talented spanish guitarist which will transform and create a magical journey of andalucia to a vivid picture. This album is filled with some rock, and middle easter percussion and some latin ryhthms which accompany the spanish guitar. Brent plays beautiful melodies and maginificant touch on spanish guitar. The songs bella noche and touch are just creative and full of beat and heart of spanish guitar. This album has taken spanish guitar into new groove, rock generation. Brent's song has mystical touch and essence of spanish guitar which will take u in and never let u go away. Journey of Andalucia is beautiful and magical.I recommend this album to spanish guitar lovers. This album has taken spanish guitar into new generation of popular pop and midle eastern rythms.

When artists are pegged into specific musical categories, too often they are creatively restrained and not allowed to think outside the box. Not so with guitarist/composer Brent Gunter who, on his auspicious debut CD, Andalucia on Sandia Crest, has chosen to straddle many worlds in his world fusion instrumental music, from pop and blues to flamenco and Middle Eastern, laced with jazz and classical grace notes.

"My songs run through a broad spectrum," says the Portland, Ore.

-based Gunter, who produced and recorded Andalucia in his home studio. "Rather than approach a thematic means of putting the music together, I decided to collect a bunch of songs that work together. My philosophy of music is moderation, respect for simplicity and a love for music of the world, including Western pop."

Gunter's world fusion is equal parts world, pop and new age, with tinges of electronica, an array of Middle Eastern rhythms and scales, and an infusion of flamenco. In the liner notes of Andalucia, Gunter writes: "From the beginning of time, [the region of] Andalucia has exemplified the essence of fusion. Situated in southern Spain, people from the far reaches of the globe have settled there to create and contribute to its unique, multicultural place in history. Andalucia transcends its region. It is more a state of being."

Likewise, Andalucia is a crosscultural fusion of music (Gunter calls it "my very own Andalucia") that is both earth and sky-rooted yet transcendent. Centered around his Spanish guitar which lends itself not only to classical and flamenco influences but also the blues, the tunes possess a gentle, rolling quality yet are steeped with a percussive undertow of shakers, congas, djembes, cajons, tabla and dumbek. Keyboard electronica further flavors the mix.

All of Andalucia's 10 pieces are Gunter originals. He opens the CD with the lyrical beauty, "Villa de Amor," then moves into electronica territory with "The Storm Is Near," accentuated by a bluesy bending of the guitar strings and undergirded by an exotic-sounding harmonic minor scale. The reflective "Solitude" is also blues-infused with flamenco colors, while the next tune, "Bella Noche," has a jazzy feel with Celtic tones.

Gunter's guitar takes on an oud-like quality on the mysterious "Secret of the Tower," spiced with Middle Eastern drumming, which is followed by two romantic numbers: the R&B-styled "With My Heart" and the gently gliding "This Dance." After the atmospheric "Touch," the most obvious nod to the new-age genre, Gunter accelerates the tempo on the passionate "Moorish Groove" and concludes with the sacred muse, "Eternity," that floats in an otherworldly calm.

"I used the studio to my creative advantage," says Gunter. "I used it to explore the music, sometimes taking as many as 40 takes to see what direction a tune would go in. For example, on 'The Secret of the Tower,' I improvised many different melodies until I came up with what felt the best."

Gunter's bloodline is a multicultural melange of German, Cherokee, English, French and Irish. He was born in the Pacific Northwest and grew up in a musical family in the desert of north central New Mexico. He got his first Spanish guitar when he was 5 and was inspired to learn by his guitar-playing uncle and cousins. Classical and flamenco were early influences as family members used the styles to create their own fusion that included western swing, country and traditional Mexican songs. Gunter was also fascinated as a listener with symphonic music and soundtracks.

After going through his classic rock phase (Led Zeppelin, Aerosmith, the hard rock of the '80s), Gunter returned to music that was more classical-oriented. He studied classical composition in college and went on to explore the cross-pollination of musical styles. He also became a fan of guitarist Will Ackerman's then-burgeoning early-'80s acoustic music revolution

Radio Tarifa - Rumba Argelina

Posted By MiOd On 1:47 AM 0 comments
The concept of this debut album from Spain's leading roots ensemble is that you are listening to a radio broadcast in Tarifa, Spain's southernmost point, so that you might hear a mixture of sounds from Spain and North Africa. And indeed fuzzy, distant radio sounds introduce one song and close the album. The album features an incredible variety of instruments, including among many others: guitar, tar (Persian lute), buzuki (Greek mandolin), derbouka (North African clay drum), ney (Arabic flute), crumhorn (a loud, buzzing Medieval wind instrument), and the Indian harmonium. The group is not shy about including modern popular instruments like soprano and tenor saxophone, electric organ, and electric bass. The album features almost as many styles as it does instruments, yet they tend to come together as one new style, rather than sounding like a musical salad. The album starts off with the title track, a smooth mix of rumba and flamenco. "Oye, China" is a love lament that plays the layered clip-clop rhythm of the plucked instruments off the more continuous sounds of the accordion and the breathy nsuri (Indian bamboo flute). "Lamma bada" is a straight reading of one of the most oft-played tunes of the Arab world, using Radio Tarifa's favored instruments, retaining the song's modal structure (i.e., all the instruments, even the bass, playing the same line at once). One song later in the album stands out from all the rest. It is an adaptation of a song by a Medieval troubadour named Walter von der Vogelweide originally called "Nu Alrest Lebe Ich Mir Werde," but which Radio Tarifa simply calls "Nu Alrest." Dominated by the crumhorns and the melancholy tenor of Javier Raibal, "Nu Alrest" carries a potent charge of fantasy and sadness, conjuring images of crossing the desert alone on camel. It is imagination like this that makes Rumba Argelina one of the most important world music albums of the 1990s.

Tarun Bhattacharya - Santur: Raga Gujari Todi

Posted By MiOd On 5:22 AM 0 comments
This young master of the santur trained with Shiv Kumar Sharma and Ravi Shankar, and brings a lot of his own flair into his music. In the "Gujari," we hear his innovative bending notes with a special low string on his hammered dulcimer, and in the "Bhairavi" he is lyrical and tonally flexible. ~
Tarun Bhattacharya has been called "a master of one hundred strings." One of the most influential players of the santoor, India's hammered dulcimer-like instrument, Bhattacharya has continued to expand on the instrument's capabilities. In addition to adding an extra string, whose pitch can be varied by finger pressure, Bhattacharya has incorporated meend, an expressive sliding style of ornamentation. Jazz Times described Bhattacharya's playing as "subtle in inflection and supple in phrasing."

The first santoor player featured on the influential all-India radio and TV show Raag Rang, Bhattacharya received his earliest musical instruction from his father, Shri Robi Bhattacharya, who played sitar and santoor. Although he started on the tabla, he switched to the santoor at th age eight. After studying with Dulal Roy, Bhattacharya began studies with Rave Shankar, with whom he studied for 13 years. Although he mostly performs and records as a soloist, Bhattacharya has periodically worked with other influential Indian musicians. Together with fellow students of Shankar, V. M. Bhatt (guitar) and Ronu Majumdar (flute), he recorded an album titled The Song of Nature." Bhattacharya recently recorded a duo album, Mental Bliss, with tabla player Bikom Ghosh, based on the theories of higher evolution developed by Sri Aurobindu. ~

Simon Shaheen - Turath: Masterworks of the Middle East

Posted By MiOd On 12:38 PM 0 comments
"...Simon Shaheen is a virtuoso and master of traditional Arab music...a solid introduction to a centuries-old classical tradition..."
Really outstanding Arabic classical recordings are rare. Shaheen is an outstanding ud-player and violinist who has suddenly drawn some notice after years of quiet excellence. In Turath he is joined by fine nay, qanun and percussion in a recital of classic and contemporary works in the linked Arabic and Ottoman-Turkish tradition. ~ John Storm Roberts, Original Music, All Music Guide

Simon Shaheen is wonderful, and this is a great CD. I've been listening to it since high school (when it was originally released by CMP), and I'm now just short of twenty-nine. My favorite track, and really one of my favorite songs, is the uber-catchy "Longa Farahfaza." The addition of the bass oud really propels the song and gives it some funky oumph (pun intended). The tempos on the other songs tend to be slower, but the track I mentioned and the longer riqq/oud duet on the next track are well worth the price of the album. It's very seldom you'll hear this kind of repertoire with such high production values. If you enjoy this, I also recommend Mr. Shaheen's album devoted to the music of Mohammed Abdel Wohab. It rocks. It really really rocks. Fun-Fact: Dead Can Dance, the leading fake world music purveyors of the 80s and 90s, sample that one for the closing credits of their "Toward the Within" concert film.

Ilaiyaraaja & Hariprasad Chaurasia - Nothing But Wind

Posted By MiOd On 3:18 AM 0 comments
With his virtuousic blowing technique, Hariprasad Chaurasia has turned the Bansuri (bamboo) flute into an instrument of beauty. Blending the musical traditions of India with imagination and innovation, Chaurasia has reached beyond classical music to create a sound of his own. Presented with the national award of the Sangeet Natak Academy in 1984, Chaurasia received the Gaurav Puraskar from the state government of Maharashtra, India in 1990, the Padma Bhushan and the Konarak Samman in 1992 and the Yash Bharati Sanman in 1994. In addition to recording as a soloist, Chaurasia has collaborated with such jazz musicians as John McLaughlin and Jan Garbarek. His compositions have been heard in several Indian films including Silsila, which he co-wrote with Pandit Shiv Kumar Sharma.

Although he began his musical studies as a vocalist, Chaurasia switched to the flute after hearing a performance by Pandit Bholanath a year later. Inspired by what he heard, Chaurasia spent the next eight years studying with Bholanath. He later studied with surbahar player Shrinimati Annapurna Devi, the daughter of Ustad Allaudin Khan and the siter of Ali Akbar Khan. In 1957, Chaurasia began playing and composing material for All India Radio in Calcutta. Ten years later, he collaborated with Shivkumar Sharma and Brijbhushan Kabra on a much-celebrated raga suite, "Call Of The Valley." ~ Craig Harris, All Music Guide

Qalandar Express "Love Songs Of Mystic Riders" (The Badila Ensemble)

Posted By MiOd On 6:30 PM 0 comments
The Badila Ensemble was formed by the french percussionist and keen traveller Bastien Lagatta. The Badila Ensemble, a sufi dancer and five musicians of Eastern and Western origins, brings together Indian and Arab-Persian musical traditions (both folk and art music), taking us to the heart of Eastern poetry and illustrating the close and harmonious relationship that exists between music and spirituality. The six members of Badila belong to different cultural groups and have in common a love of poetry as a vehicle for beauty, wisdom, beliefs...With dance and music, they present an open dialogue, in wich each, aware of his distinctive cultural identity, listens to the secrets worlds of the others. The repertoire, at the confluence of different cultures, includes pieces from an early cultural heritage as well as more recent elements. Mame Khan Manghaniyar (India), Ava Farhang, Javid Yahyazadeh and Sardar Mohamadjani (Iran) are among the most worthy trustrees of their generation of an ancestral poetical and spiritual heritage, of sacred nature, based on oral tradition. Bastien Lagatta and Robin Vassy (France) are percussionists, travellers, inspired by what they call the “melody of humanity”. Bikram Ghosh - Rhythmscape: The New Sound of Melody and Rhythm

Posted By MiOd On 1:54 AM 0 comments
India-born Bikram Ghosh is a master of the tabla. In addition to performing and recording as a soloist, Ghosh has worked with such top-ranked Indian musicians as Ravi Shankar, Aki Akbar Khan, V.M. Bhatt and Tatun Bhattacharya. Ghosh has been surrounded by music throughout his life. His mother, Sanjukta Ghosh, is a classical Indian singer, while, his father, Pandit Shankar Ghosh, was one of the first Indian musicians to perform in the United States, has, and has directed an all-drum orchestra since 1976. At the age of two years old, he used his father's tablas as a childhood toy. Four years later, he formally studied the sarod under Ali Akbar Khan's son, Ustad Dhyanesh Khan. Although he later studied mrdangam under Pandit S. Shekhar, the tabla has remained his instrument of choice. Ghosh, who performed his first concert in Calcutta at the age of ten, spent most of his early years in San Rafael, California. Returning to India to attend middle school, he played congas in school bands. In the Spring of 1997, Ghosh toured the United States with Ravi Shankar. Later that year, he toured with Tatun Bhattacharya. Ghosh holds a msters degree in English Literature. ~ Craig Harris, Rovi

It's very easy to dismiss Rhythmscape: The New Sound of Melody and Rhythm as new age meandering. After all there's plenty of rain sticks and gongs, and you'll find plenty of blathering in the sleeve notes. And don't forget the faux jazz that makes up "Zinc." But if you can take the time to get beyond all the clichés, there's actually some tasty musicianship on this album. Bikram Ghosh is an extremely talented tabla player, albeit one who's working very much outside the box on this release, accommodating Indian ideas, voices, and instruments (along with Western percussion and instruments) to Western mores. All too often that's a bad thing, and brings out the worst from both cultures in the name of fusion. But on pieces like "Gangotri" there's some depth to the thought and the playing. Granted, it's not going to be to everyone's taste. Those who favor Indian classical music will likely see it as heresy, and the new age crowd might find it somewhat busy. So while it falls betwixt and between, there's still plenty of good to be found -- you just have to search for it.

SWARUTSAV - STREAMS IN CONFLUENCE

Posted By MiOd On 6:43 AM 0 comments
Bismillah Khan and Rais Khan
Streams In Confluence
This volume features the great legends Bismillah Khan and Rais Khan as they interfaced for the first time at Swar Utsavs inaugural night. The opening item at the concert was the magical shehnai-sitar duet as the maestros rendered the ever auspicious raga Yaman Kalyan in all its celebratory splendour. The raga opens with the masters rendering the free flowing introduction, the auchaar and then thy move on to two compositions set to teen tala. The volume concludes with a lilting folk tune called the dhun.

Ustad Bismillah Khan Sahib (Urdu: استاد بسم اللہ خان صاحب; Telugu:ఉస్తాద్ బిస్మిల్లా ఖాన్; March 21, 1916 – August 21, 2006) was an Indian shehnai maestro. He was the third classical musician to be awarded the Bharat Ratna (in 2001), the highest civilian honour in India and gained worldwide acclaim for playing the shehnai for more than eight decades

Bismillah Khan was perhaps single handedly responsible for making the shehnai a famous classical instrument. He brought the shehnai to the center stage of Indian music with his concert in the Calcutta All India Music Conference in 1937. He was credited with having almost monopoly over the instrument as he and the shehnai are almost synonyms.
Khan is one of the finest musicians in post-independent Indian Classical music and one of the best examples of Hindu-Muslim unity in India and had played shenai to audience across the world. He was known to be devoted to his art form that he referred to shehnai as his begum, wife in Urdu, after his wife died. On his death, as an honour, his shehnai was also buried along with him. He was known for his vision of spreading peace and love through music.

Tanini Trio - Dokunuşlar (Touches)

Posted By MiOd On 11:47 PM 0 comments

Nassir Shamma - Maqamat Ziryab

Posted By MiOd On 10:40 PM 0 comments
Maqamat Zíryáb
Desde el Eúfrates al Guadalquivir - From Euphrates to the Guadalquivir Naseer Shamma
Naseer Shamma was born in 1963 in Kut, a village on the Tigris River in Iraq. He began studying the ud at the age of 12 in Baghdad, following in the footsteps of Jamil and Munir Bachir. When he was 11, Shamma saw the ud for the first time, in the hands of a stylish music teacher . Although Shamma's father, a shop owner, was religiously conservative, he did not object to his son's artistic ambitions. In 1985, Shamma played his own compositions at his first concert, attended by several renowned Iraqi artists. At the time, he worked closely with "the emir of the ud," the late Iraqi master Munir Bashir. But Shamma wanted to blaze his own path. Master Munir invented the technique of contemplation with oud, but I wanted my music to carry content, an idea or image that is shocking. He received his diploma from the Baghdad Academy of Music in 1987. He began to teach ud after three years at the academy, as well as continuing his own studies. Shamma has composed music for films, plays and television, and has written a unique ud method for one hand - this is designed at for children injured during the Gulf War. Between 1993 and 1998 he taught ud the Higher Institute of Music in Tunisia, and in 1999 he took the post of Director of the Arab Centre for the Ud in Cairo. His compositions are culturally unique. He performs on the oud in a manner which combines ancient methods with his own modern compositions. He has constructed an eight-string ud following the manuscript of the 9th century music theorist al-Farabi. This new design (8 instead of 6 strings) expanded the musical range of the ud and gave it a distinct tonality.

Lute improvisations, variations and compositions on the modes (maqamat) that Zíryáb brought from Baghdad to Cordoba more than one thousand years ago.
