Acoustic France

Posted By MiOd On Thursday, July 15, 2010 0 comments
Putumayo found itself with a hit when it released an album of French café music, so the next logical step is of course to add an entry to their acoustic line with a French entry. French café music itself is heavy with acoustic formats, chanson and gypsy jazz high in its formats. Here those are thoroughly represented, along with some more modern elements in the singer/songwriter vein. The album opens with a fairly Brazilian piece courtesy of Les Escrocs, fitting sociopolitical outrage into a relaxed acoustic format surprisingly well. Thomas Dutronc stutters out a nice bit of gypsy jazz, keeping accompaniment on guitar himself. Actress Sandrine Kiberlain contributes a piece of striking pop, and New Brunswick native Pascal Lejeune creates a bit of classic French café culture that could just as easily have come from Brassens or Gainsbourg. J.P. Nataf invokes elements of the Beatles in a more folk-infused ballad, Parisian (by way of Le Cote d'Ivoire and Maryland) Constance Amiot provides what may be the highlight of the album in a heartfelt but fairly complex piece of contemporary singer/songwriter goodness, and the short-lived group Gordon Sanchez contributes a worthwhile piece. Carla Bruni adds in a breathy, seductive, chanson ballad pre-Sarkozy (and indeed dedicated to a previous lover) that could almost have come from a Francophone Jewel in its vocal delivery. The delivery of Rose is fairly forgettable amongst the rest of the album, especially given the impassioned delivery of Gérard Pitiot in what would seem to be a slightly modernized chanson. After another romp in the realm of gypsy jazz courtesy of Romane, this time with a heavier Spanish influence, the album ends on the decidedly multicultural Rupa & the April Fishes and a milonga in French that doesn't quite fit anywhere in the more restrained French music with its Argentinean pathos, but does end the album on a strong note. The French language lends itself well to acoustic music, and the selection of artists present on this compilation capitalizes on that marriage of aesthetics perfectly. An excellent primer in both contemporary French music and in more historic stylings, by way of their modern interpreters and standard bearers. ~ Adam Greenberg, All Music Guide

Euro Lounge

Posted By MiOd On Saturday, July 03, 2010 0 comments
Because there is so much lazy, careless, appallingly sloppy A&R in the recording industry, A&R people who do their job well should always be applauded. And when it comes to A&R, Putumayo has been thoughtful and intelligent more often than not. Putumayo's A&R people usually do a lot of hard thinking when they assemble a compilation, which is why world music enthusiasts hold the company in such high regard. A good example of Putumayo's thoughtfulness is Euro Lounge, which takes a look at the more melodic world/electronica experimentation that has been coming from Europe. Some world/electronica fusion can be forceful, abrasive, dissonant, and hyper, but Euro Lounge doesn't get into any of Europe's rave-friendly techno/world sounds. This compilation focuses primarily on Europe's more melodic, relaxed world/club fare -- in other words, chill-out grooves for club hounds who are into world music. And in the 21st century, that could be anything from downtempo mixed with Brazilian music to trip-hop/Middle Eastern hybrids. Most of the artists on Euro Lounge come from various European countries, including Italy (Daniele Silvestri, Bandabardo, Gabin, S-Tone Inc.), Belgium (Gare du Nord), and Spain (Mastretta). But their influences aren't strictly European. Gabin, for example, brings a Brazilian influence to "Sweet Sadness," while S-Tone Inc. is very Indian-influenced on "Limbe." And some of the artists on Euro Lounge don't actually live in Europe. Ilhan Ersahin, for example, is a part-Turkish, part-Swedish jazz saxophonist who was born in Stockholm but now lives in New York. The John Coltrane-influenced Ersahin has recorded some memorable post-bop albums, but "Girl" isn't jazz -- it's an enjoyably moody blend of downtempo and Turkish pop. Full of surprises, Euro Lounge is yet another appealing example of the sort of hard thinking that usually goes into Putumayo's compilations. ~ Alex Henderson, All Music Guide

Italian Cafe

Posted By MiOd On Thursday, June 24, 2010 0 comments
This is a charming, if ultimately fairly inconsequential, collection of recordings from 1950s and 1960s Italy, along with a handful of songs by a few modern artists whose stylistic roots go back to the postwar era as well. The overall sound may come across as a bit kitschy to American ears -- there are lots of accordions and crooning, emotive vocals -- but if you spend some time with these recordings most of them will grow on you. Highlights include the quirky Vinicio Capossela's "Che Cossè l'Amor," Quadro Nuevo's jazzy instrumental "Tu Vuo' Fa' l'Americano," and Quartetto Cetra's slightly cute but really very engaging "Un Bacio a Mezzanotte." On the slightly less compelling side are Gianmaria Testa's contributions, the willfully goofy "Dentro al Cinema" and the self-consciously intense (and ultimately self-parodying) "La Traiettorie delle Mongolfiere," but the high points outweigh the low ones on this ultimately charming collection. Recommended. ~ Rick Anderson, All Music Guide

Latin Lounge

The downtempo side of fusion between traditional Latin forms and electronica. The mixes are surprisingly good throughout, with styles taken from everywhere from Spain to Argentina to Texas and thrown together with electronic beats and grooves. The album opens up with Alacran, an Italian outfit specializing in electronic tango à la Gotan Project. Son is taken on by Roberto Poveda with only slight modification, but enough to evoke the samba at times. There's proper chillout from Bebe, Cuban-British dub from Sidestepper, and a mix of flamenco and more from Amparanoia. More tango fusion and then a bit of nostalgia from rising star Charange Cakewalk. Perhaps the oddest bit here is an appearance by Deepak Chopra in a full-on bout of Indian-exotica-via-Mexico with aid from Adriana Castelazo. The mix is coherent and holds a constant sway without the schizophrenic breaks that are so common with cross-cultural albums. A charming album that belongs in league with Putumayo's other lounge-focused albums as perfect backing music to any given evening. ~ Adam Greenberg, All Music Guide

Claude Challe Presents New Oriental From The R.E.G Project

Claude Challe Presents New Oriental From The R.E.G Project
A great collection of so-called new Oriental music out of Lebanon mixing traditional Middle Eastern instruments with digital production techniques and the influence of modern lounge music and deep house. Already a huge hit in Lebanon, the UAE and many of the Gulf States, the R.E.G. Project - Ralph, Elie & Guy - came together through Guy Barbar doing a live show in a Beirut restaurant in late 2001 where Ralph Khoury, the resident DJ, heard him and suggested they do some tracks together with Ralph's friend and producer/DJ Guy Manoukian. Their self-titled debut LP topped the charts in Lebanon for over three months, and a hook-up with EMI worldwide and someone in there having some savvy ideas about marketing it to the huge Middle Eastern community of Europe and the US have lead to this. The sound itself is great, swinging from the opening two tracks "Free At Last" and "Lost Love" with their traditional Middle Eastern feel, onto tracks like "Harem", "Peace" and "Casa Del Sol" which mix lounge and deep house stylings (often within the same track) to come up with a unique sound. There's even Latin and samba sounds in there, notably "Zay Al Hawa" which muddy the waters even more. The tracks are cut to run into one another as well, so the overall sensation is quite frenetic and kinetic but relaxing at the same time. It's world music but without the horrid pikey connotations due to its high production standard and Guy and Ralph's dancefloor/chill-out sensibilities. A great find, beautifully packaged with a gorgeous picture of Beirut at sunset, and an enjoyable addition to any music lover's collection (especially if you enjoy the downbeat-meets-world end of things), as well as a fantastic way to turn your lounge into a Lebanese lounge bar at the flick of a switch and the lighting of a hookah. Even gets the almighty thumbs up and push from renown Buddha-Bar compiler and French downbeat guru Claude Challe.

For those with an interest in modern Middle Eastern music, here is an excellent introductory disc to the music that people there (and all over the eastern hemisphere) listen to today. The nature of the singing is traditionally aramaic, but the distinctive chanting styles have a backdrop of electronic instruments using the same phrases and cadences that are played on traditional instruments. The tracks with many of these tracks is that they have a thoroughly western bent. While their nature is 'eastern', the dressing is 'western'. Artists include Alabina, Zehava Ben, Cheb Tarik, Ishtar, Farid, Salim Halali and many others.

The Essential Guide To Meditation

The Essential Guide to Meditition: Authentic Music for Meditation/the Buddhist and Hindu Traditions [Box set]
Anything calling itself The Essential Guide to Meditation leaves itself open to criticism that it's making too grand of a claim for any album to live up to, considering how many schools there are of meditation practices. Nevertheless, this three-CD set does hold considerable value, not only offering three-and-a-half hours of music, but also presenting music from much more traditional sources than most such compilations with this theme do. Each of the CDs follows entirely different sub-themes within the overall meditation concept: the first disc devoted to three Buddhist mantras originating within a Chinese tradition; the second to three pieces from the Indian Hindu tradition; and the third to six pieces from the Balinese Hindu tradition. As an anthology, this is a little problematic, whether it's used for meditation or not, since the musical styles are so different from each other that it's quite possible even open-minded listeners might not find all of the discs to their taste. Still, it does present material that's both considerably different from many new age-aligned recordings marketed as meditative aids, and much truer to the religious sources of much meditative practice than many such albums.

The music on the Buddhist disc is taken from recordings by flute and keyboard player Song-Huei, with accompaniment on two of the tracks by two-string violinist Jin-Long Wen, and it's the least satisfying from a musical point of view, tending toward the preciously pretty, slightly slick side in both arrangement and production. The Indian Hindu disc (entirely sung by Jagjit Singh), in contrast, is the best and most relaxing and entrancing of the three, highlighted by "Shree Krishna Naam Dhun," based around the "Hare Krishna" chant that is perhaps the most famous mantra to the international audience. With what sounds like a softly swelling vibraphone accompaniment (the precise instrumentation is not specified in the liner notes) and subtle drones and percussion, as well as hypnotic interplay between Singh and backup singers, this 37-minute track has a glow that can be enjoyed by both meditators and more general world music listeners. These qualities are also present, though to less striking degrees, on Singh's other two performances, justifying the claim in the liner notes that "so soothing is his voice that, legend has it, Indian psychiatrists have prescribed his records to relieve stress." The Balinese Hindu disc is performed by gamelan orchestras, and while it comprises perhaps the most unadulterated world music on the compilation, its heavily percussive and repetitious feel also make it the least accessible to Western listeners. ~ Richie Unterberger, All Music Guide

Asian Groove

Putumayo Presents: Asian Groove
Somewhere along the line, the term "oriental" became politically incorrect. The term was in no way derogatory -- it simply referred to people from what used to be called the Orient (China, Japan, Vietnam, Korea, and Thailand), just as the term "Scandinavian" is applied to people from Sweden, Norway, Denmark, and Finland. But the language police took a disliking to the word (without justification), and now, the word Asian is generally applied to those who are from what was once known as the Orient. So when one sees the title Asian Groove, it is logical to assume that Putumayo means Asian as in Chinese, Japanese, or Korean, but Putumayo actually means Asian as in Indian and Pakistani. There are plenty of excellent compilations of traditional Indian and Pakistani music, but Asian Groove is totally modern in its outlook -- most of the artists combine Indian or Pakistani elements with modern funk, dance-pop, electronica, or reggae. Technically, the contemporary Indian and Pakistani pop sounds that dominate this rewarding compilation are indeed Asian grooves, but infectious tracks like Bally Sagoo's "Noorie" and A.S. Kang's "Terian Gulabi Buliyan" have more in common with Turkish, Jewish, or Greek pop than they do with the pop sounds that are coming out of Japan, China, or Korea. And that's because Indian and Pakistani music -- like Turkish, Greek, Armenian, Jewish, Syrian, or North African music -- involves what is called modal playing. Those who aren't professional musicians may not know the technical meaning of the word modal, but they'll be able hear the parallels between Asian Groove and collections of Turkish pop or Algerian rai. Karmix's "Sabhyata," in fact, combines Indian and Algerian elements. Asian Groove doesn't have anything to do with Chinese or Japanese pop, but it's a lively, enjoyable survey of contemporary Indian and Pakistani sounds. ~ Alex Henderson, All Music Guide

Moroccan Spirit

Posted By MiOd On Saturday, March 27, 2010 1 comments
The lush Moroccan Spirit emphasizes music's meditative qualities, but this imaginative mix of traditional and modern also works on a less contemplative level. The Brave--the guy behind Sacred Spirit, Indigo Spirit, and B-Tribe--traveled throughout Morocco over a five-year period with a microphone and a tape recorder, capturing the essence of both the Arab and Berber cultures. He then wove these disparate musical threads into a cohesive multicultural musical fabric using unobtrusive electronic beats and studio programming. There's even a bit of electronic groove on some of the more upbeat tracks. "Jim I Nim" and "La Mamounia" crackle with the vitality of traditional Moroccan dance music, but could easily work at hip world-music-friendly nightclubs. Mellow highlights include the somber "Music for 1001 Nights: Outro" and "Moroccan Soul," which is propelled by soulful women singers. The album's not as challenging as the more radical hybrids using North African music, but Moroccan Spirit is far more than mere background noise. --Tad Hendrickson
