Miklos Rozsa - The Thief Of Bagdad

Miklos Rozsa - The Thief Of Bagdad, The Jungle Book
BAGHDAD, MOWGLI AND MIKLOS ROZSA

There are, of course, many kinds of film music, including the kind that is almost as much a part of the narrative as the dialogue. In the main. film scoring is a subliminal art, intended to be more felt than heard, but there are sometimes movies that require a score to illuminate them in such a way that it would not be amiss even if the orchestra was seen on the sidelines. The Thief of Bagdad and The Jungle Book are films of this kind, and the music Miklos Rozsa provided for them is a vital and delightful factor in their enduring success. Indeed, in the creation of film fantasy and the part played by musical scoring, there are no better examples than these.

The Thief Of Baghdad was put into production in the spring of 1939 in England by Sir Alexander Korda. By that time Rozsa has scored five Korda films, leaving little doubt that he would be given the Baghdad assignment. But doubt soon arrived in the form of director Ludwig Berger, who had just made a film in Paris with the eminent Viennese operetta composer Oscar Straus. Straus, insisted Berger, would write the music for his visualization of these Arabian Nights adventures. Unfortunately the result was music appropriate for Viennese Nights adventures, which sent music director Muir Mathieson running to Korda and making it known that the music was absolutely impossible. Recalls Rozsa, "I was then put in a very strange position. Korda told me to go ahead and write my score but not to tell anyone. He afterwards put me in an office next to Berger's and told me to play my music as loudly as I could on the piano. I did this for three days, until Berger came in and asked what it was I was playing. I told him it was my concept of the score. He said I was wasting my time since he already had a score, but what, by the way, was that last piece I was playing? I said it was an idea for the love theme. And what, he wanted to know, was that spirited little theme I was playing ahead of it? An idea for the song for Sabu. 'I Want To Be A Sailor.' He nodded and left. The next day he sent Straus a telegram saying that the distance between London and Paris made the collaboration impossible and that he would have to hire someone close at hand. He begged to be forgiven but I'm sure Straus never did."

The Thief Of Baghdad was almost three-quarters completed when war broke out in September 1939. All film production in England was put on hold, and in the case of the expensive Korda production investment was suddenly withdrawn. Since he had long had a distribution contract with United Artists in Hollywood, Korda decided to complete the film in California and set up an arrangement for possible future production there. Rozsa was brought to Los Angeles in May of 1940 to write the music for the new segments and to complete his recording of the score. This would also be his first opportunity to conduct one of his film scores: Muir Mathieson had conducted all previous Rozsa scores but he was not included in the move from London. Thereafter, Rozsa would conduct all his music for films.

The suite from this glowing score covers much of the plot of the enchanting film, surely one of the most successful of its kind ever realized on the screen. It begins with the King's fanfares and proceeds with the arrival in the port of Baghdad of the villainous Jaffar (Conrad Veidt), who intends to conquer the city with sorcery. Jaffar imprisons the handsome young heir to the throne, Ahmed (John Justin) but the mischievous little Abu (Sabu) steal the key to the dungeon and together they escape to Basra. There they see a procession and for the first time Ahmed catches sight of the Princess (June Duprez), and instantly falls in love with her Rozsa's love theme makes this abundantly and passionately clear. jaffar also desires the Princess and offers her father, the Sultan, a clockwork horse like Pegasus, which flies above the city with the Sultan on his back. The Sultan agrees to give his daughter but then meets his death when Jaffar presents another toy. the six-armed Silvermaid, which dances for the Sultan and then kills him. The final movement of the suite describes the happiness in the marketplace of Basra, as the people rejoice in the victory of Ahmed and Abu over the wicked Jaffar and the marriage of Ahmed and his lovely Princess. It is all a fairytale par excellence, and made the moreso by this splendid music.

Korda's success with The Thief of Baghdad paved the way for three more films to be made in Hollywood - That Hamilton Woman (more graciously titled Lady Hamilton in England), Lydia, and The Jungle Book, all of them scored by Miklos Rozsa. The latter reunited the composer with Sabu and would result not only in a wonderful music score but a recording in concert form, with Sabu as the narrator and Rozsa conducting the NBC Orchestra in an RCA album, among the first ever made of a film score. Issued in the summer of 1942 the album sold over forty thousand copies, a remarkable sale for a concert work in those years. In 1955 Rozsa again recorded the suite for RCA, this time with Leo Genn as the narrator. Another recording was made in Nurnberg in 1981 with the German narrator Elmar Gunsch, from which the suite minus narration has been drawn for this presentation.

As in the case of The Thief Of Baghdad, Rozsa's music for The Jungle Book goes beyond the normal functions of film scoring. It is not background music, it is accompaniment in which the music is part of the story telling process. Korda allowed for a loving treatment of Rudyard Kipling's story of the Indian boy Mowgli (Sabu), who wanders off into the jungle as a baby and is reared by a wolf pack. Both the beauty and the danger of the jungle are skillfully set by Rozsa's rich descriptivness - Mowgli is characterized by a folksong - like melody and the sadness of the mother who never forgets him is marked by a lullaby. But it is in his musical characterizing of the various animals that Rozsa achieves something quite rare in the annals of composition. The nature of each is captured by instruments that cleverly and charmingly spot them. The lumbering thunder of the elephants is marked by trombones and tubas, horn glissandoes speak for the hunting call of the wolves, cackling contra-bassoons limn the chuckling of Baloo the bear, muted brasses speak for Jaccala the crocodile, Bagheera the black panther slips through the jungle to the sound of shimmering strings, another contrabassoon, this time more dignified, signals the wise old python kaa and the gurgling of an alto saxophone suggests the mocking laugh of hyena. The hissing sound of the brass tells us of the poisonous cobra, the silly chatter of the monkeys comes across with the cheecky high notes of the woodwinds and the low. muted trombones warn us of the treacherous, murderous tiger, Shere Khan. The fight between Shere Khan and Mowgli is described by Rozsa with all its ferocity and all its triumaph, a victory that allows the animals to return to the peace and beauty of their jungle, thanks to the courage of the boy who loves understands them.

Had Miklos Rozsa composed only these two films scores he would merit a place among the listing of important, influential film composers. The Thief Of Baghdad and The Jungle Book are remarkable compositions, yet they represent merely a small part of a catalog that is incredible in its scope. Rozsa has proved himself a master of every form of film-romantic, ancient adventures and modern crime - and all of it in addition to his career as one of this century's most successful composers of concert and chamber compositions. His is a place in music unlike that of anyone else.

“One of the most masterly instrumentalists in the world today”— New York Times
Here, collected for the first time in a 3-CD set, are all of Ravi Shankar’s recordings on Deutsche Grammophon brought together in celebration of his 90th birthday.

For George Harrison he was “the Godfather of Western Music;” for Yehudi Menuhin “his genius and his humanity can only be compared to that of Mozart’s.” No other musician of his time has garnered such glowing and enthusiastic praise.

Sur Sudha - Melodies of Nepal

This is a excellent choice for anyone who likes to listen to different types of music. I highly recommend this cd since it carries all the sentimental value of Nepali music. One of the best CD in Sur Sudha's entire history of music creation, I think. I own it, I love it, I play it very often. Go and just buy one, seriously you will not regret it. It has Sitar, Tabla and flute.

Souad Massi - Raoui

Posted By MiOd On 5:39 AM 0 comments
Souad Massi is that rarest of Algerian performers -- she doesn't sing rai music. But more than that, she's an accomplished singer/songwriter, a kind of North African Tracy Chapman, although she works in the Maghrebi genre of sha'bi as much as she does in folk music or soft rock. Electric guitars and touches of flamenco, oud, and the Arabic bass gimbri all help bring a real distinctiveness to her sound, which certainly has more in common with many American '60s protest singers than her contemporaries in Africa (indeed, to some she's Joan Baez reborn). Coke's production (he has worked with Ben Harper) is very sympathetic, bringing a live feel to the record ("Matebkiche" is, in fact, completely live). "Bladi" is a perfectly catchy song, its oud line deftly leading into Massi's smoky voice, and "Nekreh El Kelb" has a vital urgency. But it does fall apart somewhat in the later tracks, which come across as rather MOR and make her sound a little like Natalie Merchant -- which doesn't place her in the best context. Not a perfect debut, then, but there's plenty of promise for the future, as long as she really remembers her roots and doesn't wander the empty halls of rock. ~ Chris Nickson, All Music Guide

Teofilo Chantre - meStissage

Posted By MiOd On 3:43 PM 0 comments
He was born on the island of São Nicolau. At the age of thirteen, Chantre's family left Cape Verde and migrated to Paris, France. The dislocation from his native land only served to foster Chantre's creativity as he began to compose, during his teenage years, songs inspired by the traditional morna and coladeira of Cape Verde. He was also exposed to international music and, in particular, was deeply influenced by Brazilian music. His reputation as a singer and songwriter began to increase. Cesária Évora, the legendary songstress of morna, recorded three of his songs for Miss Perfumado, the hit album that made her an international star. While Chantre also composes for others, he has meanwhile established himself as a respected performer and recording artist. His albums include Di Alma and Viaja. In concert, he plays his songs with a mostly acoustic line-up of accordion, double bass, guitar or cavaquinho and drums Teófilo Chantre, nascido em 1964, na Ilha de São Nicolau, é um músico e compositor caboverdiano. It’s always a pleasure to hear Teofilo Chantre again. Since his first album, Terra & Cretcheu, released in 1993 by Lusafrica, it was clear that he was one of the most talented Cape Verdean songwriters of his generation. Teofilo’s precise pen is full of images, and he has written many songs for Césaria Evora since the ones which charmed us on her album Miss Perfumado. On this, his fifth album, he has opened up to many new influences. His music is still rooted in languorous coladeiras and bitter-sweet mornas – immersed in the sweet pain of longing that is saudade. But, like other Cape Verdean artists – including Mario Lucio and Mayra Andrade – Teofilo Chantre has this time looked to Brazil. A sensual Cape Verdean bossa feel runs throughout the album, as in ‘Un Monde Hororable’, where he pays homage to Brazil, fado and the French singer Claude Nougaro. Teofilo has lived in France for over 25 years and he now often writes songs in French. He feels an affinity with fellow free spirits, such as Bernard Lavilliers, with whom he duets on ‘Oli’Me Ma Bô’, a song which carries us to a late-night bar in São Vicente, glass of rum in hand. But MeStissage succeeds because it is a varied album, something which it has to be said is not always true of Teofilo’s work. Here, some tracks take unexpected turns. ‘Entre-temps’ reels off an inventory, à la Prévert, of the technological words which have invaded our vocabulary and our (real) lives. In ‘Restau de l’Exil’, Teofilo sings about the anguish of a life far from home. The final words of the song are the perfect ending: “Sleep peacefully nostalgia/everybody is going to dance...” (01). Another CD from the excellent series 'Great Greek Composers'. The second of the two pillars of the greek music, the multi-awarded Manos Hadjidakis, is portrayed with 12 from his early songs. A Mediterranean Odyssey: Athens To Andalucia

Posted By MiOd On 1:24 PM 0 comments
Putumayo's world music compilations of the 1990s were musical roller coasters -- when a theme was chosen, listeners expected the label to be as broad-minded and eclectic as possible. Released in early 1999, A Mediterranean Odyssey: Athens to Andalucia was no exception. The theme of this collection is 1990s music from the Mediterranean countries of southwestern Europe (including Spain, Italy, and Greece), but you won't find any one particular style on the CD. Anything but predictable, A Mediterranean Odyssey ranges from the Greek pop and rembetiko sounds of George Dalaras' "Pame Gi Allou," Glykeria's "Pare Me Apopse Pare Me," and Anemos' "Miazis Me Fotia." to Spanish singer Maria Salgado's haunting ballad "Solo por Miedo," and Sardinian group Càlic's evocative "Un Poeta." On "Saudade," France's Barrio Chino offers an intriguing mixture of Middle Eastern and Latin elements. There are some parallels between the CD's rembetiko offerings and "Bebiendo al Alba" by Madrid oud player Luis Delgado. The very recognizable oud (an Arabic lute) has been a part of traditional Arabic music for centuries, and Delgado is someone whose music celebrates the Moorish influence in Spanish music. A person could nit-pick and wonder why there aren't any artists from Portugal on this compilation -- some Portuguese fado music would have been appropriate -- but instead of nit-picking, it's best to grab a copy of this compilation and savor it.

Dervish Sufi Chants "Video"

Posted By MiOd On 12:02 PM 0 comments
"Today, like every other day, we wake up empty and frightened," noted the great Sufi mystic Jalaluddin Rumi in the 13th century. "Don't open the door to the study and begin reading," he writes. Instead, "Take down a musical instrument. Let the beauty we love be what we do."

Sufism is the mystical and ancient branch of Islam that emphasizes the seeker's path toward ecstatic unity with God. This path is opulently embroidered with many means to "remembering God," or dhikr (also transliterated as zhikr), including chanting the names of God, prayer, meditation, poetry, Qur'anic recitation, praise and music.

While "orthodox" Islam looks down on music, many Sufi traditions seek to utilize its emotive and communal power towards the goal of dhikr. Frequently, a spiritual leader or sheikh (called a pir in certain languages) will lead disciples in these practices in communal rites of remembrance. One central form of group dhikr is called sama'. While sama' literally means "listening," it has the connotation of a spiritual concert of sacred music, often with dance.

Sufi communities or orders are found throughout the Muslim world, from South and Central Asia through Turkey, Iran, the Levant and northern, eastern and western Africa. With that wide a geographical and cultural spread for Sufism itself, Sufi musical practice is itself equally diverse. Each Sufi order or brotherhood has its own traditions, and forms of Sufi practice vary greatly from region to region. It's not surprising, then, to find that Sufi musical forms are wildly distinct and varied; to the newcomer, it might even seem quite startling to discover that, for example, qawwali from Pakistan and India is linked spiritually and historically to, say, the "whirling dervishes" of Turkey or the Wolof-language praise songs from Senegal. However, all these different facets of ritual and performance have the same goal in mind: to lose oneself in remembering God and in drawing closer to the divine.

The Network label from Germany has released some excellent recordings of Sufi music, including the two-CD titles Echoes du Paradis: Sufi Soul and Hommage a Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, both of which include performances by top artists from across the Sufi world. The French label Le Chant du Monde also has an excellent catalog of sumptuously packaged sets of Sufi music with excellent liner notes, including Syrian-focused recordings like The Whirling Dervishes of Damascus: Sufi Liturgy of the Great Ummayad Mosque, featuring Sheikh Hamza Shakkur and the Ensemble Al Kindi, and Aleppian Sufi Transe, with Sheikh Habboush and the Ensemble Al Kindi.

Another wonderful Chant du Monde release with many fine Sufi performances is their double-disc set of recordings made live in Morocco in 2001 at the Fez Festival of World Sacred Music. For a more "modern" take on Sufi dhikr, try Ocean of Remembrance: Sufi Improvisations & Zhikrs (Interworld), led by Turkish clinical psychologist and music therapist Orüj Güvenç, a member of the Mevlevi Sufi order. —Anastasia Tsioulcas

Australia: Sound of the Earth

Steve Roach & David Hudson & Sarah Hopkins
Australia. Sound of the Earth, 1990
Just as the mythology of the Australian people and their continent was personified through the complex Aboriginal creation stories called The Dreamtime, the land also gave rise to a rich musical culture unlike any other. Australia: Sounds of the Earth captures the primordial hums and rhythms that have emerged from and moved across this continent in the four directions, like the winds themselves since The Dreamtime began. This recording features the didgeridoo, an Aboriginal wind instrument of remarkable flexibility and power, in traditional and innovative formats. Virtuoso solos by Aboriginal artist, David Hudson, are complemented by performances of up to four didgeridoo players accompanied by drums and electronics.
Tracing the development of an indigenous music firmly rooted in patterns of existence dictated by the rhythms of the land, Australia: Sounds of the Earth embraces Australia's musical past and present. The riveting performance of cellist Sarah Hopkins, acknowledges the debt 20th century composers owe to the influence of Aboriginal music. By utilizing a combination of bowing techniques and overtone singing, the Australian cellist emulates sounds of the didgeridoo. Producer, Steve Roach, blends the recordings from the outback with their haunting modern echoes by creating evocative soundscapes, and the illusion of a journey through time and space to the origins of these primal sounds.

Sanja Ilic & Balkanika - Balkan 2000

Posted By MiOd On 4:46 PM 0 comments
Traditional Balkan folklore music themes interpreted with a contemporary slant.

'Music performed by Balkanika is inspired by the folklore of the Balkans. Old music tunes from Balkan with splendid musicians playing traditional instruments, modernly orchestrated, performing music which conjures the atmosphere of the Balkans region, in a new attire for the new millennium....

Balkan 2000 is a piece composed as a modern expression inspired by the sacral and profane music of the Balkans, or more precisely with Byzantine Commonwealth, with an accent on Serbia and regions inhabited by Serbs, through the folklore, harmonies and musical instruments of our region including the flute, kaval, clarinet, ud, shaz, gusle, goch, bagpipes and djumbus combined with the piano and the author Sanja Ilic as soloist.

... The music is inspired by the sacral heritage of the Balkans, by the optimism and frivolity of the folklore. Although treated as a modern project, the author tried to produce the atmosphere of times far behind us and that each number creates for the listener the atmosphere and images of events. The harmony of the musicianship gave the composer the idea to name this group of musicians Balkanika and, fronted with his own instrument - the piano, lead the band to play

Drobinska - GUiE DE CIRNAT

Posted By MiOd On 4:09 AM 0 comments
DROBINSKA, the acoustic project named for its leader Oleg Drobinsky, is a unique example of Balkan music, with all its melodic strength, complex rhythms, and emotional expressiveness.
DROBINSKA is Drobinsky's first individual project after his many experiences with other world music bands. This is a unique alloy of Bulgarian, Macedonian, Serbian and Romanian melodies that he gathered while traveling in Hungary, Romania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and picked up in the Conservatory of Chisinau (in Kishinev, Moldova).

In the Conservatory, he also met Martin Nyaga, who was instrumental in launching the DROBINSKA project. Oleg had in his hands many melodies from a great variety of people, and many aficionados of Eastern European culture would say that they do not belong together. But what 'world music' means here is a way for a group of artists to develop this variety of melodies into the concentrated spirit of living tradition, in order to convey a newly discovered world of emotions that unite body and spirit, and the cultural message of the often misunderstood region.

Putumayo Presents: Brazilian Cafe

Posted By MiOd On 12:40 AM 0 comments
Brazilian Café brings together a captivating selection of samba, bossa nova and jazz by Brazilian stars and up-and-coming talents. In the early 1960s, legendary Brazilian composers Antônio Carlos Jobim and Vinicius de Moraes hung out in an Ipanema beachside café where they would often see a beautiful neighborhood girl, Helô Pinheiro, walk by. She became the inspiration for one of the most popular songs of all time, "Girl From Ipanema." The global bossa nova boom can be traced to that moment of musical inspiration at a Brazilian café and most of the artists on this CD drew inspiration from Jobim, de Moraes and other songwriters who followed. Brazilian Café includes songs by legendary singer and songwriter Djavan and jazz star Rosa Passos. The album also features songs by talented artists such as Paris-based songwriter Márcio Faraco, samba revivalist Teresa Cristina, electro-bossa hipster Katia B and eclectic vocalist Ceumar, all of whom have had songs on other Putumayo collections. As with all Putumayo CDs, this collection features songs that have not been released outside of the country of origin by exciting young talents such as Italy-based Toco, Salvador natives Alexandre Leão and Carlinhos Cor Das Aguas, bossa singer Marcia Salomon, and Rio's Arranco de Varsóvia and Ana Costa, who are among the hottest new voices in samba today.

Raja'uni 'ayanayk (Inta 'umri)

Composer: Muhammad 'Abd al-Wahhab

Lyrics: Ahmad Shafiq Kamil

Maqaam: Kurd

Genre: Ughniyah

Ragaa'ouni a'einaik el Ayam illi rahou.
Your eyes took me back to my days that are gone.
A'alamouni andam a'ala El-Madhi wi gerahou.
They taught me to regret the past and its wounds.

Illi shouftouh kabli ma tshoufak a'inaih.
Whatever I saw before my eyes saw you was a wasted life.
omry dhayea' yehsibouh izay a'alaya?
How could they consider that part of my life?

Inta omry illi ibtada b'nourak sabahouh.
With your light, the dawn of my life started.
Ad eyh min omry kablak ray w a'ada?
How much of my life before you was lost?
Ya habibi ad eyh min omry raah.
It is a wasted past, my love.

Wala shaf elkalb kablak farhah wahdah.
My heart never knew happiness before you.
Wala dak fi eldounya ghair taa'm el-jiraah.
My heart never knew anything in life other than the taste of pain and suffering.

Ibtadait bilwakti bas ahib omry.
I started only now to love my life.
Ibtadait bilwakti akhaf la ilomry yijri.
And started to worry that my life would run away from me.

Kouli farha eshtakha min kablak khayali.
Every happiness I was longing for before you.
Eltakaha fi nour a'ainaik kalbi w fikri.
My dreams they found it in the light of your eyes.
Ya hayat kalbi ya aghla min hayati.
Oh my heart's life - You are more precious than my life.
Leih ma kabilni hawak ya habibi badri?
Why I didn't meet your love a long time ago?

Illi shouftouh kabli ma tshoufak a'inaih
Whatever I saw before my eyes saw you was a wasted life..
omry dhayea' yehsibouh izay a'alaya?
How could they consider that part of my life?

Inta omry illi ibtada b'nourak sabahouh.
You are my life that starts its dawn with your light.

Ellayali el hilwa wil shouk wil mahabah.
The beautiful nights and the yearning and the great love.
min zaman w elkalbi shayilhoum a'ashanak.
From a long time ago the heart is holding for you.

Douk maa'ayah elhoub douk habah bhabah min hanan kalbi illi taalshoukouh li hananak.
Taste the love with me bit by bit from the kindness of my heart that is longing for the kindness of your heart.
Hat a'inaik tisrah fi dounyethoum a'ineyyah.
Bring your eyes close so that my eyes can get lost in the life of your eyes.
Bring your hands so that my hands will rest in the touch of your hands.

Yahabibi taa'ala w kfaya ill fatna.
My love, come, and enough.
Howa illi fatna ya habibi elrouh shwayah.
What we missed is not little, oh love of my soul.

You are my life that starts its dawn with your light.

Ya aghla min ayyami.
You are more precious than my days.
Ya ahla min ahlami.
You are more beautiful than my dreams.
Khoudni li hananak khoudni.
Take me to your sweetness.
Mina el woujoud w iba'idni.
Take me away from the universe.
Bia'eid bia'eid ana w inta.
Far away, far away, me and you.
Bia'eid bia'eid wahdeina.
Far away, far away, alone.

A' elhoub tisha ayamna.
With love, our days will awaken.
A' el shouk tnaam layaleina.
We spend the nights longing for each other.

Salaht beek ayami.
I reconciled with days because of you.
Samaht beek el zaman.
I forgave the time because of you.
Nasitni beek aalami.
With you I forgot my pains.
W inseet maa'aak elshagan.
And I forgot with you my misery.

You are my life that starts its dawn with your light.
